The Save project is based on the story of Opanas Dermenzhi, a famous Ukrainian architect responsible for thousands of architectural structures in the southern region of Ukraine. It was he who built the Antonivskyi Bridge. Opanas Opanasovych and his wife Maria Georgievna, like many other townspeople, remained in their homes in Oleshky after the capture of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine. However, after the dam was blown up, before they could evacuate, they found themselves in a water trap - with Russians on one side and the river on the other, washing away roads and filling their homes with water. Will the architect's family be saved?
The young director Serhiy was born and raised in Oleshky. This is a town in the Kherson region, which lies on the left bank of the Konka River. The nearest resort towns are no more than 100 kilometres away. Paradise on earth, as Serhii calls it.
In 2011, Serhiy moved to Kyiv to conquer the capital. The young director misses his home all the time, because it was perhaps the only place where he felt happy. He tried to go home to his native Oleshky every month, because it was the only place where he could relax and be energised to continue creating. In the garden near the house with his grandparents, he often listened to old records, enjoying the intoxicating aroma of the fruit trees. For his family, Oleshky was a place of strength. The strength of his family.
That is why, in 2014, when the Russians occupied Crimea and part of eastern Ukraine, my grandparents decided to stay in Oleshky against all odds. They believed that the Ukrainian army would be able to take back all the territories. They were convinced that the war would never touch their quiet, bright town. Eight years later, everything has changed. Russia has captured most of the Kherson region. Serhii tries to persuade his grandparents to leave, but they are adamant. They continue to believe that the Russian evil will be defeated. Hard days are coming in Sergiy's life. He cannot go to his grandparents. He can only see them through the screen of his mobile phone. He is in unbearable pain.
On 11 November 2023, the Ukrainian army liberates Kherson. Serhii's heart is filled with hope. He realises that it is only 15 kilometres from the right bank of Kherson to Oleshky, and that he will be able to meet his grandparents in a little while. He just needs to be patient.
Everything changes on the night of 6 June 2023. Russians blow up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Water spills over the Kherson region, flooding the town of Oleshky. The water rises so fast that Serhii's grandparents are forced to get out onto the roof of the house. After that, the region loses power.
Serhiy becomes depressed, he doesn't know what to do and keeps trying to find at least some options to save his loved ones. Sergiy's friend Maksym comes to visit him and suggests that they go to Kherson together to try to find a way to save his grandparents on the spot. The first people the boys come across are two desperate volunteers who have managed to evacuate people from the occupied territory twice on their own. But the boys' optimism fades after the Russians resume shelling. The occupiers are hitting all the boats they see on the water. They deliberately do this to prevent Ukrainians from evacuating their own. But even after the refusal, the guys don't give up, they go to the danger zone near Antonivskyi Bridge...
