Today's Catholic Mass Gospel and Reflection for May 20, 2024 - John 19:25-34
The Church's Spiritual Mother
Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
Lectionary: 572
Alleluia
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
O joyful Virgin, who gave birth to the Lord; O blessed Mother of
the Church, who nurture in us the Spirit of your Son Jesus Christ!
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: John 19:25-34
And standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, and Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. Therefore, when Jesus had seen his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.” Next, he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own. After this, Jesus knew that all had been accomplished, so in order that the Scripture might be completed, he said, “I thirst.” And there was a container placed there, full of vinegar. Then, placing a sponge full of vinegar around hyssop, they brought it to his mouth. Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, said: “It is finished.” And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit.
Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away. Therefore, the soldiers approached, and, indeed, they broke the legs of the first one, and of the other who was crucified with him. But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water.

Reflection: How does acknowledging Mary as your spiritual mother deepen your understanding of her love and support in your life?
Prayer: My dearest Mother, you stood by your Son with unwavering fidelity and love. You cared for Him, nurtured Him and never left His side. I also am your dear child. I thank you for your loving fidelity toward me and open my heart to the grace of your Son that you bestow upon me throughout life. Help me to be more attentive to your motherly care and to daily grow in gratitude for your presence in my life. Mother Mary, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.

What a wonderful and beautiful message. Through your reflections, I have come to a greater understanding of Mother Mary's importance to our faith. Looking into the divine plan of God for the reconciliation of His children, many outside the Catholic faith lose sight of the bigger picture of what it truly took to perform this act. While it is easy to acknowledge the pure persona of Mary, it is her depth of the commitment that she had for God in her life prior to the conception of Jesus. That commitment was preparatory for the fulfillment of God's plan. It prepared her with the trust and strength to accept the charge that Gabriel presented to her from God. Her acceptance of the purpose that God had for her life, shows us a perfect example of the way our commitment should be. She never questioned God's purpose but obediently allowed it to come to fruition performing all the duties of a maternal mother to her child. This, and her faith in her Son and the purpose of His life are truly divine. One can only imagine how difficult it was for her to watch her Son suffer and be crucified, even with the knowledge of His life in the flesh. The divinity of her life is without question. The reverence to her life can never be questioned. She is truly a special part of a special relationship that God has with each of us. She was the beginning of our salvation, just as her Son fulfilled the prophecies for our salvation and the promise we have in eternal life.🙏💖🕊🕊🕊
