@@kayemni Totally untrue ! Go to Eastern Somaliland the largest province Sool region you can't carry Somaliland flag even ! A big war took place which Somaliland government lost and now the province declared independence from Somaliland and wants to join Somalia. The same is happening in the Awdal region in the far west of Somaliland. They hide those facts from you . Elections never took place in these conflict regions recently. That little middle part of Somaliland capital can't form a country, and even that part is divided . Regional countries you talk about are all backed by the west as proxy ! As you can see the big proof now with Trump showing who is behind them . I guarantee this will cause a big civil war and humanitarian crisis . Let Somaliland as it was... Regardless of whether or not Somaliland "deserves" independence, the simple fact of the matter is that Somaliland has been its own country for decades and that Somalia is in no position to re-exert control over it (or anywhere for that matter). Recognizing Somaliland acknowledges the reality of the situation and provides a somewhat stable diplomatic partner in the region.

It would he appreciated if you could link evidence for 'massacres' in Las Anod. Regardless, considering the delicate history of Sonaliland with the Hargeisa Holocaust, it is understandable that the Isaaq majority may wish to maintain self-rule. Yeah, there are risks of inspiring other less well thought out and stable regions to do the same thing, but I don't see why that should be used to deny Somaliland statehood. Its just a challenge that has to be worked though. My biggest concern is that if the UK, US, EU, UAE ect are only interested in recognising Somaliland as a strategic position, to set up military bases ect, that that is a bad idea on the Wests part. Heavy American presence isnt always in the best interest of the regions. That being said, Somaliland wholeheartedly deserve their independence. They just have to be careful to not sign away too much autonomy in an effort to gain recognition.

They massacred many loyalists in Las Anod who opposed secession and yet they claim their "nation" is democratic? 😂 It's absurd to still hold eternal grudges against southern Somalis over Siad Barre’s actions especially when his regime harmed many south Somalis in the country. Somalis need to unite and move beyond qabyalaad (tribalism) which only divides and weakens us. Unity is the key to a stronger and a peaceful Somaliya.

One year before the independence of Somaliland, the British government took a population census for the last time I believe it was Feb-July 1959, and the result was 825,651. While the Somali population in Somalia (Mogadishu) in 1955 was estimated at 1,300,032, including 175,000 Italians. Personally I think Somaliland getting recognized is a great thing. I constantly hear how Africa is in a bad state because of the remanants of colonialism, drawing general borders without any consideration about the ethnic makeup of those areas. The recognition of Somaliland would be a step in the direction of fixing those arbitrary borders. If it succeeds (which is likely considering they've been basically autonomous for years now) it shows that this is the way to fix these problems. If it fails it at least dispels the mith that borders where the real issue why Africa is stuck in the past. Also let's remember that Egypt is now trying to use Somaliland as a kudgel to beat Ethyopia with in the discussion of water rights. Removing it from the equation will force Egypt to stop treating the Nile as if it was it's personal property despite them holding only a small part of its tail end.

In other words, this isn't a case of changing colonial borders at all and TLDR should've done a better job clarifying this point. 2) Egypt is trying to use SOMALIA, not Somaliland, as a kudggel against Ethiopia. However, after years of occupation marked by persecution and genocide, Somaliland reclaimed its sovereignty on May 18, 1991 based on its original boundaries at the time of independence.

The people of the republic of Somaliland regained their freedom not independence in 1991 as Somaliland is a de jure country that gained its independence on June 26 1960 as the first East African country to do so. The government of the republic of Somalia and Mogadiscio control over Somaliland was never “de jure” or legal. The union was never ratified, the constitution was rigged by the Italians who not only were the ones that wrote it but certified the referendum of 1961. The coup of 1969 only solidified the reality that Somaliland was under occupation There was always feeling of disenchantment that would lead to the 1961 attempt by the Somaliland camel corps, the occasional riots and the demand for freedom was consistent.

what about all the other former British colonies? Or at least those whose population wasn't near completely exterminated?

