I was surprised that Polly Bergen chose #1 in Game 3. Although she was born in Tennessee, she was raised in Indiana and often mentions her Indiana connection. #1 said that he attended "the University of Purdue". Anyone from Indiana should know it is Purdue University. (Also, it was odd when #1 was asked what MVP stood for, and he replied "National Basketball Association". He must have been so primed to expect that question that he gave the answer to the wrong acronym. It's like the person cheating off of someone's test who has a different set of questions.)

Who else jumped when the first guy's snake popped out?
I grew up seeing enough baseball cards and pictures of sports stars in the newspapers and magazines to recognize Gene Conley. The Braves weren't happy with Conley playing in the NBA. It would be impossible today as long as the playoffs in both sports last (and with the Celtics winning so many championships back then). But even in 1958-59, playing for the Celtics would mean that Conley would miss all of spring training and even a week or two of the beginning of the season. Also after a number of good seasons for the Braves, Conley had his first really bad season in baseball which is why he might have turned to basketball again. (He played for the Celtics in 1952-53 while he was still mostly a minor league baseball player. but didn't go back to the Celtics until 1958.) He never pitched again for the Braves. They traded him to the Phillies on March 31, 1959. (The Celtics final playoff game was on April 9 and it might have gone longer except that the Celtics swept the Minneapolis Lakers in four straight games to win the NBA Championship. The Phillies first regular season game was on April 10. Conley didn't pitch in a game until April 26 and he didn't get his first start until May 8 although he pitched 9 innings in relief on May 2.) Eventually the Phillies would trade the 6'8" Conley to the Boston Red Sox (at least both of his teams would have a home in the same city) for 6'6" pitcher Frank Sullivan. It was the tallest trade in the history of baseball. Because the Braves were still in Boston when Conley played for them briefly in 1952 before his poor performance led them to send him back to the minors, Conley has the distinction of playing for three different major league teams in Boston. (There are many players who played for three major league teams in NYC when there were three major league baseball teams there: Sal Maglie who was an MG on WML is one example.) A greater distinction is that Conley is the only player to be on an NBA championship team (three years with the Celtics, 1959-61) and a World Series winner in baseball (1957 Braves). He is one of only 13 athletes to play in the NBA and Major League Baseball: Danny Ainge, Frank Baumholtz, Conley, Chuck Connors, Dave DeBusschere, Johnny Gee, Dick Groat, Steve Hamilton, Mark Hendrickson, Cotton Nash, Ron Reed, Dick Ricketts and Howie Schultz.

That was a tour de Force, thanks. If the braves had held onto a 3-1 lead in the just completed 1958 World Series, Conley would be the only player to play on two reigning major sports champions at once.

Gene Conley went on to pitch for the Red Sox, while still playing for the Celtics. He was better-than-average at both sports, in my opinion. When I was young, I saw him play both at Fenway Park and at Boston Garden. His wife wrote a biography about him, which I really enjoyed, titled "One of a Kind". He was that.

On WML, I preferred that the mystery guest was someone I had heard of. On TTTT, it spoils it a bit when I recognize the actual contestant as I did in Game 3. That's one less game where I can play along.

How can she be Miss World 1959 when the show was 1958 ?? (she won 1958)

I miss Geritol as the weekly sponsor. Gene Conley was a much better baseball player than basketball but to do both, you have to be great to make the pros. Even the worst pro in any sport would be very good to great against a non-pro. Polly did her best to behave. That snake in game one would have looked great if the show was in color. The three Miss Worlds were all attractive young ladies. Thanks for the video.

Interesting that you claim Gene Conley was a good.pitcher. The year this episode was first broadcast, Conley had a record of 0-9. In 1962, Conley and teammate Pumpsie Green boarded a plane for Israel after a loss at Yankee Stadium.

@rmelin13231Ай бұрын
@@kenyongray2615 FWIW, I agree with you. He was a good basketball player, and an exceptional pitcher in his prime, playing for an outstanding basketball team, and a less than mediocre baseball team. I saw him play both many times. His wife wrote his biography - "One of a Kind". A very good read.
