Such sophisticated storytelling! The contrast between the crystal clear pool of childhood innocence to this murky one, contaminated by all the "dead leaves" of sex, class, money, power, guilt, betrayal and shame is such a simple but glorious metaphor. Tenoch's half-hearted attempt to clean the leaves out of the pool before letting Julio win is just 👌 These two idiots were totally ambushed by adulthood and betrayed the life right out of a friendship that could've lasted a lifetime in every way possible. Good analysis. To add on, I also see the contrast between the pools as a parallel to their relationships with society. When they swim in the clear pool, they’re immature boys, ignorant of the world around them and lost in their own little naive bubble. It’s them against the world, life is simple. But now, though he doesn’t know it, the sight of Tenoch with Luisa is stirring feelings inside Julio that will inevitably be scowled upon by society. Now their relationship is no longer simple. Besides the dark secrets, the leaves also represent all the looming pressures of society that are about to come for them now that they’re becoming men. And their true feelings are not allowed a place in such a society. So their relationship turns bitter as Julio confesses to get revenge for … something, he doesn’t know what. It’s just as he said earlier: “truth is unattainable.”
