Trev, you need to be looking at the front foot of your player to get the timing of you swings. You should be able to see in you peripherals, as soon as he stomps that foot, swing! that will be you biggest upgrade.

usually u hold down the stick to go to the next base if u let go right after they round the base it wont make ur player keep going then slide or dive also yes hold l1 down to that could also be it
