Shawncee clearly hasnt heard or met the legendary Mr Worldwide aka Pitbull aka the best rapper of all time. Guy singlehandedly pioneered rap for the mainstream with his unique style and doesn't even get a foot note. How they totally ignored Jack Harlow's physical appearance is beyond me. That's a big part why he has such a large female fan base. He's young, tall, a little bit dorky which makes him look innocent, but on the contrary, has a slick flirty personality. With his smooth flow, flirty lyrics and right marketing. I think el-p lands in the more producer side of what Shaun's saying, because a producer doesn't have to have a brand. They can just make beats their entire career so it's not going to create any cross cultural conflict. While I agree el-p is a great rapper, even when he's with Killer Mike and other black artists he offers so much to the production side of things that he's clearly not seeing the performance in the same way as an Eminem or a Jack Harlow would. Its production first and performance second for el-p not the other way around. He doesn't even think about how he should be marketing himself, it's just pure creativity on the back of his own production. I see the same thing in the Alchemist - he's creating beats based on his creative vision and giving those beats to the artists he thinks would work best on them for whatever creative reason

I don't mind white rappers. But I hate non-black rappers that play up rapping for "irony." Lil Dicky had this problem. Not that he was making comedy, but he was playing up this "haha I'm so different because ironically I am white and nerdy and am good with my money." Rich Bryan, early in his career, did the same thing but "haha I'm ironically rapping because I'm an Asian that wears a polo, pressed shorts and a fanny pack while rapping over drill beats." Macklemore's Thrift Shop did the same thing. That's corny. Comedy rap is fine. Weird Al's "white and nerdy" is comedy rap. But treating rap as a genre as a satire is something that non-black rappers love to do and it low key feeds into narratives of people who think rap is dumb and something that should be a mockery. That's where all the "I hate rap, but I listen to Lil Dicky" "I hate rap but I listen to Macklemore" "I hate rap but I listen to [non-black rapper who treats rap like a mockery]" shit comes from
@willenhall12345
@willenhall12345 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, it's called a subgenre. Not every rap song has to be super serious and hardcore with its themes, people can just have some fun if they want to. I'm sure if these comedy rappers wanted to make a serious song they probably could. They're not treating rap as satire, also there's plenty of black rappers that do the exact same thing.

Unfortunately people are going to miss the point and, ironically, focus on the race aspect on not on what is actually being said. Shawn Cee is not saying that white people can’t rap or that black rappers can’t be mid. What he is saying is that the bar is so low for white rappers compared to black rappers, that just being “white person that raps” is enough to put you over the edge. It’s like being a unicorn. This is basically what happened with Iggy Azalea: a white girl Australian who put on a black drawl and “rapped” got major push from the industry precisely because she was white.

Why is he arguing that mainstream white rappers don’t bring anything to the table when that’s also the case for like 90% of mainstream rappers regardless of race. I don’t see how a couple white rappers releasing mediocre music “brings down the standard” when there’s literally 10x more black rappers also releasing mediocre music within the mainstream. They all bring the standard down, but white rappers make up such a small demographic of rap that placing all of the blame on them feels illogical. Like yeah jack Harlow isn’t the greatest but neither are the majority of the people in the mainstream, the bar isn’t that high to begin with. And then even beyond the mainstream he just ignores all of the white rappers that are genuinely unique and that have influenced the genre

I understand the sentiment but Shawn doesn't really make much of a case here. His argument applies to all rappers, not just white rappers. If you want to be successful and stand out then you need to make something new and fresh and from the heart. There are tons of stupid and regurgitated projects coming out from black, white, latino, and all different ethnicities of rappers. This more just comes off as Shawn having a racial hangup and trying to rationalize it with something that should apply to everyone. Jack Harlow is definitely overhyped but that's also what happens when your demographic is mainly young white females on TikTok. Lots of other rappers are overhyped in the same way that aren't white.
@serfboundspirit
@serfboundspirit 2 жыл бұрын
I think the issue is that you can’t make those distinctions with an art form like hip hop. It started as an outlet for disgruntled black youth. A white person coming into that art form needs to be some form of exceptional to justify his place within it, especially considering the heightened levels of success they garner from doing so. Eminem is an exception bc I do think he started off doing things that many black hip hop artist weren’t. I hate his music now and I only vibe with a select few of his old songs but he was unique. No one in the mainstream rapped about the things he did back then. Fair enough, but Jack Harlow makes music that lots of other black artists make and aren’t as popular *because he’s white and the broader white audience is ready to accept him with open arms.
@tommym7321

@@serfboundspirit I get what you're saying, but it's not Jack Harlows fault that his demographic likes him and the argument forms itself into gatekeeping. I understand why some black rappers might take exception to what Jack Harlow is doing, but what is the course of action after that? Is it to make an example out of Jack Harlow or complain about him? It just looks kind of petty when that happens (similar to the Tyler/DJ Khalid beef). I think acknowledging the history of hip-hop and it's tenets is separate from complaining about Jack Harlow instead of trying to put that effort into making more and better music.

