My husband went to Iraq twice and lost 4 soldiers. 1 was his best friend. He has a Purple Heart from the the invasion. His battalion was the one that caught sadam. He was there pulling guard while the others went in. So I know the meaning of Memorial Day. It’s close to my heart. So thank you to those whose paid the ultimate sacrifice.

I still cry (bawl) when I hear this song, my heart breaks remembering what we went through as a country and what’s happening NOW, makes me angry, more than anything this is a disgrace to EVERY service member that served and sacrificed.

I was on instructor duty at a Navy school in Upstate NY when Toby Keith came to the local amphitheater. Right before playing this song, he was speaking to the crowd and said "So I understand this is a Navy town?" and the crowd blew up. Then he continued on "and there's an airbase up the road?" More cheers. While singing, he changed up each verse "American Soldier, American Sailor, American Airman, American Marine." It was absolutely fantastic.

GREAT REACTION!! Im a Army Vet who has been deployed 5 times that = over 6 years. The only time i didnt volunteer to go in harms way is when we went to Saudi to prep to invade Iraq 03. After the first time . I continuously kept volunteering to go back. I knew my job and the area like the back of my hand. i was scared for somebody who relieved us to not be as experienced. And i didnt want anything to happen to any of my brothers and sisters. I also have 5 sisters. So i wanted to do all i can to prevent them from having to go. Once i found out i was going to be a dad. I finally took a medical retirement that they were offering me for years. As i had been shot, stabbed, and blown up with shrapnel in my head. 3 injuries outta 5 major war deployments. not good odds. But i was lucky! I love everybody ! But more so, the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice! you are my motivation everyday to be the best human and dad i can be! You will never be forgotten! My son was a senior in high school when 9/11 happened. Growing up, he'd always tell me he wanted to be something special in the Army. I brought every man I knew who had been in the service to our house, after he graduated from high school, to convince him to wait a few years before going in. I reminded him that his cousin got a full ride scholarship as a pitcher and went in giving his all. And that's where he wrecked his shoulder. He regretted not red shirting himself for 2 years. Males develop until they're 25. He waited 2 years. Married his high school sweetheart and left for boot camp the next morning. They're still married. He's still in the Army and I have 3 gorgeous grands. His wife and I cried when we went to his boot camp graduation listening to this song. Freedom don't come free.

I took part in the invasion of Panama Desert Storm and I was in Bosnia twice. Leaving home to deploy is always hard on the Family your wife is an adult she can comprehend the reason why you must leave. The children are too young they don't understand why dad must leave and is not coming home in the evening. I was a lucky one by The Fortunes of God I was always able to return home. I had nightmares nearly every single night where I watched my son die. I would wake up screaming his name. The photo of me hugging him upon his return was and will always be my most treasured photo. I will confess, I broke down in my boys arms, he hugged me tighter and said "Mom, I really missed you" and kissed my cheek. I can imagine that is the closest I will get to heaven without actually dying. God bless those mothers that didn't get to hug their soldiers again, my heart bleeds for each and every one of them, truly it does. ❤

I appreciate the shot of the boy watching his father go because it reminds me of my own babies at about the same age saying goodbye to their dad. My children were so brave, at an age I would never have otherwise asked them to be. I put this John Milton quote on the wall where they could see it every day: “They also serve who only stand and wait”.

I wrote to Toby Keith right after I heard this the first time after I quit crying. I told him it was like he was sitting in my living room writing this. Every single word was our family at that time. Hubby was overseas at the time. I still cry every time I hear it. This time is no different. I'm gonna miss him. He's a legend.

My husband served 20 years in the Navy, 14 of which we were married. I supported him 100%. The year we married May 2nd and he flew back around the 18th and we didn’t see each other until January 30 of the next year. That year he was in and out of sea constantly. The next year he was gone or had duty 284 days but we managed to have twins. He had shore duty for the next 3 years but then it was back to sea. Heck I potty trained the kids while he was gone and the day after he came home he was looking for diapers! You look so forward to them retiring and then you both realize how you miss it. He retired in 2000 and sometimes it feels so close but so far away. He’s my hero, my American Sailor.

