Burley has been a C&D staple for years; in fact, many of our most popular mixtures focus on showcasing the nuances of the low-sugar-content leaf. Given all that, you might think we blend with several different grades of Burley. Truth is, we use only two -- one grade of white Burley and one grade of dark Burley -- for everything in our product line calling for the air-cured leaf, including mixtures from G.L. Pease, Two Friends, and Captain Earle's. Tune in as our Head Blender Jeremy Reeves talks a little more about these two grades, explains the differences between them, and offers an inside look into our selection process. Burley lovers, this one's for you.

Fascinating! Oh how I am salivating just watching this! I reside in the UK and cannot get hold of a decent "old fashioned" burley but have been fortunate enough to have tried "Old Joe Krantz", which I loved, and also some "Big 'n' Burley" which I absolutely adored! Yum!

Top marks, Jeremy. Very informative. I only wish there were more pipe tobacco videos like this one. I realize that Semois tobacco is unique, but it is air-cured, and does have the character of burley. Do you have any ideas on a way to combine the various burley types to mimic Semois leaf ? I imagine the way to get that mild cigar note of Semois is to use a little dark burley. Semois has a fantastic room note: nut-like with a tiny bit of spice similar to Dutch cigars, rather than the more typical heavy cigar note.

Thanks Jeremy I've now tried 3 of your blends and enjoy them all. I would think the same batches of tobacco would give consistency in the flavor which I've noticed every product has your trademark "flavor". I like the higher nicotine content being a nic fiend I don't have to inhale and still get a buzz. Keep up the informative videos.

So the difference in white and dark burley isn’t necessarily the varietal/ seed but rather leaf position for different qualities the plant gives its leaves as well as the fermentation process afterwards. Does white burley move towards the properties of dark leaf with aging (I understood that “composting” them is basically speeding up a natural process)? Let’s say you’ve got a big stash of white burley, after some 3-5 years of storage the leaf turns out with more flavor and or nicotine?

Are those clay pipes? What type of pipes are those and would you say they are the best pipes to use while blending and tasting before the finished product is completed and used in a specific, permanent pupe of choice?

I’m curious about Jeremy using a clay pipe in these talks. Is there a specific reason for choosing a clay in these circumstances? I enjoy the discussions and I smoke many of his blends.

So is the dark Burley a different varietal as the white as well or is it just stalk position and later harvest time?

N Sill I find the Haunted Bookshop to be not too heavy. Same with Redburn. Old Joe gets an extra kick from the high Perique content. If you wanna dabble with burley but don’t want too much nicotine some OTC blends like Walter Raleigh it Prince Albert may be good.
