I think with the British ISA, if it comes along, a better approach isn't to force the brokerages to identify relevant stocks, but instead to encourage the likes of Van Eck and Vanguard to create a British compliant fund. It can be weighted however, including options for everything ETF or be stocked picked investment trust. But then it's very easy for a brokerages, they just allow only to buy those holdings within an account you hold, in the same way I can't buy certain ADRs in my ISA but can do in the GIA, and that exists on T212. You'd presumably have a BISA section that would only return acceptable options when you searched, and would give clear ringfencing. Arguably, the solution would also help mitigate risk by in essence forcing funds if you want to take advantage of the British ISA. Or, T212 or whoever could still allow compliant single stocks, but they would need to create this categorization, which might be more complex and costly, but giving the market an element of differentiation and choice.

@TobyNewbatt5 ай бұрын
money market funds are not protected by the FSCS scheme, nor are any 'investments' it's not designed to protect you if your investments go down. But if a money market fund were to fail...we'd have much bigger problems to worry about in my opinion. All a money market fund is, is a collection of short term bonds - if you choose a quality one then something very bad would have to happen for it to fail. If you want zero risk you have to use something else like a Cash ISA or Premium Bonds

You mentioned at the end not to invest outside of an ISA due to capital gains tax. What if you want to invest more than 20k p/a to grow the pot faster, would you not recommend to invest into a GIA because of that and to invest elsewhere instead?
@TobyNewbatt6 ай бұрын
Good question - well if you are lucky enough to invest £20k per year into an ISA and still want to invest more you could consider: 1. Pensions/ SIPP - a great place to get taxable benefits and you can invest up to £60k per tax year (including workplace, up to 100% of your earnings) 2. Yes, any GIA is fine, but you should definitely try and work out what best to invest in and consider both dividends/ capital gains in the event that you make any sales :).

you have to put things into perspective - scary headlines like that do not take into account inflation, nor debt to GDP. The nominal amount of debt is not something to focus on in my view. Either way - owning assets is the best way to avoid inflation eating away your money. There will always be big scary numbers like that which sound bad e.g. US credit card debt at record levels...well duh obviously in nominal terms it will almost ALWAYS be highere every year. THe bigger quesiton is about savings rate and what % of income debt is on credit cards. Did you know that the media credit card debt in the US is actually zero :) Fun fact..it's because 55% of people don't have a credit card :).

Wonder how the move to two or more ISAs will impact fees. If someone has a vanguard account for the bulk of their funds and say a freetrade account on a much smaller amount, those freetrade ISA fixed monthly fees will seem % wise much more expensive. Trading 212 might seem quite attractive,all be it the prices and time to deal outside the main shares are not the best and a bit frustrating. Penny share dealing times in particular are woeful.

Coupled with the trust issues, its not a great start compared to the other offerings in the UK.
@TobyNewbatt6 ай бұрын
It's good to have some more competition but yes no ISA is a big miss for the beginning. Options trading isn't legal in the UK but CFD's are so I wonder if they go down that route instead. Payment for order flow is also illegal so will be interesting to see where they make money. Also on the FDIC insurance - this is a good thing as the limits are bigger than the UK FSCS. And yes foreigners like us get the whole protections too, see note below from the FDIC Gov site. "Any person or entity can have FDIC insurance coverage in an insured bank. A person does not have to be a U.S. citizen or resident to have his or her deposits insured by the FDIC. FDIC insurance is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government"

Seems every month the S&P is reaching all time highs. Whilst the FTSE just lags behind as usual. I was quite excited by the extra £5k in the British ISA when it was first mentioned, but actually, not paying tax on minimal returns vs. paying tax on much greater returns through a non-UK GIA doesn’t seem that good a deal…

Indeed when you put it like that it doesn't make sense. Honestly I can see the British ISA not even happening I don't think the new government bring this forward.

I'd love to invest in an ISA but I'm not allowed. 😥 For those of you that can use an ISA, please make the most of them. 👍

Hey Toby - would you look to do a video on Crypto investing in the UK ? Which exchanges to use, portfolio update of your own, etc ? Thanks for the vids !

Yes good suggestion maybe a future video - I enjoy the topic although most of the audience dislike it and it doesnt get the views!

Can't put crypto in an ISA.
@TobyNewbatt6 ай бұрын
@@george6977 No :) Unless we get Crypto UCITS ETFs. But you could invest in companies that own Crypto or the crypto minors as other commenters have noted.

Greta video toby, im jusy wondering im currently invested in VWRL on tradding 212 , but im liking the look of the global all cap ( on vanuard) would i be able to swtich and have all my investments on just the one platform (i.e Vanguard) - thankyou
@TobyNewbatt6 ай бұрын
You can transfer whatever you want anytime - however, here's another idea. whats the reason for the change? FYI there is another version of VWRL that automatically reinvests it's called VWRP, available on T212. Remember T212 charges no fees and VG charge 0.15% platform fees :) In the long run VWRL/VWRP are going to perform almost identically to the FTSE Global All Cap -

UK shares must be the worst over the last decade. Disaster if you were biased towards the UK. Avoid like the plague myself. YMMV.

UK stocks have a good PE ratio though. The new Brit ISA will boost it a bit.

I’m with Warren Buffet on this one; P/E is irrelevant. Hope you were not invested in UK stocks the last decade were their P/E was relatively low for the full period.

Great video. Is it worth adding more money to one’s sipp/ISA (on top of a normal monthly payment) if there is a big dip into the red?
@TobyNewbatt6 ай бұрын
Personally I think this could be a good strategy as long as you continue being a consistent investor. If you have the means, and you're a long term investor, then its a no brainer :)

@@TobyNewbatt Thanks for the quick reply. Useful to know!
@UndisturbedMonk6 ай бұрын
Yep, that's what I do. Stick to the normal monthly DCA amount and schedule, but if there's a large dip, then i'll add extra to capitalize on the dip. Technically it's not timing the market because you're still DCA'ing but just adding a bit extra when you feel it's a good price.
@Andygb786 ай бұрын
@@jacc88888 They do say that time in the market beats timing the market, especially with index funds. There's research that shows that putting in a lump sum beats monthly payments, as you've had more money in the market for a longer period of time. You often lose out holding money back that you could've invested earlier.

I don't think you can invest in an ETF within an ISA?

Of course you can :) Where did you ever hear that you can't? UCITS ETFs have been available for years and are fully ISA compliant
