His depth of understanding of the Arabic language is phenomenal! I had no idea "hijab" and "khimar" had those meanings. I'm surprised that people are confused about covering the hair. It's a new phenomenon in our modern times. I don't think this was ever a cause of confusion before. However, covering also does not mean you are more pious than someone else because it depends on what is in the heart. Covering in the West right now takes a lot of courage. Stay strong sisters and if you can't cover your hair right now ask Allah to make you strong so that one day you will be able to.

overcometv I think these men just want these words to mean cover up. These are men discussing how women should dress! Women think for yourselves. Also if you want to live in the West if you cover up you are actually insulting people like my late Grandmother who fought for women's rights. Yes in the 1920's one of those rights was women wear less hideous clothing. People today do not realise this. Freedom for women to go swimming, to vote, to say how many children they want etc. Not to be dictated to by men. God wants men and women equal. Hopefully you will understand my point and you can be still a great Muslim without being pressured by other people what to wear. Live a good live and do good deeds is the most important thing to reach the next life.
@banan7308
@banan7308 6 жыл бұрын
Mary Rose Dwyer if your grandmother fought for equal rights then she would've fought for women having a choice on what they wear. If they choose to wear a headscarf then I'm sure your grandmother would support it because it's their CHOICE to. It's not two men dictating what women should wear, it's in the Qur'an. Are you even Muslim?

Assalam alaikum, I remember listening to an Islam in Focus show by Dr. Jamal Badawi in the 80's when discussing intoxicants in Islam and explaining that khamr comes from the root "khamara" meaning to cover one's mind or head; i.e. To cover one's mind or dull the mind from sensing something. It really hit me then khamr can apply not just to alcohol but any substance that dulls the mind or one's senses to one's surroundings. But the connection between khamr and khamise did not hit me (pun intended?) until tonight when I watched this video. Alhamduallah. 😊

+star hossain which is exactly where he failed in explaining. He used his own thinking and his pseudo Sunni base. He should have used Quran to explain this. He simply took a whole argument of covering or not and wrap around a single verse, when prowess of Quran is in fact in it's perpetual reminders of things. 24:31 is the verse in question and if there is any ambiguity or discrepancy either in translation or meaning, Quran insists on a better version but from within. 25:33 says that and his answer could have been from 7:26

Fudgie pie it was very scary for me at first which is why me and my friend started wearing it together. We both didn’t like it much at first but now I’m super confident and happy with it. I’ve noticed she’s lost a bit of confidence ever since she started wearing it and that is because she is very scared of what others think. I feel very happy with it on. I’ve learnt not to care about what others think and to just do what I want and it feels amazing. I hope you start wearing it too it’s scary at first but it really doesn’t matter in the end. We all need this. Even my friend is staring to love it.

I have been wearing a scarf and covering myself for 2 years and I can honestly say I get more respect from people around me regardless of nationality or culture. I struggle with anxiety and when I wear a hijab I feel safe and my anxiety goes down. I do get a bit of hate because wearing a hijab is a declaration of your faith and in the usa people have various opinions of Islam, but if you can get people to calm down and have an open discussion with you about your coverings and what it is you believe then it kind of extinguishes that hate.

No person can answer that question--God/Allah is the only one who decides who goes to heaven or hell. If you have any interest in understanding Islam, suggest you read "Islam and the Destiny of Man" by Charles Easton. Islam is far, far deeper than you think and even most Muslims have a very simplistic, cursory understanding of their own religion. Another great writer on Islam, particularly Sufi Islam, is Prof. William C. Chittick.

+Zarlasht Qadir Khan dear sister just an advice from someone who took the jump to wear the veil before you :) first have the intention, make a lot of duaa for god to make u fall in love with hijab, start looking and noticing other hijabis around, on instagram, facebook, youtube it will make u feel not alone and show you you can still be beautiful with hijab, buy few scarfs, and start trying it out at home even for an hour, don't tight it too much on the neck so it wont bother you, even if its going out to throw garbage try to do it few times outside, it will help you so much and no people will not be looking at you because you look weird relax they dont know that your new into hijab , if you feel that u cant make the big step then baby steps towards the ultimate goal , and allah sees ur effort, he will help you out, i love hijab i cant even describe the blessing that i feel when i'm all covered alhamdulillah may allah make it easy for you and all the sisters out there

Now that is a lovely thought. It's exactly how I feel, or would feel if I weren't an atheist. I do live by a few simple rules: love yourself and others, do no harm and don't judge. For religious people, if you truly believe all that is said about God, then in the end he's the only one with the knowledge and power to judge. Us humans should be most considered with how we behave ourselves.