"Stable democracy". They are neither a democracy nor stable. They have been kidnapping and politically silencing dissidents that don't toe the party lines of the majority Isaaq clan. They have also been committing massacres against regions that refuse to be part of their secession in an ONGOING war.

There is no Somaliland that can be recognized now. Large parts of the so called Somaliland actually fought a bitter war last year just to not go with that idea.

@Remake5182 Awdal has the same issue like SSC. The only ones who want to secede are those who belong to the Isaq clan, and even many of them who still want to remain united with the rest of Somalia don't have the freedom to express their opinions or they risk imprisonment.

The majority of people in the Awdal region support unity, and that is a fact. 2 years ago, before SSC decided to act, Somaliland was claiming that SSC was Somaliland and people wanted to secede! It is only a matter of time until Awdal erupts, too, and forces Somaliland forces to leave Awdal.

It's disappointing that the video on Somaliland failed to address the broader internal dynamics within Somaliland, specifically Las Anod. Las Anod is a city in the Sool region of the Horn of Africa, geographically located between Somaliland and Puntland. While the video does a decent job of explaining Somaliland's claim to independence, it completely overlooks the critical internal tribal and political factors that shape the region, particularly the situation in Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn (SSC) regions. Las Anod, the capital of the Sool region, has been a flashpoint due to its contested status between Somaliland and Somalia. Historically and culturally, many of the tribes in this region, such as the Dhulbahante, have had strong ties to Somalia rather than Somaliland. This is a major reason why there has been consistent resistance to Somaliland's claims over Las Anod. The video also omits the fact that the Dhulbahante, along with other non-Isaaq clans, often feel marginalized within Somaliland's political framework, which is largely dominated by the Isaaq tribe. While the Isaaq tribe forms the backbone of the pro-Somaliland movement, the narrative becomes more complicated when looking at non-Isaaq clans. For example: 1) Many Dhulbahante and Warsangeli tribes are staunchly pro-Somalia, opposing Somaliland's independence claims. These tribes see Somaliland's administration as an attempt to impose dominance over areas that historically aligned with Somalia. 2) The ongoing clashes in Las Anod are not just about independence but also about self-determination and governance. Local leaders and communities have repeatedly expressed their desire for autonomy or alignment with Somalia rather than being ruled from Hargeisa. 3) The Somaliland government’s heavy-handed military response to protests in Las Anod earlier this year has only deepened resentment. Videos and reports from the region show civilians bearing the brunt of the violence, further alienating local communities. The lack of engagement with these realities paints an incomplete picture of Somaliland. The SSC regions are not simply "disputed territories" but areas with a complex socio-political history that challenges Somaliland's claims. By ignoring this, the video inadvertently perpetuates a one-sided narrative that fails to acknowledge the grievances of the Dhulbahante and other tribes in the SSC regions. If TLDR truly wants to provide an accurate and balanced perspective, it must address the voices of those in Las Anod and other contested areas who oppose Somaliland’s claims. It should explore how clan-based politics and historical affiliations play a significant role in this debate, rather than simplifying it into a pro-Somaliland independence viewpoint. In future videos, I hope TLDR delves deeper into the internal tribal dynamics within Somaliland and the SSC regions to provide a more nuanced understanding of the situation. Las Anod is not merely a battleground for sovereignty but a symbol of the broader struggle for representation, autonomy, and self-determination within the Horn of Africa. Ignoring these aspects does a disservice to viewers seeking a comprehensive understanding of the issue.

Well-written & well-polished analysis, but you fail to understand, USA & Britain understand the tribalism going to make Somaliland ugly in the eyes of international players. Wllo, Those clans are part of Somaliland & they're well represented in Somaliland politics & parliament. Take your Somalia propaganda elsewhere. This Country will not be hostage for tranalistic people like you from Zomalia. 😅
