Didn’t know we were the happiest in the world haha but now that I think about it, my early childhood was amazing, I loved school and didn’t feel pressured at all! I always played outside with my friends and there were like 6 playgrounds in the area. I can’t even imagine being an unhappy child actually. Of course that changed when I was like 13, when we got actual homework and you know, school started becoming more stressful and puberty happened.. Also I cycle to school in about 30 minutes and always go with my friends and we just talk and cycle, which is really fun and just a nice way to socialize and stay in shape. We ALWAYS cycle, trust me. Even when I’m sick and it’s raining and freezing cold, I cycle. There are literal cycle traffic jams on the cycle paths (literally translated I guess, idk if that’s a thing) to school. And also, no one has helmets on, unless you’re just starting out with cycling.

Right, but the amount of pressure in the USA is different. In the USA, they'll make you learn 5 pages and not tell you what the test is about. Then..you fail the test and the rest of the class concludes; 'Yeah, you're not going to make it in life.' Your mother is crying at home, because she fears you'll have to become a drugdealer to make ends meet, you start using enhancement-drugs to perform better, you start having panic-attacks and everything (including friends, hobbies, relaxation) has to be erased from the schedule, because you need to have good grades. And then you HAVE the good grades, at the cost of the best years of your life (supposedly) and then you either happen to meet a grumpy principal that doesn't want to admit you to the university, or you have been "arrested by the schoolpolice" once, because you threw a paper-airplane (that really happens, look up John Oliver-School police. He's like the American Arjen Lubach) or you got a 9,5/10 where someone else got a 10/10 and you don't get accepted into the university. And if you do, then you have to pay a load of money and then they find out that your name is Leroy or Latisha and you can kiss your university goodbye. All the pressure and work is for nothing, studies have shown the effect of all that pressure is not only damaging later in life (you will not rest until you get praise from someone and hate yourself when you fail) but it also makes hardly a difference if you go to university and even THAT won't make you happy in the end.

The bad thing is also the pressure part tho. When we're young there isn't much but the transition from preschool etc. to high school is HUGE. For 8 years you barely have to do anything and then suddenly you're expected to go to school for 8 hours, make a huge pile of homework, get good grades, be happe, participate in sports and group activities and maintain a social life. It just all suddenly completely changes and there's really no one there willing to help ease the process.

I personally think (from a Pedagogic Worker's perspective) that the answer would be to cut down on homework in highschool, not to add homework in middleschool. If I think back about what I remember from those 80+ pages I've read, it's barely anything anyway, I learned through doing things and experiencing them myself. I used to have teachers that (unaware of what other teachers were doing) gave us 4 pages to read and 3 pages to write. If you have 5 different teachers that day, that all have the same idea, you have 20 pages to read and 12 pages to write. (And some jazzballet-practice in the evening, because your social life is nonexistent and you hoped you'd find some happiness in dancing.) You'd be running to jazzballet after a long day of school, dance for an hour, cycle home, be exhausted, eat and then have to finish 10 readingpages for the next day, and 5 need to be written down. And then the next day, you get another 15 pages and you still have the other 7 and you were late, so you need to stay in detention and oh...highschool is horrible, even in the Netherlands. Imagine how awful it must be in America.

It was so refreshing to see and prompted me to take a more relaxed approach to my own parenting.

As a Dutch guy with American friends it's difficult to translate these cultural differences. Everything is a factor. The car central road and city design makes it less safe for kids to be independent at a young age and go around playing in the streets. Stores and other shops or activities are not integrated into the neighborhood so kids can't go there as easily. The crime rate and safety is different in the US and Netherlands which again makes it easier for Dutch kids to play outside and ve independent. The car in the us at 16 which gives teens independence is a bike in the Netherlands. That's your independence, and kids get a bike way earlier then US kids get a car. Parents in NL have more time to spend with their children because the minimum wage is way higher than the US and we get a couple weeks of paid leave every year for holidays and vacation. Not only does that make adults happier and does it encourage them, but it also means the work life balance is better. Happier parents happier kids. The fact that's stores are always close by and a few minutes by bike. And that parents have more time off work means they can get groceries more often and don't have to buy bulk like is normal in the US and also the stores sell more fresh products than the US which again makes people healthier and happier. The fact that cafés, shops, restaurant, parks and are all integrated in residential areas also makes it more vibrant and alive and that in turn also makes people happier plus it ensures that again there's less cars because there's no major roads. The fact Dutch children don't even know about school shootings being a possibility but US children having to do drills for it gives them way more stress, the educational system is totally different in to NL compared to the US, the political system, equality and opportunities, employment rate, everything. It's almost impossible to give children in the US the same childhood or raise them the way they are brought up in the Netherlands because everything is connected.

