Is Thomas familiar with the recent Ulrich Volker biography? It’s been a couple years since I read it, but iirc he definitively dispels the rumors of H. having Jewish kin (though no major biographer ever took that seriously anyway). Toland is still the most comprehensive to me. Alternatively, could you ask him if he’s read H. and the Power of Aesthetics by Spotts? Basically takes the idea that understanding how he viewed himself as an artist before anything else, is imperative to understanding the man.

I'm FAMILIAR w/the VOLKEE book, tho I haven't READ it. The ISSUE w/AH's familial heritage has LONG been known. The ''dirty secret'' of the family was that ''black sheep'' ALOIS (who was ADOPTED owing to yet another mouth to feed burdening young ALOIS' already POOR family - this was a COMMON old world practice) married his NIECE Klara Polzl - after having moved then adolescent Klara into the marital home to care for his wife when she was dying of cancer. So IOW, AH's parents (Alois and Klara) were UNCLE and NIECE (although NOT by blood) - And Alois (who was a notorious BRUTE and bully) had essentially exploited a teenaged girl to get what he wanted from her, while not even having the decency to wait until his wife was in the grave before consummating his selfish desires.
