Yesterday I had lunch with my first grade teacher. Why, you may ask? Because she helped me get through my mothers death, therefore she will always hold a place in my life. During lunch, she asked me what I remembered from first grade. I told her I didn’t remember much, but that I’d like to hear what she did. She told me that after my mother died, I was never able to grasp what that meant. Every Monday, She would ask me what I did over the weekend, and I’d tell her that “oh, mommy took me to the park” or “mommy took me out for ice cream” which broke her heart every time. Because, truthfully, I’d been seeing my mothers angel, when no one else could. I’m an atheist, but this really makes me believe that my mother was there to help me cope. My teacher then told me that she’d always assure me that I had people to talk to, and that she was always there to cope, but at that age, (and still now) I’ve never been able to open up about my feelings. So, every Time I got sad, or needed attention or someone to talk to, I’d tell her that my tummy hurt, so she knew that I needed help, or else I’d break down completely. Miss Tracy (that’s what I’ll call her) told me then that she was always trying to keep me busy (therefore avoiding a breakdown) and so she had me read. Since it was such a dark time for me, I clung to things easily. Thus being that book. It was a Barbie book, and I read it so much I could recite each line to you. Miss Tracy asked me again what I remembered from that year, and I said that at the end of the year, she needed to get rid of some books, so she let the kids take some, and I took that one. But she corrected me, saying that that’s what I believed. Those books were not just given to anyone. It was for me. 💖I’m sorry I had to put this in a comment, but I needed someone to say this to.
