Absolutely love this lens! I completely feel what you’re saying about the something very special about it. Over a full day of shooting I use a few different lenses and the 50mm 1.2 immediately stands out in Lightroom. The 15-35mm is a close second because of the landscape versatility, but the 50mm holds the crown for everyday shooting 😍

I'm torn between the 50 and 85 but stumbling upon your channel with all the 50 1.2 content has pretty much supported me decision to go for it. I've used the 85 for a few events but the 50 focal length just provides the flexibility of capturing more of the environment but still giving the option to take beautiful portraits. For what I would use the lens for, the focal length would just make sense for more of what I shoot. The 85 is just not that convenient and usable for what I need, although a beautiful lens. The 50 is a good middle ground. I did purchase the RF 50 1.8, which I feel every canon mirrorless photographer should have in their arsenal, small but mighty. From that experience I'm loving the 50 focal range.

Man, I love my rf 50 1.2. I got it partly bc of your review. I'm going on a trip soon, and I'm tempted to bring this lens and only this lens for the whole trip. I always swap lenses to try and justify why I bought the other lenses, but I always love the images from this lens the most.

This lens is a monster! Detailed, sharp, convenient. Bulky? Yes, but when you see pictures it’s forgotten. I bought it secondhand for $2500 and never regretted. Expensive? Yes. But best 50mm lens I had ever have. No matter the camera system I use. Highly recommend

Keep in mind that the displayed dxo score of RF glass is measured with an Eos R body while EF glass is measured with an 5dsr, which has a higher megapixel count and thus has a higher sharpness rating. Try comparing an EF lens tested on a 5d m4 to an RF lens and notice that the RF glass actually mostly has a higher score.

I personally think that this is the best prime lens ever made. It is my workhorse. I shoot 75% or more of my shots with it. It is just truly fantastic. Editing seems easy and that is because I don't have to make much adjustments because the pictures just look great. It renders so well. This is my favourite lens.

I enjoy feeding off other photogs passion for certain lenses, even if I don’t gel with them. 50mm is my favourite focal length, but the 1.2 doesn’t work for me, I found myself using and enjoying f2 more, so didn’t keep the 50 and moved on to 35. My favourite 50 is the Leica SL 50 Summicron but the L Mount system isn’t as interesting as the Canon or Sony at the moment. R5/6, A7 iv are 3 cameras that I think hit the perfect price to performance spot.

Thanks for your thoughts :) That’s totally fair enough to me. Although part of lens quality is more objective, our personal preferences are definitely totally subjective in the end!! I haven’t tried the Leica so can’t compare there. Agree on that final point though!

I would recommend this lens to pros and amateurs alike honestly. If you are a hobbyist prosumer then this lens is perfect. There isn't anything else for Canon I have tried that does such sharp images at F1.2 or anywhere near there. You get what you pay for...

I got this lens recently. I’m glad that I got it. Image quality is so goood! The downsides that I find is it’s pretty heavy. Walking around streets with this exhausts my wrists. Also you may feel a bit anxious that you might damage by bumping it into something cuz such expensive. But I would think 85 mm is more suitable for street photography cuz you don’t have to get that close to the subjects. I find that 50mm isn’t narrow enough sometimes.

I've always NEEDED a 50mm prime with any system I own. Recently getting into the R system and managed to take advantage of Canon's trade in program going on right now and get this lens for $400 off plus my trade in value at the shop I bought it. I think it ended up being $1,500 or so. Excited to get out and use it.

great video! at first I was wondering did MItch get a hair cut and coloured his hair, then I realized I'm at TKNORTH's channel, opps. I agree with all your points, i went with the RF 85/1.2 without renting it. I recommend renting and trying it out, the RF85 is more my range but the size is very uncomfortable. I should have went with the viltrox 85mm/1.8 for the size and image quality. For my family and street photos, nooone will notice the difference between f1.2 and f1.8 at web sizes. I was struggling between 50 and 85, knowing 50mm range is better for everyday use but 85mm the compression makes any everyday object stand out . For now, as a causual shooter as you've mentioned, I'll stick with the 50/18 RF simply because of size and easiness to carry around. keep up the great videos!

I use the RF 24-70 f/2.8 for group photos (6-10 people). At f/4 everyone in the photo is decently sharp and in focus. I have been wandering if the RF 50 f/1.2 can make more people in line decently sharp stopped down at f/2 or at least f/2.8.

Hi TK! I have a EF50 1.2 that I use with my R6 + adapter and it also seems amazingly sharp. The new RF might focus quicker...what's you take on that?

Hey there! Sounds like a great combo! I haven’t actually tested it out it properly, I’ve only read it’s not quite as sharp wide open around 1.2, but otherwise I think it reviews really well! Focus may be slightly better on the rf but again I’m not sure without giving it a good test :)

I don’t shoot much fashion but I reckon most people would prefer the 24-70 range! Bit more versatile and probably don’t need the wider aperture as much, keeping the entire garment in focus
