I've been watching Toby's songs and his interviews all day. My youngest son told me of his passing when I got up. I served 6 years with my local Army National Guard Field Artillery Unit, 1982-88. A big part of my family and friends are veterans- from various times and various military branches. I've always loved Toby's songs. But this one and all his other patriotic songs really get me. I'm 60 now, big and tough and rough around the edges. But I've been crying on and off all day. We love you Toby ! Go easy Brother....

"Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family," read a statement posted by his family on X. "He fought his fight with grace and courage." This song, always brings me to tears every time. My best friend served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He was lucky enough to watch you perform during one of his tours. I will never forget him telling me how he bawled like a baby hearing this song live. It was one of the highlights of his career. He was injured overseas and developed an infection he spent a month in a hospital overseas recovering and he had only been home 2 nights and on the third day he passed away the infection had spread unknowingly to the pericardium, which is the sack around your heart. No doubt all of the American soldiers were awaiting your arrival at the pearly gates to give you a much deserved heroes welcome. I hope you knew what you meant to the armed forces serving overseas. Rest In Peace! 💐✝️🙏

My father was only 19 when he was sent to Luzon in the Philippines during WWII. He returned thin, worn and changed. Back then, you couldn't have PTSD, if you didn't just "suck it up and keep going" you were considered a coward, or worse, so you just carried on. Haunted by what he had done and seen, he turned to drink. When I was born, he was a full-fledged alcoholic, abuser and chronically unemployed. He died of liver failure at only 34 years of age. I still carry the broken bones and scars he gave me, as well as the mental and emotional scars of a child. Flash forward twenty years, Vietnam and then Desert Storm. Against my family's wishes, I joined the military and It was my turn to face the limits of my humanity and courage. I too killed and cried and lay awake at night staring into the darkness. I could have easily become him, but I managed to hold onto myself through the love of others and the faith and loyalty of my comrades. I was one of the lucky ones. In the end, I made the military my career, returned to college to earn my PhD and proudly wear my Vietman/Desert Storm had everywhere I go. Do I hate my father for what he became? No. Not anymore. Many in WWII were killed, and many others broken beyond repair. It took me facing the same horror and conflict that he experienced for me to understand. While I may never be able to love you Dad, at least now, I understand you. Rest in peace, your namesake (your Grandson), would have made you proud.

I was an Air Force wife for over 20 years and I watched my husband leave and drive down our driveway thousands of times. He served in the Air Force for almost 34 years and this song was always one that I kept close to me and our 2 small sons. I kept vigil at home and kept the home fires burning. I still would do it all over again. My husband is a hero. May God bless all our military and their families! ❤🇺🇸 I know the sacrifice they make is very great. Thank you, God, for our veterans, living, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Everytime I see the Air Force jet flying in this video, the tears start to flow, and I just sob. It brings back so many memories of waiting for my airman to come home from an overseas mission. God bless our heros.

I don’t care where the fuck you come from, or where you are. You fight for your country no matter the cost of the fight. Anyone who serves/served, deserves the same amount of respect from the other side. You don’t fight because you hate what’s in front of you, you fight because you love what’s behind you. Those who don’t follow this rule are a disgrace. This does not apply to Nazi’s. Everyone hates the Nazi’s.

I look in the mirror today and an old man looks back. I will be 73 Saturday. I have survived 22 months in Nam ischemic heart disease, cancer diabetes and brain surgery some of the gifts from agent orange and combat. Still I remember and can see the young Marine that stood and fought for the USA I can still see the young faces of brave young men that walked the walk with me. They were my heroes. I can see the faces of the hippies in the airports with nothing but hate in their eyes vile names they called us, spit on us threw human shit on us and all we did was put our lives our futures in harms way for them. That old man can hold his head high he never waivered he never quit and he still loves the USA and would go again today.

Died from complications due to a myriad of things MS, sustained lung cancer, suspected colon cancer. Died right after paying off the car loan for me he really didn't want to go and he was on a ventilator for about 3 days he died during the night of my favorite programs last episode Gravity Falls finale. 7:15 PM my uncle his brother was also in viet nam and he was on hospice he was taken about a week or two on the exact same day as my dad. He had cancer of the lungs i will never forget the hug he gave me the last time i saw him a week before his death and he was on meds that had him thinking i had paid for a memorial dinner for my dad. His wife asked me not to hug too tight I let him squeeze me with all his might and i did not squeeze but after he thanked me and my mom we got a laugh out of it because we didn't even pay just goes to show ya people remember those that are decent to them near the end.

Female veteran here… for as long as there has been war, there have been women who served too. In honor of Memorial Day 2024 never forget the sacrifice made by those brave tough strong women who have given their lives for their country.
