My husband is in his final semester as an engineering student. As his college career winds down, I have been watching this video often and it brings me to tears. As a non-traditional student, he often struggled, but his hard work paid off, and he will be graduating Magna Cum Laude. Seeing this video is a touching reminder of how engineers influence the lives of people across the globe. Thank you engineers!

I watched this a few years back when I was struggling to choose which field to continue in. I remember how I bawled my eyes out after coming across this video, as it reminded me that this field has always been my dream and it will always be what I'm most passionate about. Fast forward a few years and I'm now in uni majoring in Engineering, and I couldn't be happier. This video will always be special to me, Thank you so much for that!!

Beautifully done! I decided to become an engineer in 3rd grade watching NASA assemble the CM and SM for Apollo 13; I saw Apollo 12 on the pad. Since then I have had the privilege of engineering everything from the Apache, Blackhawk, and Super Stallion to the Osprey, F22/23; rocket motors; shuttle components; pumps, pieces to help children walk and anything in between. For those even remotely interested in STEM, remember the Grateful Dead, "....what a long strange (and fun) trip its been"...Party On Engineers!!

When I think about the word spirituality, I think of engineers. They create things that can uplift the human spirit. To soar to new heights even with something as simple as an atom. They are the puzzle solvers, the wanderers, the seekers, the creators, the thinkers. It will only be a matter of time before the edge of the universe will be something from our past.

Yes - an amazing video that evokes great inspiration - and yet it equally evokes despair in me. Even in the 1980's some 5% of engineers were women and today it is 14%, with a ~20% of engineering students being women. Barry - I am wondering if you see the imbalance - in what is otherwise a great contribution?
@BarryBelmont8 жыл бұрын
+Patricia Beddows I completely and sadly agree. I think the persistent imbalance in many STEM fields is something that ought to be addressed and solved. Unfortunately, the problem is systemic and thus we must alter the system to do so. A lot of us are working to do that right now and I think many more of us need to. Because this world could use a few more engineers. I bemoan the fact that more women (and others) weren't in this video. A lack of time, of resources, and (tragically) of history in the field of engineering dampened what this video could have been. There were many videos I would have loved to include (such as one where a woman hears for the first time instead of the kid, and another with a group of girls fiddling with a Bunsen burner), but I needed the videos' owners to grant me permission to use the footage and didn't get them in those cases. So from an initial dearth sprang more dearths. In fact, I believe it even undercuts what I think was the most powerful moment in the video for me, when that mother sees her child via ultrasound for the first time, by reducing that woman (the only featured woman in the whole thing) to merely a "woman's role." It was meant to say more "hey, look at how incredible this is, parents can see their children well before they are born!" and instead comes across a little more, for lack of a better word, patriarchal. If I were to do it again, I would do it different.

I'm having a hard time deciding between electrical and engineering. I feel like I'd be more fulfilled in engineering, but it pays less than electrical. On top of that you have to pay for 4-5 years of schooling for engineering whereas you get a paid apprenticeship for electrical. I don't know what to do. *end rant* Very nice video!
