Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 on pipe organ by Johann Sebastian Bach (composer and organist) 1685 to 1750. This particular piece of Bach's will always remind me of a spooky movie I saw many years ago starring the famous actor, Vincent Price.
Enjoy

My Mother used to play this on a huge pipe organ in a Catholic church in Portland, OR where I grew up. She was a gifted pianist and organist. Being right there you get the entire feel of this beautiful work of Bach. It gives me tears just hearing it!

Yeah same here, my guy plays in front of a fire place, in a Germanic castle that’s tucked away on a snowy isolated mountain top. The music resonates so deeply that you can even hear it, just barely, in the windswept alpine forest below.

The Fugue's theme is taken from an F maj episode in a Fantasia in D minor by J. Pachelbel (JSB older brother's teacher and God Father to his older sister). The episode is quoted also in F maj episode in the Fugue. Bach's habit of quoting a famous composer's theme includes Andre Raison G minor Passaglia as source for the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor No Autograph exists for either work of Bach however, no question as to C minor's work authenticity.

This is metal as hell. A lot of people criticize metal as being "just noise" and music of the devil. I'm not arguing that that isn't the case for some bands, but a good amount of them really parallel classical music. The similarity between darker, minor key pieces of classical music and metal is really close. If you disagree, type classical metal in the search box and watch "classical metal" by the band Perganum.

Is it only me or was the bass in this recording very weak? I have a recording on a CD with much more bass. But nothing compares to be in a room with a real pipe organ, like a church, and this piece being played. On a good organ you can both feel and hear the lowest bass notes as well as all the other notes. And I just love it :) I get goose bumps on my arms every time I hear this piece being played on a pipe organ. It is absolutly my favorite Bach piece.

Yes, Eric the, first half, the second half isn't much use without the first. Iv'e played both works. Bach also wrote a number of fugues on themes by other composers: Albinoni, Jan Adams Reinken, J.C. Erselius, which was my point Bach writing Fugues on Themes as homage was a practice commented on by family members, the allegation that its a either a fake or wrongly attributed from the only copy that originates Johannes Ringk as Peter Williams maintains is without merit.

@LetsBuyForks That depends much the region you are from; however, as I have learned it there are 2 accepted pronunciations (in English speaking societies). Where I am from I am most familiar with this one: Toc with a short o as in note, cata with a schwa as in harmony, and fugue as in feud with a g instead of a d. Hope this helps. TUA

I agree, this is my favourite toccata too, and indeed, the basses (pedal) sound weak, but it can be the recording or the organ that is not suited for this type of music. I still prefer it on the bach organ in my hometown Grimbergen (St Servaas Basiliek - Norbertin abbey)
@eameece
@eameece 12 жыл бұрын
Quite untrue. The themes of the g minor fugue S.542 and b minor fugue S.544 are almost identical to the theme of S.565, which the toccata is totally based on. There's no way it could be anyone but Bach. Unless you have a manuscript listing another composer, there is no basis for saying otherwise. There are accounts of Bach playing it too.

I wouldn't dare to call it an insult, music is coherent and a lot of nowaday-bands, metal bands inclusive, use the same scales and rhythm paterns as JS Bach or Buxtehude would have used, only in a distorted alternate way. Not all metal music is just 'screaming' in the mike, some metal can be quite 'classical' or 'baroque' in it's own way.

Cas Bami Bami If you are a classical music buff, then you must be aware I am not the only one who doesn't think this is Bach's work. It doesn't sound like his work at all, as any classical scholars can tell. When it is attributed to him, it is often said if it is Bach's work, it must be a young Bach, who was more adventurous, and trying something out of the ordinary for his time. Furthermore, do you know there's no record of this composition by him...himself I mean, in his handwriting or signed by him? And the earliest known copy is written almost clearly by someone who is not Bach, with Italian styling in the music notations and directions. It's contested by a number of people, and there is no definitive proof at all that it was written by him, so no one can say for sure that, "Yes it is from Bach." old.post-gazette.com/pg/05303/597490.stm

+Cory Kent Yes, it is from Bach. Now that THAT is settled.
@jediprice70
@jediprice70 9 жыл бұрын
Red Car LOL hardly at all settled. I'm not going to waste my time talking to close-minded people who think they know all there is to know. Doesn't even have the vibration of Bach. It'd be the literary equivalent of Stephen King writing a romance novel. Well worth questioning, and not shutting our minds to any outside information.
@jediprice70
@jediprice70 9 жыл бұрын
Red Car LOL, says the egomaniac who thinks he speaks for the whole world. It's a free country, and an open forum where everyone gets to share their thoughts and opinions. But you decide whose opinion matters and whose doesn't, for everyone right? Not to mention, you're the guy who added absolutely nothing to the discussion. Now this wasn't a waste of time, to point out your conceit, and how wrong you are. But not blocking you would be the bigger mistake if I didn't go and do that right now.

The evidence of Bach's life and the work itself shows pretty clearly that the Toccata S.565 is by J.S. Bach. Not only is Bach known to have played it to showcase new organs, but the theme of the Fugue itself is based on a short, isolated phrase from a Toccata in D Minor by the composer whom his uncle, his teacher, knew well, and on whose work Bach based others of his organ works on too: Johann Pachelbel. The famous Canon in D was composed for that uncle's wedding in fact. Bach then took a short phrase from his Toccata S.565, and used it himself as the fugue theme of another famous, great work of his, the Fantasy and Fugue in G Minor S. 542. A work whose Fantasia is also in the same style as the Bach Toccata in D Minor. So the style of this work is QUITE integral to Bach's work. In any case, no-one else could have written this magnificent, transcendent piece whose every note is itself integral to the whole work.

TheJakeman789 Digital organs are never going to sound as good as real ones as the sounds are sampled then processed which affects the quality. Its like comparing the worlds best camera to the naked eye. Its close but no cigar. Digital wise for organ sounds the Roland D-50 comes damn close.
