I would suggest posting every 200' or so. (1) If a sign falls, is obscured, or "mysteriously disappears", you've still got the every 500' rule covered, and (2) it gives a we're serious, "F--- around and find out" vibe. Also, depending on the terrain and what's growing on it you could easily walk between signs 500' apart and genuinely not see either of them -- especially if you border public land where the clueless could be out wandering around (your neighbor should be just as aware of your shared border as you are).

In MA there's no requirement re. distance between NT signs, only one "conspicuous" sign on your property is enforceable as long as it includes the property owners name and address. There's also no height or property-corner requirement in MA but I post about 15' high to help prevent tear-offs and post enough NT signs to make the property line obvious. The yellow tyvek NT signs, that come in a roll, stuck on self-stick vinyl floor tile work well installed with coarse thread truss-head screws, which can be backed out as the tree grows. In MA, the property owner, or property manager, can serve an "Order of Trespass" against anyone who doesn't live on the property, and file it with the local PD, so that person is officially warned that if they trespass they'll be arrested. Surprisingly, the Manatee County FL Sheriff's Dept told me that they don't have any "Order of Trespass" type warning system, you have to first witness someone trespassing on your property, call the SD, then the SD has to catch them on your property in order to give the trespasser an official warning that they'll be arrested if they're caught trespassing again.

Great informational video Andrew. I am so glad that you put this video out. I live in Fort Myers, Florida and 30 years ago somebody trespassing got hurt on my mother's property and try to sue us. But because we were agriculture and we had horses. The piece of property they got hurt on was fenced inside of a fence. The lawsuit was dropped by the judge. After that my mom made us put No Trespassing signs everywhere.

We were told in our county and state we have to post it at both driveways because there is a ordinance that if not posted someone can walk on your property and your giving them permission to entry any time they want in the future. Indiana has a purple paint law. The purple paint law, which went into effect on July 1, 2018, is a way landowners can keep people off their property with just a little purple paint. The “Purple Paint” law says that “a property owner may “deny entry” to property by placing purple marks on trees or posts around the property. “ Cheaper than signs that can be torn or fall down.

In FL, if you shoot a deer on your own property (or public/state property etc) and it runs onto your neighbor's/the neighboring property etc. before it drops dead..you must get the owner's permission to retreive the deer before actually going onto their property, and getting it. If you dont, you can literally get charged with Poaching.

It's a different story in western states where there is lots of public property. If your property is undeveloped or not fenced it isn't reasonable to expect people to know where public land ends and private land begins. Some people will post "No Trespassing" signs on public property and try to run people off. There was one large tract of BLM land that is great for hiking, fishing, hunting and off road vehicles. A rock quarry had a mining lease from BLM on part of this land and would run people off despite the fact that the lease stipulated they were prohibited from blocking public access and recreational use. At one point the quarry sub-leased to a private hunting club. The local sheriff would threaten to arrest people for trespassing and BLM didn't want to deal with the conflict. It finally got settled in court. The private hunting club was run out and BLM actually marked some ATV and hiking trails to the river, and cleared some parking areas.
@TKCL
@TKCL Жыл бұрын
I can definitely see it being more complicated in that vast open land out west. Here public is posted as well as private. Public land uses different signs and colors to make an easy designation between the two.

I put up signs in English, Spanish, and painted a “purple band” on all wooden fence posts. Does not matter-it makes the criminals more curious. Since the new administration; an invasion has become the standard in South Texas. Since 2020, over 2.5 million have crossed our border in Texas alone. P. S. Do like l do, anyone caught on my ranch, I impound their vehicles, personal weapons and call the sheriff. And after court and usually 2 grand later the trespassers can claim their property. Pays for the security cameras, lighting, and food for my four-legged security team.

Good video, I was under the impression that we were a "No Fence Law State" here in Florida, meaning you are not required to post or fence, and if someone trespasses they would be held accountable regardless the size of the property. That said I have to admit I unknowingly trespassed while hunting unfamiliar land that I had permission, once I realized I was off the land I was allowed to hunt, I unloaded my firearm (not sure that would help), in case I did come across someone I wanted to be able to say "hey I am sorry, just got lost, gun is unloaded. Point me back in the right direction and I will leave quickly" Luckily I found my way back with out incident (this was before GPS) All that said, I just ordered some no trespassing signs.

Back in the day people use to hunt any land that was not marked so its very normal for people to hunt on land that's not posted. It's not illegal you can take legal recourse but Noone is truly trespassing unless you have a sign or asked them to leave. Def homeowners fault if they don't have signs in nc you have to paint purple lines on trees. For one I do not hunt on other people's properties but would not be mad if someone trespassed on my land but it's not posted

Water does not stop at the shore line but at the high water mark. Most ponds it is about the same. Rivers which have flooded it can be well inside your property. You then have to tell them they are trespassing. Putting up signs like you did is prudent. Canoeists often will camp on the space between the waterline and the high water mark because that is considered waters of the state. Also carry a gun with you if you feel the need never point it or wave it around as you would be committing a felony to stop a misdemeanor. If it is hunters call the game warden first. Call the LEO is you consider them a potential threat in any way. Illinois just made trespassing a ticketing only offense. Don't understand how that would work. Cop writes a ticket and the person doesn't leave do they write another ticket? The news must have left something out.
