I'm not exactly sure where to put this on the map in terms of "how Europe works", but there are also various other international cooperation councils and bodies. For instance, the Saami Council (representatives of indigenous people's in selected Nordic Countries and Russia). There are also issue-specific regional collaboration commissions, such as HELCOM and OSPAR which focus on marine governance and environmental protection. I don't quite see how those are exactly different than for instance the ECB or the GUAM groups, but they are also places where international (regional) meetings are held which support international collaboration and joint policy making. But great job with this!

​@@pinchermartyn3959 I am always confused by this argument. Do you not remember the EU parliamentary election that gives every citizen of the EU a direct vote last year? It's not that long ago. And I'm pretty sure the Brexit lot had themselves elected just to try and skim off as many diets as they could possibly get right before the end and generally trying to mess with any EU legislation to score political points about how necessary it is to leave the EU. Don't get me wrong, the EU has its flaws, but to say the EU is undemocratic in comparison to the UK is ridiculous. The UK doesn't even have a goddamn constituition, England suppresses the voting rights of the other member states whenever it suits them and you have nobles composing one half of your government. I'm not saying the house of lords is necessarily a bad thing, direct democracy has its own flaws as is clearly visible with something like Brexit passing (arguably not really in a direct democracy way though), but to accuse the EU of having an unworkable Union system as a Brit...

PLEASE DO make a whole series about these relationships! I'm an American and didn't know most of these agreements/ etc existed at all. So without enough background knowledge, I could barely follow everything I was being told. I'd love to learn more, and your videos are fantastic at being informative but concise, and typically give me a springboard if I want to do further research. This video, being an overview of a lot, did the concise thing well, but sacrificed the context of these things that personally I NEED to be able to store things in memory. I remember things by their connection to other things, so yeah. I'd really appreciate a whole series on this!

There is not much context though. They just started cooperating for economic reasons and to prevent another world war. This is a reason a lot Europeans are eurosceptic. Because not much ties us together except "western values" and economy. An easy way to remember these agreements is to make a tier list and you'll notice it's just like an exclusive club where you get more privileges the more economically strong you are and the more you contribute.

@@erickgomez7775 It's because of the Cold War. It takes a little bit of time to sort things out and reconnect after that incident. The cultural and economic ties between Baltic and Nordic have grown constantly stronger ever since it ended though so it may only be a matter of time. There are two other organisations that should have been mentioned here btw, the Baltic Assembly consistsing, as the name says, of all three Baltic states and NB8 (Nordic-Baltic Eight) consisting of - well, you guessed it. Looking beyond that, there are regular formal meetngs between NB8 and Visegrad (did they mention Visegrad in the video? That's Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia). Oh, and then there's Northern Future Forum (NB8+UK). It's a more informal forum but may become significant in the future since it's one of the few ties between UK and the rest of Europe not affected y Brexit.

Ireland opting out of Schengen was due to the UK wanting to opt out. Since the vast majority of European travel from Ireland was either to Northern Ireland or the mainland UK it was more valuable to maintain the common travel area.

Yeah. Combine the Schengen zones absolute demand for stricit schengen outer border checks to enabled dismantling internal checks with Common Travel Area demanding no checks between UK and ROI. End result is either both ROI and UK are in or out schengen. Just one being in with the other out would mean violating either Schegnen treaty or Common Travel Area treaty. It is legally not possible. So pretty much the Common Travel Area would have to join Schengen, not ROI or UK. So if either ROI or UK don't for whatever reason want to join.... well so can't the other. if EU TRIED (which they never will, because opt-out) to demand ROI joining Schengen as part of EU membership, they would have to answer "that is legally impossible, it would violate our international treaty obligations."

The result would have been a country of almost 30 mill people, with advanced economies, enormous natural resources, and a well-educated population. But very different international alignments do form major obstacles. Nato, EU, and so on. And Sweden would be the major power. Norway, Finland and Denmark tend to regard too many of those posh Stockholm Swedes as somewhat arrogant and self-serving :-)

A funny little thing about Estonia: Back when Estonia used to be part of the Soviet Union, people there quite often spoke Finnish, at least this is what I heard. As I visited there last year, I couldn't use Finnish anywhere. But luckily most of young Estonians they have learned English, so I had no problem there. I just had to pretend I'm travelling abroad.

It's not like we spoke Finnish in our day-to-day conversations. Not commonly anyway. It's that Finnish TV signals reached Northern Estonia which is the most populous area in Estonia. Being free and uncensored plus having lots of exciting foreign shows and films, Finnish TV channels became very popular over here. That is despite the efforts made by the Soviet administration in restricting people's access to those channels. As a result a lot of Estonians learned Finnish by watching Finnish TV. This also contributed to us holding Finland as a model for a future free Estonia. Today we have our own free media and access to almost the whole world's media as well, so the popularity of Finnish TV and the Finnish language has dropped among Estonians. But many still like to watch it and Finnish language courses are still among the most popular language courses in Estonia.

I'd love to see a proper deep dive on all of this. One concern I have with simply having an episode for each grouping is, that it might be difficult to represent the complex interactions between two or more groups which shape European politics on so many matters. I'd love to see some content dedicated to that.

8:00 They're actually sort of close to the centre of Europe. The east west centre is around Vilnius. Which means that in east western respect these countries are actually in close to the centre. That said they're slightly of to the south.
