Brad, please just keep doing what you want to do! Being a musician myself who puts out videos and sometimes gets weird remarks (even by her friends), I can only say that music (and zen) for me are the main answers to the questions in life. Music makes us human. Music needs to be expressed and performed, otherwise what’s the point? There’s an innocence about human beings making music of any kind. While we’re doing it, we have to be focussed and present, we have to stop fighting, causing chaos or pain. Greetings and all the best from the person who chatted with you about aliens at Benediktushof :-) „And some people say it’s just rock and roll Oh but it gets you right down to your soul You’ve gotta just keep on pushing Push the sky away And if your friends think that you should do it different And if they think that you should do it the same You’ve gotta just keep on pushing Push the sky away“ Nick Cave „Push the sky away“ 🤘

Droning on about "ego" tends to be a marker of ego - because they are painstakingly trying to model what they think a realized person acts like. Which is itself an egoic activity.
@elzoogАй бұрын
Ok, so it was my ego that is criticizing Brad for his ego. I'll go ahead and admit that. That still doesn't answer the question of whether or not Brad is making people watch his music stuff in a zen video because of HIS ego. Whether or not an "enlightened master" has an ego, doesn't answer the question. For all I know, an enlightened master might have a constant hard dick so that he needs to have sex all the time (like Trungpa Rinpoche). That still doesn't answer my question, which is, whether or not Brad is putting music in his non-music related videos even if people don't like it, because of HIS ego. I'm not trying to "model what I think a realized person acts like". Given the example of Trungpa Rinpoche, if I did that, I would be asking everybody to have sex with me.

People have weird ideas about monastics, yogins and practitioners, of Zen and otherwise. It's been a pleasure to encounter these sorts of people, and realize they aren't anything like what I imagined at some point. I seem to remember countless text saying that about the states of samadhi, realizations, etc., and even the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas; they aren't what we think (or maybe even could think?). Play on, good sir! I've found so many new bands and even genres thru this channel, just like I've found many new points about the Dharma specific to Zen, and I've loved it all... especially when I (or "I"?) find it challenging.

"To me the musical part - is zen in practice!" One of your German ancestors Arthur Schopenhauer had a lot to say about this. He was the first western philosopher to study Buddhism seriously. I've sometimes been annoyed by the musical intros, but I'm annoyed by any intros even in podcasts where they have some short rock guitar intro tune to start the episode. It's simply because I wear headphones and the music often is a bit louder than the speech volume so it jumps out and startles me. But I've become less annoyed by your intros recently because I've noticed that your attitude of bravely putting your "amateur" singing out there is softening my own complexes about performing music, in a way, I don't know how to explain it. Critiquing your music intros as somehow showing unwise ego-attachment misses something (seemingly) fundamental about Buddhism, quite apart from missing what’s fundamental about your approach to Buddhist teaching. You’ve already transcended your ego by acknowledging you have one, transcendence simply allows you avoid being hooked by it. (Getting “rid” of ego is neither necessary nor possible). And you’re the Hardcore Zen guy, the sex-positive Buddhist Nina Hartley fan, the punk rock Buddhist. That’s your lane and I’m grateful you’re in it. Expecting more of you is obviously more ego driven than you doing your thang. When one comes to Buddhism from Western upbringing, it’s hard to not project those expectations about how “religious” teachers should behave. Yet as you’ve openly discussed in many videos, all teachers are human beings not supernatural saints. Rather than pretending otherwise, you authentically own your quirks and share your earthly passions. Of course, ego is indulged whenever you get hooked by negative YT comments. There’s no need (ex-ego) to directly respond to them, but here we are 🙏
