The year was 1985 - Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union, Phil Collins released No Jacket Required, and the Pop-Tart had an utter monopoly on the heat-and-eat breakfast pastry market. Luckily, a man known only as Mr. Wieners created a frozen innovation, the so-called Toaster Strudel: a flakier, fruitier, frostier response to its shelf-stable contemporary. It would go on to partially fund a clique of particularly unkind young women, portrayed in the 2004 biopic “Mean Girls”. Anyway, today we’re making homemade toaster strudels.

She was just on Seth Meyers' late night show talking about a Mean Girls reboot, and she mentioned this exactly. They were excited about how even 20 years later the original doesn't feel dated thanks to avoiding current slang of the time. BetterHelp only reminds me of when I sought help during one of my lowest points in life. Havin to click a button that said "I don't need help." Because I couldn't afford it leaves a special ball of hate in my chest. After hearing the controversies afterward, maybe I dodged a bullet.

I'm glad to see other comments about the problems with BetterHelp, but I still have to throw my weight behind the issue, too. Not only does BetterHelp pair LGBT clients with conversion therapists and religious abuse survivors with Christian therapists in direct contradiction with both their desires and best interests, they also have gone on record justifying the sale of session transcripts by saying that they're a tech company, not a healthcare company, and so have no obligation to uphold patient confidentiality.

Toaster Strudel in the microwave for 12 seconds before tossing them in the toaster is the best way to make them. The microwave takes the edge off throughout while the toaster crisps everything up to perfection while getting the filling to just slightly short of molten, mouth melting hot. Any shorter than 12 seconds and the filling is still cold/frozen. Any longer than 12 seconds and the pastry goes soggy and gross. Two rounds through the toaster will burn the pastry to an inedible state. So the only way to eat Toaster Strudel is to microwave first and then toast.

I love your content, Babish, but could you look deeper into your sponsors please? BetterHelp is known to be incredibly sketchy and even sometimes dangerous to their consumers. From the fact that up until recently their "therapists" weren't actually licensed, to selling private and sensitive health data to ad agencies, and mostly getting away with it due to not technically falling under HIPAA laws since their therapists weren't licensed... They're just a really, really bad company to be supporting with your content and sponsorships. ♥

If you're sticking with the store-bought, and you have a Tovala oven, Toaster Strudel may be the only thing that cooks perfectly just by scanning the UPC. Everything else we just treat it like an overpriced toaster oven, but it works magic with Toaster Strudel.

Genuinely curious, what's the point of blanching the basil if you're just going to boil it with the strawberries anyway? Wouldn't it be best to drop it in right before switching off the heat?

I hadn't heard of sumac as a seasoning before this video, and I'm fascinated yet dubious. Since I was about 5, I've only known sumac as "one of the two plants I am allergic to" XD That said, your strudels looks and sound amazingly delicious. May have to try making some of my own!

Dang, that looks great! I've always been a bit confused about strawberry and basil. It's been popping up in alcoholic beverages at my store lately. The few applications I've had it in, the basil overwhelmed the strawberry and tasted a little too savory for my preference. Out of curiosity, is this a relatively recent combo, or has it been around a while?
