The very important word here is "CONTINGENCY." Just as T.K. stated, at certain points in the contract, once you reach those milestones, you "bump it up." It's a travesty if Michael Jordan is still only being paid from a 1982 contract. That contract should have been re-negotiated at least 3 to 5 times over this 40 years period. Michael Jordan should have a 10 billion dollar net-worth instead of 2 to 3 billion.
