As difficult as it is to believe, Dr. William Patrick Foster crafted his overhaul of the Marcing 100 based on two basic facts. In the early 1960's, Dr. Foster quickly realized that competing with Frank Greer's Aristocrat of Bands and Dr. Gregg's Human Juke Box was a lost cause. All three bands were the same size and both Tennessee State and Southern were field show precision perfectionists. Furthermore, Tennessee State gained the national competitive edge by being the first College Band to perform on National tv and becoming the first HBCU band to perform at a presidential inaugural parade(President Kennedy's Inauguration). Dr. Foster begin to strategize/develope a plan that would enable his band to "stand alone". Hence begins the use of that phrase. He carried out his strategy by building a huge band. Something that none of the other HBCU'S believed in at the time. Now his huge carnivalist band would "stand alone". Next, comes the most controversial part of his strategy. Dr. Foster crafted the sound of the Marching 100 based on the 1960's Tennessee State Owen's musical arrangements. A full wind sound. Dr. Foster added one twist, he eliminated the use of percussion in his ballads. Make no mistake, Dr. Foster may not have been the chief musical arranger but there was no doubt he was the Editor and Chief Architect. Some would argue that FAMU always had that sound. However, it's clear when reviewing archived video that emphasis on less percussion increased over the span of the 70's and 80's. These improvements served the Marching 100 quite well throughout Dr. Fosters illustrious career. He even made sure from the 70's and moving forward that FAMU's Marching 100 would command the role of being the "first" in many categories to come i.e. Paris Bastille Day, the 20/20 news coverage, and the winner of the Outland Trophy. Well done Dr. William Patrick Foster!
