Floor sang this song in her first show after her cancer surgery and she broke down with emotion on the ending chorus. It is a very emotional song for her to sing. Yes, this was written to celebrate the European eclipse of the sun in 1999. Loved it again my friend.

This is the first song of Nightwish I remember hearing. It was on a radio in the late 90's, (probably more than once!) and through the years of knowing about the band I always combined the lyrics of "wish for this night-time.." to Nightwish, and for a few decades it was about the only song I knew for sure was of Nightwish. The song has a very beautiful melody and easy, catchy lyrics in the chorus, even for a Finnish teen.

This masterpiece was composed (by record company request) for the total solar eclipse in Europe in 11 August 1999. I believe the number 222 days of light comes from the fact that there were 222 days from the beginning of the year 1999 until the eclipse. Floor is magical (also) here. I think it was said somewhere that this song is one of Floor's favourites. This could explain also the fact that in the (one of the) first concert(s) after her breast cancer surgery, Floor burst into tears at the end of this song.

The significance of the 222 days of light is that during the remaining days of the year we basically don’t see the sun up here in the north. But during those 222 days the basically never sets. The maxi single with Sleeping sun was also released to coincide with a total solar eclipse that was best seen in Finland back in -99.

This song is a treat from Tarja era .... Sleeping Sun was launched on 11th of August 1999, the same day with the solar eclipse which occurred in part of Europe and Asia that year. Now if you take the exact verses which contain "222" you have: 222 days of light will be desired by the night. coincidence or not, there are exactly 222 days starting 1st of January till August 10th inclusive. - valid for non-leap years. 222 days of light refers to the time of jan1 to Aug 10 when there was an eclipse in 1999 that was seen by finland the best. The official music video has an eclipse in it.

Yes, this is about the August 1999 eclipse in Europe. I remember it like it was yesterday. So bizarre. Pitch dark in the middle of day. I was in the city and shared this moment with complete strangers being in total awe! Magical.

I've seen this song live twice, the last month. Both times very different, Antwerp was from beginning till end very emotional. For the audience and also for Floor and the band and then there was Amsterdam. Amsterdam was technically very very good. Can't wait for the DVD to be released of that show. I love this song, also when Tarja sang it. Both dead boys poem and sleeping sun are my 2 favorite slower songs from nightwish.

Yes, this is a great ballad that Floor loves: "It's a very special song for me, so I had to be careful that my emotions didn't get the best of me. Otherwise it becomes too challenging to sing it" As you saw in the Ziggo show a few days ago... [Edit: thorgrim corrects me below - the first concert was Antwerp IIRC] As a Floor favourite it is still on the setlist today, though written for the 1999 eclipse (2nd Aug 1999, 222 days into the year) and released on Oceanborn, in December 1998. Played 313 times on tour it is very popular, for good reason. Some prefer the Tarja version and indeed it is good. Floor takes it to a new level though.

Yes, this is a beautiful song the performance is so beautiful, warm and intense, I agree that Floor is singing from her heart, she feels it, like all the band members together. I have been to their concert last weekend, at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam , the 27th of november and this song was was also played!! This is Floors favourite song. It is really beautiful and she feels the emotions deeply. Recently broke into tears after it. I think after the ordeal with her cancer and being back on tour singing it overwhelmed her. I always laugh at reactors that at first comment about the long songs and very soon they are saying, " No, it can't be over yet, it needs to be longer." LoL.

The eclipse in 1999 was on the 11th August. From the first of January there are 222 days until this date. 222 days of light and then - on day 223 - the sun goes to sleep for a few moments. Edit: saw some guys had written this before... :D This concert was at the Masters Of Rock 2016 in the Czech Republic. Damned good performance!

Heiaa, that song hit me immediately about 20 years ago and since then I am in the Nightwish-Army, listening thousands and thousands of hours to them and I'm still loving it. Gives me goosebumps and a warm feeling. This will be the song which will be played at my funeral one day, my children know that this is my wish ...😇 Went to 3 live-concerts, the last time on december 10th last year in Bamberg/Germany. Was so excited for Dead Boy's Poem, that one gets me every time....You are doing great with the feel and intentions of the songs so don't worry 🙂. And yes this was written specifically for an eclipse, agree wish was longer, but was for the event if I remember correctly so I believe they gave him a specific time frame for it. Could be wrong on the time frame part....sure someone will let me know. Floor literally feels every thing she sings and her tone causes me chills everytime as well (the army knows the term for that 🤭😀). And PS...the album Imaginarium (which many of the songs you've referred to was done as a movie (Imaginarium) which you should watch especially after your comments on Dead Boy's Poem, it's a good peek into Tuomas's mind for that album.

Good call on the eclipse take...it is about the 1999 eclipse...Tuomas was asked to write a song for it, and he at first refused, saying that is NOT how he writes songs, on demand...he eventually relented and wrote this masterpiece. The 222 days of light reference is because the eclipse happened on the 223rd day of the year (August 11th).

Beautiful song, I remember going back over 20years now when that album came out, and they did a live VHS/DVD with all the behind the scenes stuff, mostly Tuomas and Wilska (from Finntroll) drinking vodka and talking about saunas! It’s a very dark album Oceanborn, and was the album that really got me into Nightwish as a band, their evolution to this point has been a ride! But with Floor on vocals they’re the best version of themselves they’ve ever been. I believe Sleeping Sun was a very big hit in Germany when released as a single. Definitely when I’ve seen them play it at Wacken Open Air it gets a big reception.

Pure speculation, but NW is a Finnish band, and Finland is far enough to have months with no sun, and periods when the sun never sets (Midnight Sun).