@@serfboundspirit hey bro, NWA and Run DMC used Beasty Boys samples in their music. White rappers have been there since the beginning. Rap isn’t just for black people. It’s always been for white and black people. There’s a lot of white rappers doing new things even today and cornering certain markets by themselves. For Shawn Cee to act like they’re not legit kinda shows how racially motivated his views are. Even a little bit of digging and you can find so many white rappers who have contributed to “the culture” as much if not more than Eminem. I mean this shit is basically Shawn Cee trying to gatekeep rap and hip hop music without any legs to stand on simply because he’s bigoted and ignorant. Shit shouldn’t even be a debate either no cap

He was talking about the HATE Sean got not success. He was clowned on basically his whole career until Detroit 2 despite making meaningful and quality music(outside of some corny bars, especially in his older stuff). Harlow is making pretty mid music in the same lane as Sean with equally corny bars and is loved. He seriously has a bar where he says “Me and my friend just like twins // Same nutsack and the same dick head” and people love him. Also, Sean was never close to as successful as the people you mention just look at the sales, nor was he ever discussed as a top 5 rapper despite some people now(like Akademiks) realizing that Sean is a top tier lyricist.

@@InnanetSlatt nah but the hate Sean got came from people that don't like Jack Harlow either. It's the oldheads in the black community criticizing Sean not the white teenage girls that make up both their fanbases. I think the oldheads don't go at white rappers as much because it's just kind of assumed they're corny. @@InnanetSlatt I don't think it's the "he's white" argument as to why he doesn't recieve as much hate. It plays a factor, but isn't really that big of a reason. He seems self aware of himself and his lyrics. He's not putting on any sort of facade and is just having fun with his music.
@InnanetSlatt
@InnanetSlatt 2 жыл бұрын
@@iman5147 Him being white definitely plays a large role. I was thinking about it yesterday and I think there are 3 main reasons why he's so loved. 1) He's white. He simply couldn't get away with the gay bars, sus jokes, and being associated with gay artists as much if he were black because there's a lot more homophobia in the black community and towards black people in general. 2) He's one of the only well-adjusted celebrities, especially male rappers, in a time where most celebrities seem very out of touch or narcissistic. He also has that "boy-next door" vibe. 2) Demographics. Harlow has a lot of women fans. Besides Ye, Carti, Youngboy, and a few others, a lot of male rappers don't really have crazy fanbases. But it seems like MOST female celebrities have stanbases, even ones that aren't even that famous or good. For example, Nicki, Megan, Billie Eilish, even Selena Gomez. Just think of any female celebrity and her fans probably *love* way more than a male celebrity's fans. I think predominantly female fanbases are more likely to have "stans" who will over praise them or harass people on social media for saying anything bad about them. Since Jack Harlow has a lot of female fans, he kind of gets the "stanbase" effect. For the record, I've been a fan of Jack Harlow for a minute so I'm not a hater. I was just curious why he's one of the most loved celebrities at the moment compared to other likable celebrities making better music.

Lotta interesting points! Melon saying that white rappers being incapable of exploring a lot of deeper topics being what makes them so unimportant is a memorable take to me. To bring up Mac again, that's another reason why his music has such an impact: the topics he explored; addiction and depression; are both well-suited to hip hop and also things that you don't need to be black to have experience with, which is a rare combination.

I agree that there were some sketchy takes however Shawn did say that there were Outliers. People always bring up Mac or Eminem but who else would you fit in there? There's also the completely different topic of white rappers who aren't particularly conscious but I think still have solid musical artistry in their own right, like Aesop Rock and Lil Ugly Mane. Honestly I think this is the best way to go for aspiring white artists in the rap scene; just go ham with your personality and actually try to be unique, something I also think early Eminem did pretty well for his time.

If there were any white rappers that have either contributed to the culture in positive ways or etched out their own lanes it's Em, El-P, Aesop Rock, and Mac are the big four that come to mind. Oh and Prof! But Shawn and Anthony do bring up great points that it's HARD for them to create deep and meaningful songs that connect due to hip hop being about struggling and overcoming in a white man's world. So more often than not white rappers have that against them. But the ones I mentioned rap about their demons and struggles and concepts that are indeed universal and authentic. And I think it's that authenticity that people are so drawn to Jack Harlow. To go back to the Big Sean comparison Big Sean didn't start coming off as real until very recently. He had to grow into that and out of the shadow of Drake and Kendrick. People could feel that. Harlow came in the game with this very chill confident vibe. He seems down to collab with anyone as example with Lil Nas X and extremely flamboyant gay black male artist. I hope Jack continues to find success and can join the ranks of Em and Mac Miller. His appreciation of the culture as a white man is more earnest than from anyone I've seen in a long time.

