This isnt gonna be noticed by anyone but idc, i gotta say something. Donnie's full quote in this scene is; "Actually, we're freshwater turtles. I suspect we're derived from the diamondback terrapin, but it's possible we're common box-" before being interrupted, but obviously he was going to say common box turtle. Now, if we're going off physical descriptions, there's no way the 2012 turtles are diamondback terrapins. Note they have white skin with black spots, which the boys CLEARLY don't have. You can't argue that Mikey has freckles either, because they're nowhere near resembling a diamondback terrapin's patterns. So that leave red eared sliders and box turtles. Red eared sliders have, well, red streaks on their ears. Not to mention again, white and black patterns (though this time stripes) So they clearly aren't sliders either. Which leaves the common box turtle as the last option: Now, a common box turtle has an orange-and-black spotted pattern on the skin and striped on the shell (clearly unlike our turtles), but the Eastern box turtle, however, shares a strong resemblance. It even has spots on its face that can in fact be perceived as freckles like Mikey has. Therefore, I conclude that the 2012 boys are in fact Eastern Box turtles. (also just in case you don’t know ALL turtles, unless deformed, are able to fit in their shells they just can’t completely seal shut unless they’re box turtles or musk turtles) If you can’t tell I am AuDHD and my special interest is turtles.

Them being another slider subspecies would be really cool! Most people know red-eared sliders (T. scripta elegans), but don't realize that there are three subspecies. Personally I've kinda dubbed them as Eastern River Cooters for a while now, placing them under the suborder Cryptodira (turtles that can retracts their necks far back into their shells). But their species is so vague that it can pretty much be whatever, and I love that lol

i think tmnt 2012 are a mix of turtles, like the dont have a species. Donnie makes a comment in one ep where he theories theyre a combonation of sorts. with the shell thing i think thats just what most people think every turtle can do, and the showrunners dont mind inconsistency. it happens in 2018 too, the layer games, Raph is the only one to not go in his shell then. Great job btw!

For box turtles - they're called turtles that can "fully enclose themselves in their shell" because their shell is on the the few species of turtles that has a hinge on the front and can protect their heads. Other turtle species can go inside their shell, but it's not fully covered! Sliders do it decently often, softshells really can only pull in their head and tuck their arms (their main form of defense is not their shell - it's their speed and defensiveness). Snappers also can technically go in their shell but its uncommon to see because their main form of defense is, y'know, their hard ass bite. I've never seen TMNT 2012 so I don't know the canon species but because you can see the arms, lack of hinges on the shell & the fact that their carapace & plastron are connected via the axillary ridge, it's probably some sort of water turtle

Box turtle are the only ones able to actually *close* their shells entirely to seal them off with them inside. While mikey does go in his shell you can still see his body parts as with any other turtles. And theres no way he could close his shell off with that much body mass in the way and despite how rubbery they are in their show weve never seen their shells close so it's unlikely they're box turtles. Its more possible that the 2k12 gang are diamond back terrapins as the textures for the turtles do include spots on all of them if you look closely at their skin. Mikey is the only one with prominent freckles per design choice though. Which if his other brothers went in the sun more like he they would probably also form them as getting freckles is a pretty dominant trait i observe in ny family. If one parent can freckle the children will to, and theyre all genetically related. If you cant tan you sunburn and freckle. Donnie shuts off in his room in the dark, Leo trains in a room away from sun, and Raph only goes out in darker areas like alleys so it's obvious they wouldn't freckle as much as Mikey does. He is the one we see in the light the most as hes often bait or just topside more.

Funfact with alligator snappers, theyre so big they cant go in at ALL. And so they mostly sit at the bottom of rivers with their mouths open to get food. They do this because of the fact that they sit so long they gain entire ecosystems on their backs theyre very well hidden in their environment. As they're camouflaged they open their mouth and wait for fish because their tounges look like worms lmao