I agree that khimar was used at the time to mean covering the head. But my reading of this verse, which this video seems to confirm, is that Allah is saying to draw the headcover over the chest, to cover it. I have heard that their dresses had open slits at the neck which could be revealing, but I do not know if this is correct for certain. This was a very easy way for them to be more modest without needing to make expensive new clothing. So the command is to cover the chest with something they are already wearing. But there is no command to cover the head, just an acknowledgement that this was being done at the time. So this video did not actually address whether covering the head is commanded by Allah in that verse.

To force a woman or bring harm to one because she doesn't want to wear a veil is haram. The intent is modesty.. but not just that take into account the time and place. Now while that being said, not wearing doesn't make you less Muslim and if you think so then you've lost sight of what is really important.

Not wearing a hijab is haram for someone who has reached puberty and isen't faced with direct harm such as extremist christian parents who have threatened to kill or kick their daughter out to the streets if she wears it. Ibdon't know what you mean when you say that not wearing it does not make you less a Muslim but like i said it is an obligation that has been placed on us and not carrying it out is to disobey Allah. Besides, its not just that many dont wear hijab, they also wear tight pants, full set make up and do other kinds of tabarruj. That is a major sin and the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam said that there would be women in later times who will be "dressed yet naked" as not be allowed to smell the fragrance of jannah. So please don't try to make it seem like a small sin to not wear hijab or to do tabarruj. Also, men must stop wearing tight pants that show the shape of their butt and thighs as well as the area between the navel and knees are awrah for them.

This has not convinced me . I understand what is being said , but i feel like if Allah is saying to use the current head covering you have on to cover your chest, i feel like the importance is clearly the chest area ans not the hair. I feel like if the hair was the important area to cover then it would of been specified. Back in the time the Quran was being recited/revealed to prophet Muhammad some women already wore a type of head covering for what ever reasons .There is a reason that so many Muslim women do not wear a hijab, it's because they honestly don't believe it is a requirement from Allah based on the above mentioned chapter.Thank you for this video , it was a truly interesting and smooth flowing discussion :)

+LOCO3k first and foremost, people really shouldn't be taking fiqh lessons from youtube and youtube can never been a fiqh and shariah institute. There are other schools of thoughts where music is considered permissible, and makeup, and the belief that women shouldn't just be kept in shoeboxes. Most would say it's not halal, but some would say it is. It is not an issue that is being talked about in this video. It's like Al Kahf all over again, Allah taught the people about the youths and the sacrifices they did and the amazing things they did and their questions afterwards were about how many of them were there or what type of dog was it. It's about relevance. There is a place and time for everything. These questions should not be on any youtube video and people really should not ever, EVER take fiqh advice from youtube. There are islamic teachers in your own communities to learn that properly from.

Don't u think that the more closer you are to Allah, all these external, small stuff would come easier for people to let go. Also it's disappointing that in a video with 2 men as the main subjects, the men watching the video chose to focus on the blurred women, or the faceless woman's hands or a THUMBNAIL. It is further proof to non-muslims especially that Muslim men seem incapable to control themselves and their eyes. There are going to be beautiful women everywhere. I have an issue with this talk. Veil in English can take these multiple meanings as well, Veil over the face or just a shawl. So in the end you have to look at the intent of the verse. The verse says to take the khimaar and to cover the chest/bosom, which is from collar bone to belly or even the front (sadr means chest as well as front). So the point is that women's entire chests be covered with a covering. My take is that if you want to wear a head covering that also does that then so be it.. There is nothing wrong with that. But if you just wear a shawl or covering that covers the chest then that is fine too! I don't think you can force it to mean headcover here when the intent is to cover the chests.

