TO THE CLASS OF US | Calarts Animated Film 2024 🎓

On high school graduation day, two friends learn how to say goodbye to the past -- and most importantly, to each other. 🎓
My second year film at Calarts! This has truly been a journey -- from the beginning to completion. This film was initially made inspired by my own, personal hardships of being able adjust to a new life in college, leaving the environment I've known my whole life behind and starting anew (which I've talked about quite a bit in my past vlogs if you've been watching my content for a while). However, throughout the process I've learned and grown so much, not only in the sense of completing my film, but most importantly, I also learned how to let go of the past -- along with my film characters throughout this film. Plus, this film even got to turn into a little high school reunion project with my friends who voice acted in the film!

this is beautiful. i remember entering middle school and seeing the students before me graduate.. without reaaaaally thinking abt it. but now as im the one graduating, i feel the exact whirlwind of emotions that this animation really captured. the fear, the excitement and the hard to swallow fact that the life ive been living so far.. will become a memory and a stepping stone for the life that is ahead of me. i really liked the contrast in colour scheme between the graduating and the highschool / kindergarden memories !!!! the deep blues n warm oranges vs the pastel, carefree and innocent greens really resonated with the emotions i was feeling in each scene. it felt symbolic that even if there is change, change is also beautiful haha !! the gentle music was very comforting and the voiceovers were done so well :,) ^_^ "i'll send you photos" hit me in the feels 😭thank you for another lovely film n amazing job

This is such a great short film,growing up is such a scary thing, having to leave friends to peruse your dreams and goals can leave you on a chokehold.But in the end people ,things and aspirations come and go. 0:41 I just have to say, I love the "Whisper of the Heart" reference. Hands down the BEST Studio Ghibli movie of all time!!! This is so beautiful and incredibly heartfelt. It reminded me of my own feelings when I've had to deal with change as well. It brought back a lot of memories and that's another beautiful thing about storytelling and your short film. A good story is relatable to the audience in the way it makes us feel and you DEFINITELY did an amazing job at that.

I’m graduating in a couple weeks and honestly I want to cry- but for different reasons. I never really had any solid friends and i let anxiety control my entire high school life. The hardest part about graduating to me isn’t the memories I will miss, it’s the memories I have missed. This was a beautiful animation, I wish everyone else graduating this year a wonderful future! :) If you’re still in school and are similar to me, please, don’t let your fears or hesitation get in the way of you enjoying your school years! ❤

Congrats I am all nostalgic now (in a good way) :') I never get to experience highschool graduation due to Covid... it just ends so abruptly and now suddenly 4 years have passed. Never thought I'd say this but my highscool days were honestly where life felt so colourful to me, just like how you illustrate this animation. So vibrant, so many moments were shared, grieved and celebrated ♡ Still in contact with my highschool closest friends, sure it's not the same as it used to be, but it's not an unwelcomed change. I didn‘t expect this to make me cry😭, but when they started to talk about change and not wanting to grow up I started to tear up. After finishing school, so many things changed. I really hated it at first but now I‘m really grateful and happy. It‘s like the same thing he said with the glasses. We might loose things with time passing by, but at the same time we also gain new things. This is a wonderful animation veda💗 I don‘t look up to you only because of your art but because you are someone I can relate to. You are like a big sister. This brought me to tears. I have left my Elementary 2 years ago and never looked back. Change is scary and I missed everyone back there. I remember making a graduation photo to look back on how much me and my class grew by taking a look at every photo from the school album and make it into a video. It took 4 months but it was worth every second.

This was a lovely animation! I definitely understand that feeling, the transition from primary school to high school felt exactly like this. All my friends were going to different schools, leaving me to take the next step alone. I cried so hard when the final day came, and the final hugs….. So this really hit home. as i slowly approach the end of my high school years, and even though i still have a couple years to go, i totally relate to this sentiment. i don't want to have to finally face the fact that ill never actually attend the college of my dreams (which happens to be calarts). but at the same time, i almost can't wait to get out there into the real world and see what exactly it's all about. thank you so much for making this film. it's beautiful, the soundtrack fits so well, your art style is adorable, and the story could resonate with so many people. amazing, amazing work.

That… was absolutely gorgeous. I think the fear of growing up is something we can all relate to, especially those of us who are just out of high school and about to start this next big chapter in our lives (for me, that being moving to the UK to study animation at university). I know that for myself, I definitely don’t want to grow up, as I’ve always cherished being a kid, and I never want that to end. But the way you explored that fear of change and growing up is so beautiful. How change is always happening, and while we may be resistant to it at first, we get used to it, learn to love the new, and it becomes our new normal, and something we can enjoy. I love that you seemed to take inspiration from your own experience with this film, it makes it that much more special and emotional. This hit me… I got into my dream school… I’m going to do what I love… I get the thing I always wanted.. and I’m terrified. I leave my room, my family, my state… everything. I’ve lived in the same place for 8 years, and the same city for my whole life. And I’m going somewhere else, into a future that is completely unknown. And I’m so scared I made a mistake. I could have gone to one of the top ten schools in the world, but I chose to chase a dream. And that’s terrifying to do. So so so terrifying. My college is still good, don’t get me wrong. But art schools are never as internationally recognized.

