In the past year, we've lost not only Polly Bergen and Jayne Meadows, but now Betsy Palmer, too. Betsy was really the last of the surviving regular panel members from the classic Goodson-Todman shows (in her case, on "I've Got a Secret"), making this especially sad for us fans of these programs. In tribute to her memory, today I'm posting the three episodes where she was on the panel of TTTT. Not the happiest note to start the channel off with, but as I've said in these situations in the past, I always think it's better to watch these shows and remember the joy these performers brought to us, rather than our just feeling sad about their passing. I sincerely believe that this is what they would have wanted. As a result of this unexpected deviation from schedule, regular postings to the new TTTT channel will begin tomorrow. -------------------------- To stay up to date with postings, please consider supporting the TTTT channel by subscribing. The TTTT channel will feature all available episodes of the nighttime CBS series that ran from 1956 to 1968, with a new show posted every weekday in original broadcast order. To Tell the Truth (CBS) Thanks you. I remember Betsy Palmer especially as a panelist from the Goodson-Todman shows. May she rest in peace and never be forgotten.

Is it wrong of me to say that appearing on these G-T shows may be all that she is remembered for?
@totellthetruthcbs42209 жыл бұрын
Zachary Dunlap-Tunnage Betsy Palmer? Actually, the sad fact is, she's mainly remembered for playing the serial killing mother of Jason Voorhes in the original Friday the 13th.

Just for those who don't know, at 11:28, Hy is referencing Don's starring role in the film "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell"
@savethetpc64069 жыл бұрын
*+OnlyFairWeather* ***** I've been listening to a lot of old radio shows from the 30s & 40s lately (Fred Allen and Jack Benny, mostly), and they made a lot of jokes about how Don Ameche always starred in biographical documentaries of people who were no longer living. So even though I didn't _know_ about his role as Alexander Graham Bell, I figured that's what it must have been. :)
@savethetpc64069 жыл бұрын
***** I don't know why I wrote "documentaries." I meant dramatizations -- movies based on real people's lives. I looked up Don Ameche's IMDb page myself after reading your comment. Besides playing Alexander Graham Bell in 1939, he also played Stephen Foster in _Swanee River_ the same year and had a major role in a film adaptation of actress Lillian Russell's life story in 1940, so that's probably why they made all those jokes.

It's a wonderful movie. Sentimental and heavily fictionalized but very charming. Loretta Young costarred.

I find the third sequence very impressive as the curtain rises on the three musicians playing a Christmas carol amid the stage snow. It's obvious from this that even early on, TTTT's directors were willing to take risks for visual variety. "What's My Line? Sunday" never did this sort of visual surprise. I can almost hear John Daly on WML replying to Gil Fates's proposed ideas, "Look kiddo, if you want to do this sort of stuff, do it on 'To Tell the Truth.' " And they did.

I can’t help but think Betsy Palmer always seems just so sweet and kind. Plus she had such a fresh young look about her. Even when she played Micheal Myers mother. She looked like she was 40 but really she was about 65 or 70.

Since I was raised as a child in the Salvation Army I was surprised at some of the questions asked by the panel...but, then I must realize they had no reason to know that an officer wouldn't know about a Broadway show, nor a movie. Also, Kitty asking who designed their uniforms and "hats". Every Christmas Gary Moore had a Salvation Army group of musicians on I've Got a Secret and it was obvious he greatly respected the Army. I'm sure I remember the young officer who had married being on his programme about that time. The Senior Major was used to identify years of service, I'd say.

That "hat" is called a BONNET. And another game show that respected the Salvation Army was Bill Cullen because of the help they gave his family when he was diagnosed with Polio!🎈🎈🎈

Hy Gardner (1908-1989) was a celebrity gossip columnist for the New York Herald Tribune. I notice he comes up funny lines and puns: wonder if G-T hired him for much the same reasons they selected Hal Block on WML in 1950.

That salvation army girl; why did she said she didn't think she played on a street corner last night? That's why I didn't vote for her. It was only "last night." She should have known if she played or not

I don't believe there is a rank in the Salvos as Senior Major. In all my years of growing up in the Army I knew of majors as a rank but not a senior major. Perhaps it was a different in that era but her answer threw me off track.

Do we know how the impostors were briefed before the show? Were they given information in general about the Contestant's profession, work and so, and information of particular interest concerning specific details?

Second game: the third guy looks rather old to be a young man. Freeze at 9:38: I wonder if the directors always lined up the 3 contestants or if they sometimes staggered them for a visual effect. As positioned here, I would have a hard time believing the second contestant was actually young.

Of course, the real Alice Watson would give her share to The Salvation Army! :) But was a total of $1000 supposed to be shared by three people, or did each one get a thousand?
@totellthetruthcbs42209 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, the money was divided evenly. It worked this way since the pilot episode.
@SuperWinterborn9 жыл бұрын
***** *@To Tell The Truth*: Then why not choose an amount that was divisible by three? I mean that would make sense since they always had three contestants. But that's my opinion of what's the most logical thing to do, of course.
@totellthetruthcbs42209 жыл бұрын
SuperWinterborn I've wondered that myself. They should have made it $300, which would always divide up evenly no matter how many incorrect votes they got. Note that in the pilot episode, incorrect votes received $150, which is also divisible by three no matter how many votes they got. I guess the producers just decided that the audience wouldn't care. The potential extra $200, max, per round wouldn't have broken them.

To Tell the Truth (CBS) Well, thanks for explaining this division of the money for me, both here and in reply to my direct question about it on another video. It was not clear to me at _all_ before I read your first explanation. In a way it's not really fair that impostors who don't fool anybody get as much money as the people who _do_ fool the panel, but in a way it's kind of nice and makes me feel less sorry for them. I actually love it when the panel is totally wrong and the person who got no votes at all turns out to be the real one! (As happened twice in this episode)