I find that, the majority of first generation Muslims - who want to act like westerners but do not want to leave the fold of Islam to do so - Take these misunderstandings to justify this. They want to act like their friends, they want to cave in to peer pressure. But they don't want to displease Allah, so how can they do both? This is why, Allah warns us against ignorance, and this is why the Prophet (pbuh) prayed for knowledge. It's because ignorance is the greatest tool that Iblis has against humanity. The devil will always attempt to misguide us, and If we do not do everything in our power to defend ourselves from this, then we have no one to blame but ourselves when we become misguided. Thank you for telling me this brother Nouman, for now when this is told to me by a Muslimah I can tell her the truth. I use to say "The Qur'an is guidance from Allah, yes, but it is the hadith of the prophet (pbuh) that explains to us in detail what Allah Has declared in the Qur'an" Now I can see, that it indeed means head covering.

propoetide That's an interesting way to approach religion propoetide. 20000 Americans convert to Islam every year. When questioned; these people previously being of various faiths or no faiths at all; having various degrees of education. Each and everyone of them said they converted to Islam because it is rational, it makes sense, it doesn't contradict any and all scientific revelation rather it CONFIRMS it. So; the fact that you are of the opinion that religion and in particular Islam is anti-rational, is most interesting. I wonder, do you know more then these people who chose to dedicate their entire lives to this ideology? Perhaps. Or perhaps you are a pessimistic person who enjoys seeing peoples hope and faith drain away. I'd really like to talk to your "Muslim" friend. Clearly; he/she needs to get better friends.

This video has some correct and some misleading points. Yes, Khimar can refer to a scarf that covers the head. From our understanding, this is also the meaning that was used during the time of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh. However, the informed conversation centers more around: does the Quran make obligatory for women to wear the "khimar" to cover their hair? I think it is reasonable to say that the only acceptable translation for this word, given its context and understanding at the time, is that referring to a headscarf. The question then becomes, what does the Quran say about this headscarf? The Quran in 24:33 asks the Prophet to tell the believing women to "yadribna bikhmurihinna 3ala juyuubihin." What does "yadribna" mean in this instance-does it necessitate the headscarf be worn? It seems like the obvious answer that yes, daraba is an added verb presuming that the khimar is already worn, and I agree that this is the default understanding and perhaps the most desirable understanding. However, is it obligatory to wear the khimar as a headscarf when the Quran is giving a specific instruction about how to wear the khimar? In other words, I'm suggesting that the instruction was made to be simple, since the women at the time already wore the khimar, so it asked them to use it to achieve the desired outcome: covering the breasts with a loose clothing. Rather than making new clothes, it makes sense to just cover the breasts with the clothes they already have. Additionally, if the Quran had instead said to just cover the breasts with clothing, it could be allowing for tight clothing to cover the breasts, but the objective is to cover the breasts with a loose clothing. And specifically mandating a cover with a loose clothing would have perhaps interrupted the rhyme of the verse and the eloquence of the Quran. Furthermore, we have no consensus on how this khimar was worn at the time of the Prophet pbuh. Did the women cover most of their hair, or all of their hair? Also, since the Prophet's wives are mentioned in the hadiths to have worn the niqab, if we are basing our explanation of how to wear it on hadith, why is it that we don't come to the conclusion that the niqab is also obligatory? As a matter of fact, there is a large group of people who do come to the conclusion that the niqab is obligatory. Some even point to the Quran drawing an equivalence between the wives of the Prophet and all believing women in regards to niqab. I am not a scholar, but I see that in the Quran, it is repeatedly mentioned that the Prophet Muhmmad pbuh is nothing but a **clear** warner. Why all this confusion then? I also see in the Quran, that it asks "do they invent about Allah what they do not know?" I do not know, but please do not pretend that you know neither, especially so casually as if it is obvious. To me, I read it and see that the traditional way is to cover the breasts using a headscarf, but it does not read as exclusionary to this being the only possible way of covering the breasts. And because it is the exemplified way, I agree that it is preferable. But don't scare women from joining Islam just because of something that is perhaps only preferable and not obligatory. Men know that it's not the hair of the woman that's the tipping point for attraction, for the majority of us, it is about covering the breasts, and so this understanding also agrees with my lived experience and that of the men I know. If you look at the Quran alone for this issue (not that the hadith is not relevant), you will find that women are instructed to cover their juyuub (cleavage) and to lower a portion of their jalabeeb (loose clothing) over themselves. This is a simple command, cover breasts and wear loose clothing. From this alone, you can follow what your heart believes is sufficiently modest, not cheating Allah swt, because that is only cheating yourself, and I predict that most people would tend to wear sufficiently modest clothes without all the regulations put forth. For the layperson, I see the advantage of giving a specific requirement to "simplify", so I'm not opposed to it, but don't make it more confusing in the process, and recognize that these requirements would have been written more than a century from the Prophet's death pbuh. In many regions of the world today, many people who wear the hijab are treated not fairly, to the point where it hinders them from getting work or threatens their safety on the street. We should not just accept that this is God's intention for them if the hijab is not unequivocally mandatory. Encourage people to dress modestly, and to adhere to the clear principles (loose clothing, cover cleavage) and don't beat people down for that which you are unsure about. If you made it this far into the comment, please share your opinion :)