Yes, your first year of junior high school you get homework! Playing outside with other children is typical Dutch. At least my generation did that. The sprinkles is not that important, but cycling in every weather condition is! And don't forget that I think 75% of the Dutch children joins a sportclub were they learn how to play together etc. I think that Dutch children also get a lot of toys! I think these reasons indeed make Dutch children the 'happiest' :)
@Widdekuu912 жыл бұрын
The thing with toys is that Dutch (basic) toys, stimulate the imagination. So they get cars, trains, lego or..whatever. And dressup-clothes that could be anything, like a white gown or a red skirt. They can use their imagination and create 5 different characters with tha. (Little red ridinghood if you wear the skirt as a cape, bride if you use the white gown, Grandma if you use both together, dentist if you use the white gown, Beachlady if you wear the skirt as a long top/dress.) In America (and sadly, more and more in the Netherlands) the toys that don't stimulate kids to think, are more popular. Such as...things that make a noise when you push a button. A singing-elsa-doll that already does everything by herself. A doggy that does backflips and just loudly barks. None of that invites the kids to engage with it..the thing already is what it is. It's a lot more fun to play with a non-electronic stuffed plushtoy-dog because then you get to make the scenario. Is he happy, sad, ill, sick, lost and found in the woods, is it a motherdog, a fatherdog, a babydog, is he/she curious or hungry...all of that can be decided by the kid. Not by the push of a button and a load of barking.

I remember an American friend told me their kids were picked up by a bus for school at 6am and drove around picking up other kids for almost TWO HOURS before they arrived at school not even two miles away. I mean DUH. When I asked why her son (in his teens already) didn't cycle or even walk to school she said it was too dangerous. No wonder they go nuts over there. They lose sleep, they're constantly driving around and running around to be on time and all because everything is too dangerous. Even small kids are taken to daycare very early in the morning. So they sleep too short, wake up out of their REM sleep, put in the car, taken to daycare and put back to sleep again. I'm talking 5am or 6am. I can't imagine something more bad for such small children. When I was still in school, my mom used to wake me up at 7.30, gave me breakfast on bed (yeah I know, that's not normal but very nice) and a cup of tea. I'd get up, wash and dress en got on my bike around 8.15am en arrived at school 15 minutes later. No stress.

when the people choose Socialism in a democracy, this is what happens. contrary to what conservative Americans want you to believe, Socialism doesn't only work, but it's actually the best system humans know because it produces the best results. this video only touches on one facet of Dutch life. the Dutch however, and northern European countries in general, who all happen to be Socialist countries BTW, all excel in every aspect and lead much better lives than Americans do. in fact, most of the top countries in any category are Socialist European countries. there's no denying that, and there's no ignoring that. the only times Socialism hasn't worked in the past is when the government is a Socialist dictatorship because a dictatorship is a dictatorship.

So not very on-topic but i'd like to share this; The school of my 6 year old daugther has a rule that they can plan all their chores for that week themselfs. they deside what they do every day as long as they finish it. it doesnt only teach to plan stuff and gives the kids a little freedom of education but it also teaches her to -sometimes- first do the stuff you like to do the least, before doing all the things you like the most at school.

primary school is pretty chill, and then high school starts. 6 years, 9 hours a day and then u are expected to do homework, sports and work on the side since your parents generally don't give you anything. both parents usually work 40 hours a week so most children get brought up in daycare. we have the least amount of free time compared to all other European countries and a really high suicide rate amongst college and high school students due to the huge amount of pressure and almost no sleep. but this is in south Holland, I have been to other provinces and people seem to have a lot more free time and don't work as hard.

Little Sailor I had no homework or challenges in elementary and had no trouble going to VWO and adjusting to the level there. It depends on your school, pretty much. At my school you got helped well and really taugh to study well. We also had the chance to do homework in class and ask questions whenever we needed to. There isn't much pressure on us and we still manage to get good grades and get taught what we need to be taught. It all depends on yourself and your school, and the amount of pressure that is put on you. You can work better when you feel relaxed than when you feel stressed and pressured. School's fine.

@Widdekuu912 жыл бұрын