I told my girl that she was free and left for my first of 3 consecutive combat tours in Vietnam. When I got home I was broken in many ways. She was still there and she helped fix me. We have a great daughter and superb grand daughter. We celebrated our 50th anniversary this year. I always felt that I was living for all of my buddies that I lost over there. I felt I owed it to them to live my life to the fullest. I think I did but honestly I still feel guilt.

I’m the granddaughter, daughter, sister, wife, niece, cousin and now mom of veterans and active duty folks. My direct family has fought in every American war from the French and Indian on down, a lot of blood, sweat and tears have been shed, by the vets and those who support them at home. It’s an incredible amount of sacrifice, the pay is…not much. They really don’t do it for the money, they do it for the love of this great country, the ideals it was founded on, that we’re all created equal, that we have inherent rights no government can grant or take away, that we should fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. It’s about being a part of something bigger than yourself, because some things truly are worth dying for. One of my fave quotes: “We sleep peacefully in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would cause us harm”. George Orwell

I am a proud Army Brat and also the wife of a husband that served in the Marines. I think some of the hardest things was watching my dad leave over the years. The elation when he would get home is something I can't begin to express. RIP daddy and know I am so proud of you.

I grew up a Navy brat. My Dad served in the Navy for nearly 30 yrs and there were times when he had to go out to sea for a period of time. I remember us being there waiting for him on the base dock when his ship would come into the dock when they came home. A cpl times we lived overseas when he was stationed over there like in Sicily, Italy, etc. but he still had to be away out to sea , sometimes weeks at a time. He served through the Vietnam era giving backup for the soldiers when needed. My Dad was a torpedoman. He also had 4 brothers who also served in the Navy, the oldest brother being the only one besides my Dad who was a lifer too in the Navy. My Uncle Charles was stationed on the USS Forestall when it caught fire and survived it. My uncle did 2 tours during Vietnam to keep the rest of his younger brothers from having to go, so they stayed on their respective ships and served from sea. So, yes, not only the servicemen/women serve to protect our country and freedom, all their families did their part too. Most especially the spouses.

My father served as a gunner on a tank in WWII. These songs by Toby Keith and Trace Adkins really tug at my heart-strings. I am so proud of and grate to those that serve and have served in the past. God Bless them and God Bless America.

As a fifth generation child of US Army soldiers, this song is so special to me. I missed birthdays, Christmases and special-to-a-kid events with my Dad because he was on active duty (Korea and two Nam tours). Every time he left I knew, even as a kid, that it might be the last time we ever saw him alive. But I knew he was out there fighting oppression. Our troops are beyond gratitude. We owe them EVERYTHING!! Freedom is not free. Both the soldiers and their families pay for it, our soldiers all too often pay the ultimate price. May God bless and keep them in Heaven and on Earth where they still uphold the ideal of freedom for everyone everywhere.

During the Gulf War me and my husband were both in the military . I was out to sea on the USS Shenandoah and my husband was going to be sent with the First Marine’s to the Gulf . We had a 3 year old . We managed this but at the time many people I knew both parents had to go. That is a sacrifice few know about. Although me and my husband joined the military our daughter didn’t. I got out to care for her my husband was medically discharged and died for liver failure at 55 because of his service he got hepatitis C.

I saw Toby in concert five times. Every time, the last two songs he sang were American Soldier and Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue. He always had veterans and military members and dependents on stage for both songs. A true American patriot. He is sorely missed. I think you would really like Chris Ledoux as well. He was the 1976 bare-back bronc champ at National Finals Rodeo and would sell his music out of his car at the rodeos. He was "discovered" by Garth Brooks. Another one gone too soon. I recommend This Cowboy's Hat as a first listen.

My husband did three deployments to Iraq. We missed him and it was always the roughest time but we love him and support him and honored him being a soldier. He is retired now and we are so blessed that he came back to us safely. We make sure we spend all the time we missed just hanging out with him! He taught us more about patriotism than any school book ever did! Salute to all the American soldiers. Sadly We lost beautiful, wonderful friends…and we thank them everyday as we mis them.
