I had the 1987 turtles as a kid, so I was pretty excited about these. But now, seeing the pinned joints, lack of ankle pivots, and Don and Leo’s heads swapped, I think I’ll just stick with Turtles of Grayskull.

Things I give exactly 0 f's about: 1. Swapped heads 2. Bumpy skin I think these are GREAT and hope they continue the line.

Good review!! I don’t mind the skin texture that much, smoother would have been better but not a deal breaker for me. As for the Leo/Donnie head swap. I personally glad they did cause like you Leo is my #1 favorite turtle, but I always hated the expression on the vintage figure. So far I’ve only grabbed Leo and Im happy with him. Not perfect, but I wasn’t expecting perfect 👍

I've been mentioning this here and there regarding the head swap...its based on the card art. Leo's card art has the double grin, Donnie has the single. There is also the possibility, and I've felt this way since I was a kid, that vintage Donnie and Leo's heads were swapped. The 5th Anniversary Leo from 1992 has the Donnie head. The Storage Shell Leo also has the double grin. And again, the card art. I have nothing to back that up, but it just felt like the double grin was always intended for Leo, it suits him more too. I read somewhere forever ago that Donnie and Mikey's heads were swapped on the vintage figures (apparently one has a D and the other an M on the inside of the soft heads? Don't have my vintage around so can't confirm)...and you can see that in the card art if that is true (their grins are on opposite sides). For me personally, like I mentioned above, I've always felt the double grin suited Leo more and the half suits Donnie. I might be in the minority, but I'm happy with the head swaps. It finally looks/ feels right to me, and it matches their personalities more for my own collection, but I completely understand why people wanted accurate recreations of the original figures. I know with MOTU Origins as soon as the vintage He-Man and Skeletor heads were released, they became my default shelf versions,. The nostalgia hit hard.

@@ced214I didn’t even notice the ankles until I picked them up yesterday! Disappointing but I’ll just leave them in the box for display or customize them and add ankle joints

I noticed the head swap on Leo and Donnie, I think they were trying to match the box art. Cause on the box art Leo shows both sides of the mouth and Donnie shows one

I like the head swap. Seems to fit them better to me. But I get being annoyed that it is different than the OGs.

Excellent review - they need to retool these a bit, reduce the texture and fix the heads sculpts which are clear mistake.

I love the skin texture, and I always wanted the expressions of Leo and Donnie swapped. I couldn't believe it. Leo is so much better!

Thank you so much for this review. Pretty glad I didn’t preorder this due to bad articulation. Like you said, hoping they’ll update the articulation to make them more like how Mattel did with retro style MOTU figures. Anyway, I like the accessories and the dios, they’re pretty nice.

the main thing i dont like about these are that when you articulate the legs, it starts to scrape the leg and leaves white splays on the legs close to where the hinges are

I'm so down for these. Something about the Turtles in this vintage toy colour scheme does it for me. Wish NECA would put out a version of their toon Turtles with these colours.

Nice review! I agree with your criticisms and also I think Leo and Don’s noses are too big. I’d prefer white wraps on the weapons too. Man I really wish they didn’t texture them! Ugh

Man...Either go all the way or just stay home Playmates!!! How do they STILL suck so bad? The halfway done articulation, messed up head swap, and the skin texture lock it in for me...PASS. I appreciate your honest look at these...I really wanted to love these. Ankle pivot would have gone a LOOOOONG way here.