I don't completely agree with his take, definitely see some of his points though. I think his popularity with white audiences is due to the fact that white audiences find it easier to accept and fandom white rappers for well... Obvious reasons like conscious/unconscious racism but also a little because they can identify with him. think black audiences find him appealing because he's something rare, a white rapper that isn't an Eminem clone, that can actually rap decently, and seems respectful of the culture. It also of course massively helps that he's charismatic and attractive. Also jesus christ the amount fragile whites in the comments Lol

As a white rapper myself, this was interesting to hear. I think you have to be willing to hear black opinions on it if you do what I do. I also think what fantano said about having respect for the genre and where it came from is very important, as well as just having some humility/perspective about it. Otherwise it's like you're coming into a house that someone else built and lives in and being like "aw hell yeah, I bet I could give this a new paint job and charge people admission to come see it!" When I started writing lyrics I was very corny, taking the "oh man I'm WHITE and I'm NERDY bet you never saw that in rap before!!!" route, and now I realize how dumb it was. (At least now) there's tons of white rappers and nerdy rappers (who are not necessarily white btw), so the question is how do I set myself apart? What do I bring to the table that other people haven't? I also wasn't really being myself by emphasizing the nerd thing. And I think that really good rap music comes from a genuine place. But I don't see myself like that anymore, and I'm not sure I did at the time either, so it doesn't do yourself any favors to make yourself a cliche. It's way harder to find the unique/personal/intimate parts of yourself and make art with that than it is to just point out the obvious and pigeonhole your complexities.

No, you don't have to listen to black people's racist opinions. Just do what you do, and have fun. People like this Shawn guy are what we call "haters" who can't accept the fact that white people can also make it big in a predominantly black music genre. But it's not 1990 anymore, there's plenty of black people who have taken up rock, pop etc.. which were all created by whites, yet nobody is throwing a hissy fit. And if they do, they'd be labeled as racists. This guy is just envious of that Jack kid. Nothing else to it, don't bother listening to their BS. Because odds are, they don't like you based on your skin tone regardless of whether or not you try to hear them out.

@@greysonG10 I agree with the 'do what you do' bit, but rock was created by black people just the same as rap. Its a process almost as old as America itself. Black-created music of the era (whatever era that may be) gets popular but not palatable for the typical suburban white kid to listen to, either cause they can't relate to the subject material, familial influences (i.e., "I don't want my kid listening to 'that type' of music), or refusal of the powers that can commercialize it to really market a black artist. Rock is sort of an offspring to what R&B was originally and there were *multiple* black artists out there doing that sound well before Elvis and The Beatles got around to it but they got no attention because of course they didn't, race relations were even more poor than we think they are now and they were open and in-your-face about it. The animosity towards white artists doing predominantly black music isn't because of the artists themselves most times, its because of the labels/companies that do what they always have, which is market the artists that fit most with the 'image' they'd like to push.

I completely agree, I think Shawn's main white rappers he has a problem with are people like Macklemore, MGK, Post Malone, G-eazy, Iggy azalea etc. the thing with those rappers is that they either faded away after 2 or 3 hits or went into a different musical direction, so I don't really get him being offended by them getting more attention when all it amounts to is their 15 minutes of fame and the only impact they have are people who don't even listen to hip hop that much knowing a hit or two from them, they probably don't even support them anyway. The reason Harlow got more attention is kinda the same reason why Lil Nas X got popular, because of memes and humor. On a technical level Harlow is comparable to Big Sean and Tyga but neither of them built a career off being memes, sus humor, not taking themselves to seriously intentionally like how Harlow and Lil Nas X did.

@@user-gm1mt2ie3h theres a few reasons for this though. white people are a minority in rap so there will be less variation. also we're mainly talking about american rappers here. america is pretty segregated, from what i understand most white americans are from suburbs and suburbs are mostly white. so in general, white people are consuming rap from a different perspective. they're listening more as outsiders than someone growing up in the same environment as a lot of rappers. and will have different life experiences as well. i don't like generalising but if i had to i'd say suburban rappers are generally worse, instead of white. ig those are closely correlated though.

Every point Shawn makes could be made about black, Hispanic, Asian or fucking martian rappers. People like to say "oh they all steal styles and rip off others and sound the same" boy... do we not remember all of the SoundCloud era? J Cole, as much as I love him did the same thing, take a style and make it his own. I dont know if I might be missing the point here, but it really seems like he singles out "white" rappers for the same thing 70% of all other rappers do.
