What a wonderful way to express your feelings about this song! As an old man, propriety says I am not supposed to have such feelings - but I do. Natalie is my secret love. Her voice is so rich and strong that it draws you into her heart. That, folks, is truly talent of a special sort.

Beautiful song and a gorgeous voice. The river is the place that I like to be. I like the idea of being buried under a willow by the river. Preferably, after I have died!

I love the Cowboy Junkies, but Natalie's stripped down arrangement and amazing vocals on this version just blows the original away.

Perfect in everyway. This song makes me think of the good LORD above. Set those demons free and let GOD do his work through you.

No disrespect at all to Cowboy Junkies but Nat just strips this down and nails it with the power and emotion of her one-of-a-kind voice. But I admit I’m biased.

Love the original version by the Cowboy Junkies but this version featuring Natalie Merchant (ex 10,000 Maniacs) is lovely...

I like anything Natalie Merchant sings, because she gives her interpretation and her voice is like no other. But The Cowboy Junkies original version is best with Marlo's delicate voice and the music--violin, accordions and keyboard. As for the song itself, It is surely one of many versions of the ancient Willow Garden folk song, of which there hundreds. Even Whiskey Lullaby is a descendant, of the Willow Garden, though usually murder is involved, as in Joan Baez and the Greenbriar Boys' "Banks of The Ohio"

not to take away from his talent, I love him, but the mandolin and the fiddle are tuned the same so learning one once you already know how to play the other would be more of a technique change than totally picking up another instrument
