Great tutorial. Object selection has become so accurate that selections like the iceberg look 2D and somewhat artificially placed in the image. Is there a way using a depth map or feathering of the selection to blend the object into the rest of the image? Thanks again to you and TK for such great tools.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 ай бұрын
Good question Tom. Try this: 1.Save the ice as a selection 2.Stamp the layers and create a smart object (like I did in the video) 3. Launch the Camera RAW Filter and make the detail adjustments and return the image to Photoshop 4. Click on the My Channels Button on the Multi-Mask Panel and choose (Ice). 5.Output as a Black Mask, Painting with a White Brush through a selection. (Black Square, White Brush Button) 6. Use a soft edged brush at various sizes and opacities to locally apply the detail adjustment. With this technique you will be able to bring out the detail in the ice better suit your needs. The soft edged brush will allow you to get good blending. You'll be painting through a selection so you will only be applying the detail to the ice.

Dave, great edit. I watch for your video every Friday and now I have begun to download the image and try my own edits before watching your video. Then I compare my edits to yours. Great way to learn!

Dave, you are "the" magician of editing. This video solved one issue that I thought was unsolvable. I use ACR quite often when editing in Photoshop. Rather than use the masking in ACR, I have often wished you could do the masking in Photoshop. It just never occurred to me to make the mask prior to launching ACR. Brilliant!!!! Why, oh why can't I think of these things on my own. Well, it is a humdinger for sure. 😁

When I first saw this image I thought to myself, what can Dave do to really make this image shine, WOW! Brilliant! Love this edit and love the Color Transfer tip using the Color Grading Tool - appreciate how you are bringing in the use of the other TK9 tools in the last few tutorials to compliment the edit process. Thanks Dave!

Happiness is TK Friday. I just returned from Sedona Arizona. The techniques you demonstrated will be very helpful in making my images pop. Thanks Dave!!! Let me know if you want an image from Sedona for a future TK Friday full edit. The red rocks are absolutely breathtaking.

Thanks again Dave for a great start to the weekend. Iv'e been seeing a few photo KZbin vids on Icebergs as I guess the season for it. It's amazing to see these giant monster icebergs on their travels and slowly getting smaller. This one is at the end of its journey and a shadow of its former self. With Dave's edits you've made it spectacular again.

great tutorial..I do alot of Dodging and Burning. But, I could not isolate the lighter areas enough using the lights, so I isolated using the darks, but then used dodging to lighten them a scooch. Was this OK to do?

Very nice edit Dave. In my view you clearly show practical examples of why and how to effectively use Blend If.

Another great edit, Dave. I have recently started using your workflow to edit my images, and have noticed an improvement in many of my previously edited images. The hardest part for me is while using the color grading tool, to know where to drag the amounts for shadows, midtowns and highlights. I haven't developed the eye for that as, yet. Keep up the great work!

Love your edits! When you finish an edit and are ready to save it back to Lightroom, what final step should we take in our Layers Panel to close it out…Flatten or what?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly10 күн бұрын
Thanks, Jonathan! If you have enough storage, I recommend saving the image with the layers intact. Just in case you need to make some tweaks to your final result later on. I used to always flatten my images in the past, but I now regret it.

Dave, I always have trouble seeing the vertical line/diamond adjustment with the gradient tool when closing off images. What do i need to adjust in my settings in Photoshop to be able to visualize this. thanks, Ray

Ray if you are using a Windows machine you might want to give this a try (this info came from Chat GPT so I can't verify its accuracy): Increase the UI Scaling: Go to Edit > Preferences > Interface. Under UI Scaling, select 100% or 200% depending on your screen resolution. This will make the interface elements, including the gradient line, larger and more visible. (I think you'll need to restart Photoshop to see the change) (This only applies to Windows and not Mac)

@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Thanks Dave, but I use a Mac. Any ideas ?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 ай бұрын
@@rays2857 Here is the info Chat GPT gives for Mac machines: On a Mac, Photoshop doesn’t have a separate UI scaling option like it does on Windows. Instead, it relies on macOS’s display settings. Here’s what you can do: Adjust macOS Display Settings: Go to System Preferences > Displays. Under Display, choose Scaled and select a resolution that makes the UI elements larger. Increase Font Size and Scale UI to Font: In Photoshop, go to Photoshop > Preferences > Interface. Increase the UI Font Size to Large and check the Scale UI to Font option. Restart Photoshop to apply the changes. These steps should help make the UI elements, including the gradient line, more prominent. If you still have trouble, you might want to consider using a lower resolution on your display to make everything appear larger.

I couldn’t watch it immediately because I was traveling but when I was back I was presented with another masterpiece TK Friday! I like how the blues and blacks came out and the contrast is out of this world. BTW, I was searching for a TK Friday tutorial specially designed for Printing - is it in the making? 😊

Dave, I'm using Windows. I've followed your tutorial to stamp a smart object layer and then add a mask of a selection before opening ACR. In my platform, ACR adjusts the whole image, not just the mask. Any ideas for solving what i might be doing wrong?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 ай бұрын
When in the Camera Filter the entire image will get the detail. When you bring the image back into Photoshop the mask should effectively apply the detail to the masked area.
