"I can only hope, sir." Probably one of the best line from Toby in the series.

Worst job in the world. Bartlett having to pretend he isn’t insanely proud of him when he is because of the role of the office.

As the little Sister of a dozen adopted big Brothers who died because of Vietnam, I am always reduced to hysterical tears when this clip plays. What a waste of undeveloped talent. I always imagine what my big Brothers could have achieved for society had they lived beyond 20 years old. Rest In Peace, My Dear Brothers. You ARE Remembered!

Up until 4:30, best West Wing episode ever. I always get a lump in my throat. My son was a Marine, OEF 1/7.

Calling out Bartlet for not disclosing the MS will always be not only Toby's finest moment, but the finest moment in the entire series ("Ran into the fire" is a close second). The reason why is because Toby does it ALONE, in the Oval Office, against two of the only people who are smarter than him, one of whom is the PRESIDENT, and he still emerges victorious.
@dee_dee_placeАй бұрын
Exactly! Toby's services were always needed because he was the voice of morality, of integrity, even when it went against the grain. He is who I call a person of character & he will always have my complete respect.

That and Bartlett tearing the Christian "Dr" apart are my 2 favourite big moments in the show. Richard Schiff's ability to be very still while projecting almost overwhelming emotion is mesmerising.

Overlaying The Little Drummer Boy over the funeral of a homeless vet is perfection. Nobody writes and produces like this anymore.

The fact that the White House staff lined up in formation during its playing & the funeral was not lost on me. If you didn't notice it, replay the clip, Charlie was the only one who didn't line up in formation & I figured that was because of his young age. In his lifetime, the US was not an active participant in a war.

Including the sequence about the Mendoza confirmation seemed out of place. Hardly any Toby in it. Even his scene at the police station convincing Mendoza to leave was more significant. Toby's funniest line was when Sam was explaining how he "accidentally" slept with a call girl and Toby asks, "You accidentally slept with a call girl? Did you trip over something?" "If you combine the populations of Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Australia, you'll get a population roughly the size of the United States. We had 32,000 gun deaths last year. They had 112. Do you think it's because Americans are more homicidal by nature? Or do you think it's because those guys have gun control laws?"

"I'm not going to have a witch hunt, I'm not going to huff and puff, I'm not going to take anyone's head off... All I'm going to say is that you're 'my guys'...and I'm yours." And then, later, (not in the clip), to Sam: "And how can I serve you?" Richard Schiff was so good as Toby Ziegler.

Toby can supposedly recognize specific Marine Corps tattoos from the early 1950s (ridiculous) and knows e.g. the date his airliner came off the assembly line (even more ridiculous), but is a complete idiot about the stock market? For years I thought it was the writing that made the actors seem great; now I realize it’s the exact opposite.
@aresito22Ай бұрын
Huh? How are any of those things connected to knowing about the stock market?
@pinverarityАй бұрын
@ It’s about the general level of knowledge that the character is portrayed as having. Despite having absolutely no military background, we’re supposed to believe that he can recognize Marine Corps tattoos from the early 1950s. Despite having no background in science or aviation, we’re supposed to believe that he knows the specs of the airliners he flies on. Yet somehow this extraordinary super genius doesn’t know very simple things about the stock market? You see how absurd it is, yes?