I grew up homeschooled. I didn’t see friends everyday and my relationships weren’t as strong there weren’t as many inside jokes or shared experiences as there could have been. But I suppose it’s kind of a blessing when I leave it won’t hurt as much. Grad of 2024 as of May 4th I am scared but I know “summers just beginning” my new will become normal and that part of my life will become a memory just like every time before. thank you for making this. I'm in my last year of secondary school, my finals are just in a few days. I've come to this realization last year and I've been dreading growing up ever since. one part of me doesn't want to proceed, Im terrified of the future, and the other part of me doesn't want this to end because I feel like I haven't lived it. I've missed out on my childhood. I never had friends to hang out with at school, I stopped going to field trips since I was 8, I even stopped attending school completely since primary (elementary) school because I was never able to socialize and get along with people. it didn't bother me then, the loneliness didnt upset me, and it still doesnt, im mostly terrified of the fact that i missed out on what people claim to be the best years of your life. im turning 18 in a few months but i feel like im still 11-12, still waiting to become a teenager and no longer be a child, because i never got to experience what its like to be a teenager. when in reality, im in my late teens and soon enough, becoming an adult. its incredibly childish but im jealous of people who are younger than me. even if by just a year. im jealous of 13 year olds who still have their entire teenage years to experience being a teenager. i wish i could go back and make up for this lost time. i feel like i havent mentally matured enough to match my actual age, my social skills are extremely poor and it feels pathetic. im not ready to enter the next chapter. i dont know how im going to do this when im so behind. i never prepared for this because i never thought id get here.

Probably no one is going to read this, but I feel the exact same. I’m class of 2027 though so there’s still a few years to come before I graduate. Still, I’ve attended graduation every year since 7th grade, because I’m in band and the band always plays at graduation. I watched the 8th graders graduate middle school when I was in 7th grade, then I graduated in 8th grade, and this year, as a freshman, I watched all the seniors graduate high school. I saw everyone throw their caps into the air, said goodbye to some people for the last time, then it was all over. I get so apprehensive, especially about my future, mostly because that’s going to be me one day and I have no idea what I’m doing, and time is going by way too fast

Honestly, the whole point of high school is to experiment. Use those few years to find out who you are and what you value. You shouldn’t have everything sorted out as a freshman, in fact as a junior in high school myself I still have a lot to learn and areas to improve. My advice? Commit to the important things. Like a study planner for example, or a supportive good of friends. Maturing is all about getting out of your comfort zone. At the end of the day, you’ll learn something more about yourself for the better.

Just had final day of high school 2 days ago... I'm happy for it to be over but yeah, I can see a lot of other classmates struggling like this right now. It's a somber feeling when I dwell on nostalgia of school, but I know my classmates or going to become great people. My bio teacher told us happiness is a choice. Sometimes it can be hard yes, but when you train yourself to look at the positives of now its hard to look back. Stay in contact with each other. Laugh about the fun times. Don't let it hold you back because you have such a future ahead of you! I'm just as much scared as I am excited, but that's how adventures start right?

I relate so much to this, because I'm about to move up(In my country we have senior high school). Moving up is kinda like graduating but not exactly. So that requires me to go to a different school, since my school only offers till g10. Change is scary, it really is. But this animation of you shows me that even if its scary. You just have to do it. Change is a beautiful thing to happen, and you just have to embrace it to love it. Anyways this is such a masterpiece!! 💗

I graduated on the 24th of June and I’m still trying to process that I’m no longer a “kid” and I have no idea what I’m going to do with myself, I didn’t apply to any colleges and I I’m not planning to join the military right now, I don’t even have a job or anything. I’m just depressed because I WISHED I used my time more wisely in high school like joining a club or doing a sport instead of just waiting for the day to end so I could go home to play video games and mindlessly scroll on my phone. I also didn’t make friends my four years there because I was too socially anxious to talk to anyone, I was a little more talkative my senior year though. It was just a month ago that I was walking down the halls going to my first period English class, and now I’m trying to hold back the tears of knowing that it’s all really over and the kids I went to school with (some as far back as elementary) I will never see again. But if I’m being honest I was very stressed and depressed during high school and the only reason why I’m sad that it ended was because I didn’t make the most of it and I can’t go back and change anything. To end this post on a lighter note I did take more chances during my senior year and I went to prom and even attended some school activities, and right now I’m going through the process of enrolling into a community college where I may pursue a BA in psychology, however as a kid I was always fascinated with cartoons and animation as a whole so I want to work to pursue that in my free time. I just want to thank whoever took the time to read my post, thank you for reading to the end and have a fine rest of your day 🙏

Dude this hits so hard. I’m in my junior year of high school right now, so much is changing and has been for a while. I’m learning to drive, I’m learning to love again with my second girlfriend after a VERY rough first breakup, I’m contemplating what I want to do with my life in the future and if animation is the path destined for me, etc. I’m sgonna be watching this often to remind myself that yeah, it’s hard to go through the change, but I’ve done it before, and I’ve grown so much into a person that I love because of it. Thank you for making this video and all your other content, you’re amazing ✌️
