In a single nucleotide, we have nitrogenous base, pentose sugar and phosphate group. There is numbering in nitrogenous base too... just 1,2,3 and so on...Again in the same molecule which has pentose sugar part also, we cannot give same numbers.. so to avoid confusion pentose sugar numbers are given a dash...hope u understand....
