Hey, I'm picking up a used Twice as Sharp today (estate find), and I'm super-pleased with the level of detail in your video. Thank you, and likely to join the guild soon.

Thanks man. Anytime I find a used TAS on the market I snatch it up. Still using an A3 from the 90's. Things a champ. Look forward to the opportunity to work with you in the Guild.

Those look like my favorite snips. I don’t know their brand or I would buy more. In addition to just being nice snips, they are perfect for working on my dog’s occasional mats.

Great value in this one. Did not think of using the honing wheel to build a burr. The cooling tip is also a new one for me. Finally, need to consider the small clamp with my TAS. I can see where it is really useful and would be helpful with fly tying snips.

As I was doing it I was thinking that the diamond wheel on my other TAS would work well too. One of those blades needed more work than I expected. The fly tying niche is a great thought! What a great community to serve.

I learned that I need a bunch of tools and loads of skill before I can properly sharpen my own snips.

Is the checking for temp a step to avoid ruining the heat treatment?

Do you only hone because we are trying not to heat up the metal and or take to much off with the sharpening wheel? Also, when we build a bur while honing wouldn't be cleaner and better for cutting edge to drag out? Why do we cut it off? Makes sense on the cutting wheel to drag off but why not on the honing side also??
@capnmatt414 жыл бұрын
To your first question, yes and yes. To your second question, it's a little hard to understand, but here's an attempt...when we cut the bevel with the grinding wheel it creates a relatively significant and course burr. We push that back onto the bevel side rather than cut it off because it works better with the metal. The hone puts up a smaller burr and we cut one at a time so that we're not left with a burr on the bevel side. Hope that helps!

I think I have plenty to learn with the kitchen knifes yet. Not even thinking of doing any type of scissors. I think there is definitely a market there to tap in to.
@capnmatt414 жыл бұрын
TONS of opportunity in scissors. Not only are there a couple in every house (like kitchen knives) but there are a lot of B2B opportunities as well. We have a running list in the Guild of businesses that use scissors. But, one thing at a time, Tim!

So basically I can’t sharpen my “snips” without all this fancy equipment? How do I sharpen them with basic materials? Is that possible?
@capnmatt413 жыл бұрын
Welp, if you want to do it for hire, I'd say yes, you should get the right gear. If you want to sharpen your own you need to come up with a way to cut the bevels and remove the burr. There are no shortage of ways to do that so it'll depend on what you have at hand. Whatever you do, keep the flat side flat. Rounding over the flat side will quickly pull years off the snips or destroy them.

@@capnmatt41my little snips similar to those were very inexpensive, I got them in a set with a measuring tape at Tuesday Mornings, which I think has gone out of business. At any rate, though inexpensive they are just great. They have no brand/ maker’s mark, so I don’t think I can ever replace them. However I have three, and I just use them only as snips, except one I use for mats on my dog. They are still nice after several years. Thanks for the instruction.

Hi when you said that you use 30 degrees that mean in Usa 30 but in Japan/Europe is about 60 degrees .Importent to know that Anerican mesure is not the same like rest of the world.Only 45 degrees is same every where so for exapmle 0 Usa degrees is 90 degrees in rest of the world

Right on. What tools are you using to sharpen scissors and shears? It would get confusing on the tools we use. Thanks!