So happy this topic has been brought up and discussed as it’s been a recent debate upon women recently. I think the conflict comes from women initially wearing it not knowing fully the reason why. As we get older and read in the quraan , like you said , some feel it’s not clear enough and a lot have actually taken off their hijab for that reason, which is unfortunate. I partially blame some scholars in the past that hadn’t taken the time to properly discuss and explain this topic clearly, rather they’ve focused on just how a woman is seductive to men, from a more objectifying perspective. Another issue I feel women face is that some mention, that ok maybe it is reccomended that we do wear it but is not compulsory as it is not mentioned anywhere that there is any punishment for not doing so. Would love to hear Dr.Khan do a long talk discussing these issues and helping us find the correct answers we’re looking for.

but the way i see it is that the aya is focused on women covering their bosoms. The emphasis wasn't on covering the head itself. If it was that much of a necessity it would have been worded differently. The Quran is worded the way it is worded on purpose. And focus was placed on other things that are far more important such as salah, siam, lying, stealing, zaka etc
@Renesmee15Jake25

Thank you making that point! The Quran is worded with a purpose. There are other things that are way way more emphasised than the issue of covering hair, yet Muslims hold it with such high passion as of it is the most repeated verse of the Quran. It is not. Salat, zakat, good deeds, taqwa, modesty are some of the central themes. God knows best.

In bible and Torah it is explicitly mentioned that women must cover their "hair". Quran doesn't have such verse. Hair or head is never mentioned. The meaning is vague and always hidden. It gives a description of how to use a "cultural" garment. the organ that is explicitly mentioned is chest/breast. Maybe you should focus on that. Moreover the ablution before each prayer is focusing on the parts that are exposed to outside. Hands, face, feet (think about sandalet, we are in arabia so no boots ;) ), neck and head (hair). Those rules are not different from men to women, so the parts that are exposed to outside suppose to be same. If you cover your hair be my guest but I believe god knows how to say "cover your hair".

I don't like it when women would try to twist things about wearing hijab or khimar simply because they don't want to wear it. Girl, if you don't want to wear it.. Then don't wear it. Just remember that in the end of the day (when you die), you cannot argue with Allah. You're gonna have to take responsibility for it.

It's not that simple for some sisters, of having a choice to where it or not!! That is mostly a western thing. In an Islamic country there is no choice! In some western instances there is also no choice, the father or brother simply won't allow that, and no Muslim man will show any respect to a woman who is displaying herself, and not living rightous.

This is petty. We men are supposed to be protectors of women. It is their safety, their security, their access to education, to jobs, to financial security, to their health, to safe child birth, to their freedom from exploitation as well as to non violent marriage that should be our concern. In these areas we have failed our women! There should of course be regulation of sexual behaviour. But that should apply to both sexes equally. And we should discuss this in an honest fashion. What are the principles that we can adopt when discussing the regulation of sexual behaviour in society in general? It cannot be the total restriction of women's freedom of movement, of association, of speech and thought as well as curtailing their desires and ambitions. What does the hijab achieve? What is so sinful about a woman not wearing a hijab? What is with women's hair that its exposure will lead to society's moral collapse?

