Truly amazing. Ton Koopman's keyboard mastery, together with his irreverent reading of the stylus phantasticus' mood, which only he can combine with utmost respect for Bach's music, makes this a stunning performance, absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for sharing it.

Indeed! It can truly be called a celestial pitch, and the modified meantone tuning works very well with it. Sometimes though, in the old days they used higher pitches just because it required less metal and thereby making construction of the organ less expensive.

@martin791017, Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. And for that reason I truly do appreciate it that there is disagreement among us when it comes to how we think of an individual artist. However some have poorer reasons for dislking him than others do. And no, Koopman would never insult Bach's artistic individuality by directly imitating him. in fact his playing only makes me wonder more and more what the real Bach actually sounded like, and that's why I enjoy him so much.

Remarkable recording, utterly remarkable... From the opening to the resolution of the toccata, it was a though this were a new piece to me. Magnificent instrument, artist and temperament; how jaded have we have become by "modern" tempering and 440.0 Hz. (I also agree - Who needs the D? I don't know much about other early Bach manuscripts; could it possibly have originated (or common practice just immortalized) in Dr. Schweitzer's editions?) Thank you.

super fantastic! ( Kirchenton : celestial pitch, yes ! Had to be higher than the Kammerton , 415, normally used in theaters and courts, secular... ;) passion , rage, love, all the great human feelings come out here , rethorically perfect ! ( may be with that acoustic, it is a bit risky to play the fugue so fast, you loose clarity in some passages, but on the other hand this fugue is not really a ' counterpoint treatise' ( Willams wrote it was even not written for organ ) so it works !!!

@svalanlucifer, because modern editions are incorrect and include a "d" to resolve the passage. However, the earliest manuscript of the work (by Johannes Rinck) does not include this additional d. Koopman views this oldest known manuscript as more authentic, so he does not play that note.

While I'm still here, I would like to add on to your comment regarding Bach's intentions, it is possible to approximate this with a comprehensive study of books like Kirnberger's "Kunst des reinen satzes" which contains a tempo system that is very authoritative on what Bach himself used. There is also "Die volkommene kapell meister" by Mattheson and "Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen" by C.P.E Bach (among many others) which offers a very interesting read on the subject.

A wonderful performance of a piece I love to hate! Pros: Tempos, articulation, style, energy, ornaments, almost everything! Cons: Lack of variety in Registration. The organ sounds fantastic, but even the fantastic gets old without some variety.
@nitromaen8 жыл бұрын
Hmm... Could you elaborate on what you mean with the con? You piqued my interest :)
@stearmankc8 жыл бұрын
I hear a full plenum registration from beginning to end (8 mins. +). I don't hear any manual changes and no registration change for the start of the fugue. I believe he does pull on the rest of everything at the end. It is a glorious sound indeed....but 8 minutes of the same glorious sound, in this piece, I find quite tiring, and it ceases to be so glorious. Would Bach have played it this way? Maybe....but I would not have liked him doing it any better. My ears crave some variety!

Firstly, this piece is attributed to Bach, but a number of its characteristics are quite unlikely for baroque organ pieces, and as such, its attribution to Bach has been contested by many scholars in recent decades. This makes your comment completely irrelevant and clearly shows how informed you really are about the piece.

@owenmccarthy06252 жыл бұрын
It’s just a different temperament (A = 495 Hz, as opposed to the conventional temperament, which is A = 440 Hz), so technically, it is being played in the correct key.
@lutzbanse91162 ай бұрын
Okay. Way much transparency in sounds in comparison to a silbermann organ.
@SelvesteDovregubben12 жыл бұрын
Unless you are some kind of modern-day Nostradamus, I find it quite unlikely that you've even got a clue. And even if that was the case, I would still be skeptical. Regarding the second comment I cited, much of the same arguments come to mind. I do not believe that the late Gustave Leonhardt, although being a remarkable organist, possessed any higher knowledge of the composer's intention with this piece than Ton Koopman does. How would he possibly have been able to acquire this knowledge?

Secondly, and I do not really wish to be furthering my rudeness towards you, but reading your comment was actually quite hilarious and frustrating at the same time. "Bach was 19 when he wrote this and he was having FUN", "You will then know what Bach intended"? I mean, come on! Regarding the first comment I cited, my question would be: How could you possibly know what the person responsible for writing this piece was feeling while writing it?
@brycecolson341011 жыл бұрын
Listen to the fugue, and the music itself will prove you wrong.
@GianlucaCagnaniJSBGLORY11 жыл бұрын
Leonhard has NEVER been ' the true master of the organ' . His organ technique was insufficient, his taste too ' correct' , his touching was good for harpsichord, not sure for these great north german or dutch incredible organs .
@SelvesteDovregubben12 жыл бұрын
In order to sum up: It is completely acceptable to have different views and preferences on things, and I think you've clearly demonstrated your viewpoint about this particular case. But to (poorly) disguise your argument as the intention of the composer, is revolting. It is an arrogant claim and one you should certainly not be so proud of having made. As has just been demonstrated, any poor argument can easily be destroyed and its proponents humiliated.

Your first comment wasn't about your personal dislike of his interpretation, but about your statement that he plays poorly. Which is why the following reply was about his personal history to try to prove your statement wrong. Nobody says you shoudn't dislike him, but that reply wasn't about that and neither was that the point. You just added something nobody asked for and tried to justify your position, quite poorly i might add.
