Angelina & Toby worked together 2 years ago & they co-wrote & recorded 8 songs, Bad Valentine being one of them. But. none of them made it on her latest EP, "Old Enough," & Toby was devastated since he thought they were some of his best work. They didn't speak for a couple of years, but recently they started working together again when he asked her to sing a reimagination of his original song, If I Were A Boy, which he co-wrote with BC Jean. She first recorded it, but her record label didn't want to include it on her album. So Toby played it for Beyonce & the rest is history. Toby is reimagining many of his former hit songs that he co-wrote for other artists in an album called "Piano Diaries." Angelina agreed to sing If I Were A Boy & they killed it in several different versions (live, studio, partly acapella). Bad Valentine was recently released on Toby's Record Label & is presumably, the 1st of the 8 songs they have written & recorded, but haven't released yet. It also has a few versions, but this jazzy one is my favorite, by far.

Toci, we have noted how often Angelina takes a cover and reimagines it as the song "was meant to be" . . . we never imagined that she would do the same for one of her originals just a few weeks after its release! 🤯🤩😪

That's because we knew it would be impossible for anyone to cover the first version and make it sound better than the original. Some reactors and comments on reactor channels actually said that. I guess we all forgot Angelina was still out there. We need to be really specific and totally qualify any such pronouncements. Like, nobody could cover this song and make it better, except Angelina Jordan. 😊😊

You said near the beginning of this that you didn’t know which version you liked better. I had similar thoughts, but then I understood that you don’t have to choose. These are different songs. Different tempo, different style, different attitude, different vibe. In the live jazz club version, AJ has a harder edge: it’s not my fault…I warned you. Here, the jazzy lyrics might be the same, but her attitude is definitely softer, more nostalgic, more understanding. And the vocals on both are insanely good. You can love them both without trying to figure out if one is better.

I wouldn't tell anyone which one they should love the most BUT, if you ask me (🙂) this jazzy version, if the distribution is right on, could be a number one hit in several Countries it's that good. Angelina and Toby are working well together and Toby knows exactly what fits Angelina perfectly. As we know, she has original music on the shelf and if she shows it to Toby he might incorporate some of his ideas to it and make some beautiful music with her.

Toby Gad is definitely not a jazz pianist 😊 more a pop/ classic arranger… but this balllad version is harmonically richer Than the pop version. All the jazzy feeling come for AJ

I think she first scatted on Labrinth's Mount Everest at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival 2022, when she surprised the crowd by opening the concert with it.