Khimar is literally a piece of cloth or a cover. It could be a table cloth, a shawl, a blanket, curtains, any item of clothing or anything that is a piece of cloth that covers something. Going further into one story, it’s described as a cloak. The rich women owned cloaks but the servants didn’t own them. So when rich women went to the edge of the settlement to relieve themselves in the night, the men would recognise them by their cloak and leave them alone. But servants would be harassed by the men. So to stop this occurring, the servants were told to wear a khimar (cloak) so that they wouldn’t be harassed by the men. So they would be ‘recognised’ as free and wealthy women. The idea that Arabs considered a head covering as the meaning of khimar was a later interpretation. Yes a khimar could be used to cover the head, but that doesn’t make it a head covering. It could be as easily used to cover the ground before sitting down. The Quran says to use khimar (a piece of cloth/clothing) to cover the cleavage/bussom, but quite literally the ‘sacred gaps’. The places on the body where flesh meets flesh. In other words, the places the Quran says to cover, with khimar or otherwise, are between the legs, the cleavage and the armpits can also be considered in the same way as the flesh meets there too. There is never any mention of covering the head at any point in the Quran. As the Quran states very clearly that nothing has been left out of this book, I think if Allah had intended head covering, He would have been explicit about that intent. Also as the Prophet himself was reprimanded by Allah for making laws to suit his wives, when they were not from Allah, then we absolutely should not be making laws or even suggesting them with this kind of semantic acrobatics. If it was intended, Allah would have been explicit in the Quran. He was explicit about the other important issues.

Some people study the arabic language for 10 years even then they don't pass judgement on the Quran but some random people on youtube will Google the meaning of a word thinking that they understand everything about it without looking at the context of the ayah or what the scholars of Arabic language say about this ayah. If you are knowledgeable in the arabic language and have the tools of Arabic then only you can come to intellectually acceptable opinions.

Thank you for the way you approached this question. It's not a clear straightforward order in the Quran to cover the head, and therefore it requires some level of trust to accept someone's interpretation surrounding the obligation. I really did not believe it was an obligation to cover my hair, and most speakers do not help at all with the way they speak about it. Even now I still don't I know for sure because I don't know Arabic that way, but I decided to start wearing the hijab anyway, may Allah accept it. I just want to add that we are speaking about a piece of clothing that comes on top of all the others, after you've covered your body already, and that you don't have to wear when you're alone or with specific people. In ONE aya of the Quran, the word khimar is used in the context of an order to draw it over the chest, and the word khimar refers to a veil that covers the hair. Even this explanation doesn't clear up for me how or why the hijab has become such a central topic today, with some men making video after video about it, judging so harshly women who don't wear it. I genuinely believe that the attitude in most discussions surrounding the topic is what fuels the doubt that the hijab really is an obligation. I wish more people had the same approach as in this video.

Our voice is considered an Aurah because voices of women are sweet and that might attract the attention of men.. all these things Allah has given us for our own benefit. I know the culture has ruined many things for us. Islam has given many rights to women, even if she works she doesn't need to provide for the family, she can hold property, keep her own surname etc..

I liked the way he was talking, he seemed very calm and nice, however I do not agree with this at all, if allah wanted the head to be specifically covered, he would say "use the Khimar to cover your head up to your belly" however, it does not say this in the Quran it says to put the khimar over yourself. I feel like Muslim women always get pressured, for instance some people are saying that the girls in the video shouldn't be there as they look too beautiful..... That's just stupid. Some scholars have told women to cover anything that is attractive when that's not true. They just need to cover their chest and their backsides to protects themselves and stop men from thinking bad things about her.

That all depends on the preproduction phase. Was it well planned and scripted? I think this was adlibed cause of his knowledge of the matter. doesn't seem like he was reading any of this. if one camera was used ull have to make multiple takes of same discussion from different angles then you can edit and cut to make it seem like multiple cameras were used, this process takes longer. if you have multiple cameras then you just tape the scene ones or as many times as you like it till you have what you need and then edit in post production. benefit of multicam production is you can edit on the spot through use of programs and mixers. but this process requires more staff. camera. lighting. director. technical director who is usually the board operator as well. an inexperienced team will produce this video anywhere from 10 to 20 hours depending on how organized they were. an experienced team can fly through this within an hour or two at the most.

