Paradoxically, l agree with both you and Lindberg! I regard buzzing the mouthpiece as a tool to be used for very specific purposes.

Wow that's super impressive. The lines you're playing on the mouthpiece and moving your slide.. Like total mastery. Guess I should go back to the shed haha

I totally agree with you on this Anders. It's so easy to recommend mouthpiece buzzing and so many trombonists and advocate it but I'm not sure how many advocate doing it properly - which as you've pointed out, is counter-intuitive and the proper buzz does not have a good tone. Most of the videos on KZbin are favorable for mouthpiece-buzzing it seems but not having watched all of them, I wonder how many point out, like you have, the correct buzz to get a good tone. I have been planning to do a video demonstration similar to yours. However, I just watched one of your other videos about mouthpiece buzzing and I'm not sure I agree with some of what you're claiming in it. I'll take a look at your blog too. Possibly I've misunderstood - but from what I saw in that video it looked like you changed lip position from when you were free-buzzing to placement on the mouthpiece. But I'll look again and comment there. Nevertheless, it appears we agree about what the end result should be - a clear and focused sound.

I am probably one of the few people generally on Lindberg's side on this one. The doesn't mean I am totally anti buzz, I just think there is a lot of room for misuse. I personally had it wreck my own playing. The fact of the matter is that buzzing on the mouthpiece is not the same as buzzing on the horn. The mouthpiece is not long enough to give you a standing wave vibration. That being said, I am not totally anti buzz. It can help people focus the corners and yes you can use it for ear training. I have seen it help people get a clear sound in the low range especially. I just think there are a lot of ways to train your ears in other ways. Sing the music, or wind pattern it (no buzz) you can still hear the pitch you would get.

Terrible intonation, and no dynamics.

I agree, that is what happens when you try to play jazz on the mouthpiece alone... :-) But I hope my message gets through anyway!
