Setting up QoS on my ER4 substantially decreased my latency. My speeds were great, but I had excessive latency in both ping times in games, and loading of websites. When I say excessive, I have 600mpbs down, and I was waiting 5-10 seconds for some websites to load. My network is on an unmanaged switch, with a Ubiquity wireless access point. I'm the only wired connection on the network. After setting up the QoS smart queue, websites load instantaneously, and my ping times in games have gone from 300ms to 20ms. My wired PC bandwidth is now a solid 380mbps but it's obviously being managed much more efficiently. So definitely a must have for setting up these routers.

Fantastic video, you did a great job of explaining QoS. Can I ask for some advice, when I'm gaming from my PC, I'm noticing ping spikes when my wife starts streaming 4k from her TV. The ping spikes only happen when streaming 4k, not HD. When I check the bandwidth usage it's clear the TV is maxing out our 100mb connection for short bursts at a time. I have the Edge router and used the basic queues to enable fqcodel on the entire network, but it didn't stop the ping spikes, I have checked if the basic queue is working properly because buffer bloat disappears with the basic queue enabled. So how do limit the bandwidth of the TV but also make sure I'm not getting buffer bloat whilst gaming. I also have kids that stream on their devices. Thanks.
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
There are some situations where the Edgerouter doesn't do exactly what you would expect. The way you have it configured should eliminate the ping spikes, but if you are still getting them you might just want to hard-cap the TV. I would create a basic queue rule for the TV and just limit it to 50% of the total bandwidth. This way, it will never take more than that.

Great video :) But one question/thougt. Which settings should you use ? Enable offloading to get a little better performance OR start using/try configuring the QoS to get better speed. It seems to me that you need to choose? Have a great day!
@ToastyAnswers8 ай бұрын
With this device, you typically need to choose one or the other. My general rule is if your connection is above 100Mbps, then just enable offloading and call it a day. If it is less, then QoS could be a good route. Typically, I don't look at QoS unless I'm already having problems with network congestion. Otherwise, offloading it is.

Can you recreate the smart queue in the advaced queue and then tweak it?

PFIFO stands for PIORITY FIFO not PACKET. It bases its selection of SFQ "round robins" to priority packets first. What the default priority is i have never been able to find. It could be they are all the same priority if nothing is explicitly set, in which case it would function as a FIFO anyways.

what queue rule do you come up with for online games, I play on xbox and I have high buffering when downloading...
@ToastyAnswers Жыл бұрын
I don't really have a specific rule for gaming. I just use the default smart-queue which should balance the bandwidth between various "connections". The problem with downloads is that some use a disproportionate amount of "connections" which will overwhelm the QoS (Torrents especially). If I have a machine that tends to hog the bandwidth, I'll just do a strict bandwidth limitation for that device so it doesn't have the ability to max out the connection.

First of all, really love your Edgerouter videos, they are a huge help. Secondly, I currently get 400 Down and 20 Up from my ISP. With those speeds, should I prioritize Smart Queue or Hardware Offloading? My connection is mainly used for KZbin/KZbinTV streaming and online gaming on 1 PC.
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would go with hardware offloading unless you are experiencing too high latency or other connection issues. Enabling QoS on your connection would seriously hinder your overall throughput (at least for download).

Hi, i have edgerouter x with firmware 2.09. I use wan 1 and wan 2. Wan 2 is starlink. Normal speed in wan 2 is 200mbit of download and 20 of upload. With my ubiquiti router the speed came limited to 60/70 mbit in download, why ? I have enabled/disabled ipsec and hwnat but the problem is always the same. Thanks a lot for the help.

Great video! I have a weird problem with my ER X 5 port. I use "delete traffic-control" to increase my speed from 100 to 400. But it automatically reset the traffic-control at speeds go down to 100 again. Do you know why?
@ToastyAnswers Жыл бұрын
Your Edgerouter isn't managed by UNMS (UISP) by chance? There are some settings there which can override the local traffic policies. If not, then I'm not sure why it would be changing back unless you are not committing AND saving the configuration.

Hi, Just wondering, can Ubiquiti UISP EdgeRouter 12 support 1gb speeds with smart queue ? If not, what is the model of edge router that can support 1gb smart queue ? Thanks
@ToastyAnswers14 күн бұрын
Nope, as far as I know there isn't an Edgerouter model that will support this. The Edgerouter Infinity PROBABLY would, but that's an $1800 router and definitely isn't in the price range for home use. That's also a device I've never personally worked with so I have no idea what the real world performance data would be. Check out my speedtest videos for a bit more of what throughput looks like across multiple different devices with smart queue enabled. The QoS functionality causes the biggest performance hit by far across these type of devices.

I wouldn't enable QoS for anything above 200Mbps personally. Unless you're having serious QoS issues.

more Info on off loading ? My Er-4 should I offload or not.??.want Speed but have L2switches for cameras
@ToastyAnswers2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on your total internet speed. If you enable QoS and your total speed takes a significant hit, then it might not be able to keep up. The ER-4 shouldn't affect anything with your camera network unless they are crossing between different subnets.

Could you please suggest nice router to reduce bufferbloat for 1 gb connection?
@ToastyAnswers Жыл бұрын
None of the Edge routers are going to keep up with 1Gbps while running QoS for buffer bloat. You'd probably need to look at a Dream Machine Pro or another type of device altogether. However, you may have other issues if you are having issues with buffer bloat on a connection of that speed.

Hi, I have huge desync in online games even tho my ping is low all the time, it feels "laggy" and delayed even with low ping, do you think this coud be caused by poor QOS on ISP side?
@ToastyAnswers14 күн бұрын
That is a possibility, but there are a ton of factors that could be in play here.. For example... What kind of internet connection do you have? (Fiber, cable, Satellite, etc...) Are you gaming on Wireless or wired? What is your total connection bandwidth? Do you have a bunch of other devices using the internet at the same time? Bufferbloat is real, and the Edgerouter can help assist with that with something like "smart-queue", but it's a bit uncommon now days since internet connections have vastly improved in overall bandwidth. I'm not saying it isn't still an issue, but it just isn't as prevalent as it used to be and diagnosing intermittent "lag" is always a pain. There are so many variables.

I'm still getting bufferbloat and packet loss with SQM enabled on my Edgerouter 12. Is it possible it's a Modem problem?
@ToastyAnswers Жыл бұрын
It is possible, but there are a ton of variables in the buffer-bloat game. It could be the Edgerouter settings not matching the connection properly, the modem having too large a buffer, or any of the upstream ISP devices being overload or not configured to handle congestion properly. Also, the communication medium can play a big part on how bad bufferbloat hits your specific connection (Cable, DSL, Fiber, Metro Eth...etc.)

Is there a way to limit bandwidth with hardware offloading?
@ToastyAnswers Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, there is not. Bandwidth limiting requires QoS to be enabled, which is not compatible with hardware offloading (Enabling bandwidth limit via QoS automatically disables offloading).