Mr. Nouman Ali Khan is missing the point. Nobody says a word that means covering the head is not mentioned in Quran. He should have recited the verse and the interpreted. The argument is that the Allah says to women in the verse , "use your khimers( the veil that you wear on your head and shoulder) to cover your breasts or chest. " , so from this verse it is clear that wearing khimer is not obligated but covering breasts is made compulsory.

As an Arab, knowing that word meaning naturally and seeing how arabs used to dress before and now that fabric wasn't measured to like hide the hair completely there isn't any single indications for hiding hair, even if it was on the head they would always show some hair even if they used it but now I think we use hijab In matter of Cms ... if one hair is out we hate on the woman when in reality if she was modest .. regardless .. that strand of hair doesn't matter and the importance in that Aya is to cover the chest and neck area .. there is no indication that says the hair is strictly shouldn't be visible.. old arabs with scarfs they used to show some part of their hairs and it was never a taboo.

Khimar goes from the head to the chest yeah? Meaning it covers the face too. Plus Allah says don't be like the women of jahilliyah. So if they covered in jahilliyah, it means we need to cover more than they did. This is in line with what the video has clarified. Ofcourse if you don't wanna wear you could find excuses not to. The agreement of scholars is enough for us to adhere to the rulings of Islam though. I hope that helped

Please give my salaam to Mr Ali Khan and convey my message to him: It is great that you discussed the meaning of khemar. Yes, it come from khomor and it is also used to refer to alcohol. The word khumra is also used to refer to the container or the pot where alcohol is formed (takhmir). You have to cover or put a cap on the kumra to make the takhmir happen. Khemar is what is used to cover the tip/head of something. So khemar is the head cover which as you said was also worn by men too. However, there is no verse to tell women that they should cover their heads as part of their religious duty. Yes, the verse says use your khemar to cover your cleavage and khemar is already taken for granted but not as part of duty since there was no other Ayah revealed previously to tell women to wear khemar. Khemar is part of tradition in hot and sunny Middle Eastern environment. Remember that Quran was revealed a particular context and used a particular language and referred to some particular traditions. This does not mean that Quran is only useful for that particular time or place. Quran is for all times and places. However to interpret we need to understand the context as much as we need to understand the language. In the Arabian context Quran is not asking women to their clothes adding to their financial burdens. But rather wants to use whatever they traditionally wear in more decent way. For women today the message is clear. The message is the content not the container. Modesty and covering of private parts of body is what Quran invites to do. If women were wearing anything else Quran perhaps would have referred to it to be used to cover their cleavage. I invite you and myself to think more carefully about the spirit of Quran. If Quran asks people to look at Camel to understand Allah's creation this does not mean that we must today find a camel in New York. Yes camel is included the message but the message is not about the centrality of camel in understanding Allah. Allah may guide all of us to truth.

I am a new Muslim. I am from the UK, and I am currently living in UAE. I have read the Quran. There is nowhere in the Quran that mentions head, hair, face and hands but covers their sexual parts, chest and walking sexually. We are only asked to cover our heads to cover our head to pray to God. My husband, a `Muslim all his life, insists I should wear it, and I tell him it is between God and myself - so I seek guidance on this

Thank you : ) But I'm still slightly confused - the function of "hijab" or khimar as said in Qur'an is for the purpose of modesty so I have two questions: 1) Can you not be modest as in still cover your chest wear baggy clothes etc without wearing a hijab/covering on your head? 2) Some muslim women also wear turbans where the head is covered but the neck shows - is this ok in Islam as in is it permissable? I'm trying to do research on hijab and it's so confusing - is the covering on your head really mandatory? If you don't are you much more likely to go to Hell? Please help me!

Assalamualaikum, 1. I know what you mean, but this was ordained by Allah. God said to cover the head as well as the neck/cleavage area. If one tries to accomplish a goal without taking the steps they've been told to take, do you think they are serious or at least will be successful? 2. Well, I'm not a scholar. But seems like, at least from the video, that the neck should be covered. 3. If it was asked clearly in the Qur'an then it is mandatory. However, saying that one is going to hell for not doing it is a BIG thing. Only Allah knows.

this confusion I had to face with in many people around me when I started wearing hijab/himar 7 months ago. Everyone was saying "no its too much just cover your chest, or neck". I am sure I have to fear Allah more than anyone else. Many thanks for this very clear, simple, direct and honest information.
