Jocelyn is phenomenal, so I want to clear something up: this is not acting, theatre, performance, or dramatics. This is PUBLIC SPEAKING! No one listens, learns, and gains from any speaker who is not willing to step out of his/her comfort zone, connect with the audience, and instill an environment that permits sharing between audience and speaker. To do that, you need to engage your body language, stage, voice, hands, etc. Remember that the goal is not to sound good, but for the listener to engage with and receive the message, and to change from it. Hence, successful and effective 21st century public speaking may require (what may look like to be) elements of dramatics and performance. That's ok. Anything to achieve the responsibility and mandate of the public speaker. Jocelyn, and many other speakers at this competition like Anastarcia Palacios, did just that!!!!

So sorry, but I wholeheartedly disagree with this assessment. Imagine a president, or MLK doing something like this. They would not have gone far. Public speaking isn't about stepping out of one's comfort zone, but just a technique some need to develop the confidence to deliver a speech. There are countless natural and confident speakers who don't need to step out of their comfort zones to speak well. This is one of the most disappointing World Championship wins in recent years

Kudos to you for explaining why we Toastmasters do histrionics as much as a tool to engage audience as sending resounding message across. Indeed, it works emphatically. Those who pull their faces awkwardly may take little while to understand the rationale behind this. Though I have been away from Toastmasters for almost 3 years, but would prefer to join it again.

Dhananjaya, Lance Miller and the 2009 Champion are examples of truly great speakers with great scripts and great delivery

I am not someone who is usually very invested in triathlons and many physical sports I exercise but I am not as motivated or involved as other's in the athletics field's and yet even still this speech got me so invested in her story and the process of growing and building up to doing something. Her ability to express her emotions with body language and her voice effortlessly is extremely impressive! I found a great connection to this story even though I was only 2 minutes in!

“1st place? HOW?” I thought when I first watched her at the WC HOWEVER I now GET IT! She had all the ingredients for a World class speech: 1 core story, humor, sprinkling the title in 5-6 times, ENERGY, fun, awesome organization including a relatable 70 second call to action conclusion. Also, she kept it conversational and simple yet packed with nuggets of wisdom. My only suggestion would to PAUSE longer after a few key questions and to SLOW DOWN with her conclusion. Fantastic speech! A well deserved 1st place.

Actually, there are now (6) women TM International Speech Contest Champions 🌞🎉 1977 champion Evelyn Jane Burgay is the first woman to win the title. 1985 champion Marie C. Pyne is the first European (Ireland) to win the title. 2008, Lashunda Rundles became the first African American woman to ever win the title of World Champion of Public Speaking. She also was the first woman to win in almost two decades. In 2018, Ramona J. Smith became the second African American woman to win, it had been a decade since a woman took the title. 2021 Verity Price (South Africa) became the 6th woman to ever win the international speech contest, and the first speaker in history to win from Africa. 2023 Jocelyn Tyson

She did a good job with the speech, for sure. Lot of energy, vocal variety, body language, blah blah blah. It is just that I agree with others here that this is getting more and more theater each year for TM. It is sad how judges pick someone who is all about acting, moving around, swinging their bodies left and right, blah blah blah… (think one year it was someone with a boxing ring) over speeches that really have great depth, intelligent, contain elements of words, smart humors, and really keep your audiences on the edge of their seats guessing what is next. This story- I can kind of tell where she was going and there is nothing suspenseful or exciting about. The “great” championship speech that TM had was at least several years ago. The recents aren’t that unique or inspiring.

As a fellow toastmaster, I understand very well why she won first place. Great story, wonderful voice techniques (using the right variations of pitch, volume, pacing, tone), appropriate body language, building up to a classical motivational ending. However, looking at this from a European perspective, this is more of a great theatrical performance than it is a speech. I say this not to criticize her personally, but to point out the fact that in European TM-clubs, the speeches are much more toned town. We give speeches that we could also give during a company meeting. We look at it from a functional perspective, how we want to apply our TM skills in professional life. A speech like this would be considered 'over the top'. Maybe that is why Europeans never win the TM World Championship? Just asking.

I have been in TM competitions in the US for quite a few years and I had a speech where I literally dancing and jumping around the stage and singing - that speech got me to the district level. Then the last few years I toned down my contest speech, and I couldn’t even get through division or even area contest. FYI: judges are not trained and the guideline provided is all too focused on (excessive) body gesture and vocal variety - in other word, if you have less body movement or not screaming and acting emotionally dramatic, you are going to get less points than someone who is more on the scoring sheet. Judges here at least in the area through district levels are mostly people who serve as directors/leaders, some of them never even competed in a contest themselves. They judge people based on their own personal feeling and the experience (entertaining value) they get from the speaker. To tell you a true story as an example, many years ago. I went to an Area Contest and the judges gave a person who obviously should be LAST place the FIRST place. Why? Because they sympathize the person because he was blind… he had no eye contact (obviously), no vocal variety, the speech organization was nothing amazing… yet he got first place. What a joke! TM has absolutely no quality control and fairness in their contest judging. They eliminated lot of great speakers who probably have really great stories and speeches than this one… just unfortunately we don’t get to see those speeches ever.

Because it’s an examination of demonstrating the parts on the judges ballot. Bigger voices, bigger gestures, more stage movement, bigger numbers on the ballot. No one needs a ballot to know what speech they preferred. I’d get rid of the ballot sheet and just right a simple purpose line. Evaluation contest, humorous speech contest and table topics are the same. None have a clear purpose and each have an artificial ballot sheet so results are all over the place sometimes.

Thumbnail Size: Consider optimizing your designs for smaller mobile screens, where most viewers see them (resize your designs to 150 pixels height or even smaller, and evaluate the content clarity then). 2. Font Clarity: Ensure fonts are easily readable on both small and large screens and there is not too much text. 3. Simplicity: Simplify thumbnails to grab viewer's attention in a split second. It's better to have one element that grabs attention than to have a busy image that will be scrolled by. These tweaks can boost Toastmasters' visibility on KZbin and attract audiences that do not know our organization yet. They can easily be made using free tools like Canva (where you even find free thumbnail templates).

What would you pay to hear that? And will it change your life? In the TM world that’s what brilliant looks like. Outside TM, not so much. Not to take anything away from Jocelyn, she gave what the judges are looking for as each winner does each year. But this is a contest that has no purpose, judges don’t know if it should be educational, informational, entertaining, motivating, so it becomes an examination of exaggerating each part of the judges ballot so voice, actions, content, stage use are all exaggerated while trying to guess at what they need. TM, how about creating a line like - the purpose of this contest is to…..? That way all contestants and judges know what they are trying to achieve. Right let’s go learn backstroke, buy a bike and get some running shoes. I’m sure I can do this :)
