Since my childhood, the story To Build a Fire by Jack London, has stuck with me. And to that end, I have decided to try build some fires using some different methods and means. To create a control, each time I'll start the process with a 12" 2x4 split apart and a 8.5"x11" sheet of paper.
Today I have a go with the Coghlan's Waterproof Matches. I'll be honest, I really didn't think they would hold up to the water. Color me impressed...

Again, dedication man that's what we all want to see. I'm sure some more intermediate kinda kindling to catch from the paper with enough bulk to get the wood going would've done the job, but as you say, post-rain filming. Makes you realise how mega hard it'd be to start something in winter/in the damp jungle etc in a survival situation.

Man O Man... that feeling when the cold water constricts your lungs and you have to force yourself to relax so you can just breathe. The worst. I can't believe you were even able to function at all. As far as the fire goes. Feather sticks... got to take that knife and make some feather sticks before. The sticks you had were way to thick to use as kindling. Got to start super thin. Make some super fine feather sticks, make a nest out of them with the paper in the middle of the nest. I'll bet that would get the fire started. Also, maybe take 3 of those matches and stick them in the middle of the paper, then light the matches (in the paper) with another match. That would create a lot of initial heat.

Try storm matches. The flammable part on the end is like 10xs as long instead of a tiny little strike head. They burn hotter and longer
