Synopsis:

Dear lord the comments have you actually watched the same show as me. He was tricked into believing she had killed his beloved wife and yes what he did was cruel but have any of you watched and listened to what he was put through himself by his own father. This show is indeed hard to watch sometimes but for me this shows me just how cruel the Chinese emperors could be. They want sons to carry on their name but at the same time are terrified and jealous of them. His father was a despicable hateful man. If you want a happy ending you are not going to get one. That is the beauty of this because normally everything is forgiven so the show ends on a rose coloured scene but this one does not. Brilliant acting bringing out an interesting even though sad and harsh and extremely difficult to watch story in places. Luo Jin is excellent in this drama. He has the great presence that makes a true actor, he draws you into his world and before you know it, you are crying with him or rejoicing with him whenever he lands a win. You feel his pain the scene of his birthday made me cry so badly I had to stop watching it for a few days. His every move his little nuances to portray this gentle soul because that is what he was but was turned into this ruthless evil man just to survive but it's not who he was. The setting, showcased a cold palace with conniving manipulative members of the palace any and all waiting with daggers to unearth the man on the throne. The clothing was simple not the great big hair displays or cloaks of gold. The details of tradition are amazing. All the actors were just superb, the king- we may or may not like his character but his acting was excellent. The heroine, the crown princes teacher, even Li Baizhou exhibited and portrayed excellent acting. I was hoping so much for a happier ending though as the hero and heroine went through so much. Yet at the same time I was glad that it ends the way it did. To much damage had been done to them both let's hope that reincarnation brings them back together for happier times. One of the best Chinese drama's by far. I hope they make more like this drama! A DEFINITE MUST WATCH.

Am I the only one distracted by her painted nails? It totally pulls me out of historic dramas to see modern nail polish on the womens’ fingernails. 🤦🏻‍♀️

You think they can paint red walls and things and didn't have nail polish 💅 then? 😂 aren't you Westerners a bit arrogant? There's ways in old days we stained nails.. takes a long time& longer than just putting on nail polish today.. but it can be a light red-orange tone like her nails here.. look again.. just try cutting tumeric you get yellow stains for a day or so. Now if you add red flowers juice paste with it or red stones grounded into powder paste, or mud red, it's possible to become a but orange-red. She's supposed to be pretty for princes' pleasure to look, so nails aren't off for consideration if she is given a way to color nails. Ofc it may not be healthy formula, stones can & may contain lead & stuffs to make it stick, but Hell! Chinese led the world in most everything from fireworks, silk trade, wooden clogs, tinted makeup 💄 etc. and some of US govt set ups systems are based on Qing Dynasty salary system. You have 3 branches system but you still have one leading head branch, like Royalties within US govt that given huge powers over other 2, as many Congress members exempted themselves from the laws they passed onto people.

You would be right to be distracted under normal circumstances but her nail polish was part of the story. The Princess (her boss) dyed Gu’s nails for fun. She even said Gu could return the favor in the future. That was why Gu had her nails polished.
