I had a 79 F-600 grain truck with a 361 big block ford truck engine, NP 435 4sp tranny single speed rear end. It was a great work truck for my Landscape business, I wish I still had it.

What you think is the tach is actually a vacuum gauge. Straight up ol' skool system: the more the engine is pulling the more vacuum is indicated. Simple vacuum line going to it probably from some point on the engine intake. Replace the line and the gauge will probably work.Is it needed? Not really but it's fun to watch when working.Back in the day it was a way to get better fuel economy: keep the reading low( by keeping your foot out of the throttle) and less fuel is being used.

Thanks for the ride along Tom. It should ride better with a load in the back. The view of the shifter reminds me of the manual transmission school bus I rode in going to middle school back in 1977.

Sounds good, you can probably start out in 2nd and do ok when empty. Those old trucks are meant to haul and pull heavy and are geared super low to get you going with a heavy load. Awesome truck Tom!
