Taking shame away from this disease is so important. To humanize dementia and bring much needed dollars it had to be a superpower, I can only see Bruce Willis in that role. The Long Goodbye is the hardest loss. Losing who they are and then losing them physically is just heartbreaking. As hard as it is for those who have it, I think it’s hardest on the families and carers. My mother had dementia and to lose her this way and watch the loss of what gave her her dignity was deeply profound and will stay with me forever.

My aunt had dementia and it was so hard to see a different person than who she was. I took care of her for eight years. It certainly takes a toll on caregivers but I often think what it must have been like for her living in her own world. Toward the end of her life she would get aggressive and yell at me. Something she never ever did before. I miss her alot. 😢

By just looking at her, her body languange, her voice, her sad eyes as she responds to the questions asked you can actually feel her pain for the love of her life, for their daughters, and for herself. Clearly, this is not what she wanted, but she is taking care of him with love and excrutiated pain inside her, for him, their daughters and herself. Then they put them in a fancy nursing home and write a book about how hard it was for them . They have no idea until they have to clean up their mess.

I'm so sorry they're all facing this. I went through it with my mom. I kept a sense of humor and we sang all the time. She didn't forget songs until a couple if months before she passed. The last week was the worst because it physically changed her so severely that when I visited her in the nursing home, I thought they'd moved her to another room and someone else was there...but it was her. That's when I cracked. As I fixed her pillows to straightened her head (more for me than for her), I said. I love you mom. She opened her eyes for the first time in weeks and whispered I love you too. Those were her last words. A few days later she left us to go ve with my dad, the only man she ever loved for over 60 years. Bless anyone going through this.

I wish I could have told my mum that I truly loved her I wasnt allowed to be with her when she passed away my family stopped me. I wasnt even allowed to see her face for the last time the funeral director stopped me he claimed the family wanted a closed coffin.

I’m so glad there is awareness of different kinds of dementia. I lost my dad in 2019 to a specific type of dementia, very similar to Bruce’s. It was called Lewy body dementia. It’s was very heartbreaking for him and us to go through it. My mom was a very strong loving wife and caregiver for my dad. They had 4 children, my self included, and we were strong for him through it all. But it was very saddening. I feel for Bruce’s family ❤

I cared for my grandmother for her last 2 years, while Dementia took over. I can't describe how cruel this disease is and it changed all of us forever. It is absolutely a "family" diagnosis. In a case like this one, money only helps with respite care so the family can get a break. “Spare a thought for the poor” is exactly what Emma is doing, giving her support to the association they mentioned and having the second woman come speak about the disease. I hate when people bring up wealth as though it’s something magical that keeps people from suffering. No amount of money will help as long as there is no cure and the family STILL has to watch their loved one suffer the progression of this disease toward their death. Being poor doesn’t make the suffering “worse”, either.

This is an UGLY disease. My mom died from Alzheimer's and I was her care giver and I went from being her best friend to being a stranger. The family suffers more I think and after they are gone we still try to accept what just happened. We lose our person two times, one with the disease and than death. Yes, I agree. Caregivers are not always well supported. My mom has a dementia that is marching forward. She is 95 and is reasonably happy most of the time. I am grateful that she still knows who I am. But with that knowledge, my mom can experience severe anxiety at times that can be sad to watch. I am grateful that I have access to the best geriatric care for my mom and she has always been resilient and loving. I know this is a part of life, but it can be hard. However, I would not change anything. My mom has always been there for me and I am grateful that in her waning years I can be there for her.

My Mother is in middle-stage dementia, whereby she can call me repeatedly throughout the day from her Assisted Living facility to share with me the same story. I don't mind. It was devastating to watch her deteriorate from the vibrant, loving Mother and friend she was before this disease. I feel so bad for Bruce and his entire family. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia so it is dementia. It's devastating. My 90 year old mom has it and I am watching her get more and more frail and seeing her remember less and less. :( The great thing is that she's still the same gentle and kind person that she has always been.

This is a horrible disease. My father had it. Watching him slowly die was heart wrenching and changed everyone in our family. May Mr Willis be surrounded by his loved ones until the end. No words can describe what’s happening. May God help everyone involved through this.

Dementia is a very heartbreaking disease. My mother suffered from this and her decline was quick. Her not knowing who her beloved family was and not remembering all the memories we shared. This is why they call this the long good-bye. Prayers and strength to all who is going through it.

Thank you for your willingness to bring the awareness of FTD. My 59 year old sister passed in March from FTD after 3 years from diagnosis. The hardest part was getting a diagnosis. Her internist would not listen to us. She diagnosed her with anxiety and wouldn’t refer us when we asked for a CT scan or a referral to a neurologist. The other issue was no one had worked with FTD patients. Finally, the care for a patient with FTD is extremely expensive. I hope that more internal medicine doctors will learn more about the signs of FTD and take in what the family is telling them about the patient with the symptoms of FTD.

@@jennychurchill2716 Yes, FTD often occurs much earlier than Alzheimer's or other types of dementia. This is one of the problems with diagnosis; people aren't aware that FTD can be early onset. My mother-in-law had FTD. As the doctor in this interview says, it took about four years to get a diagnosis. She seemed way too young to be exhibiting the symptoms she was exhibiting.

I have been living with and caring for her every since; it is the hardest thing our family has gone through outside losing my brother when he was 18 to drowning and my father dying of stomach cancer in 2014. I love that he’s has support. My grandmother had this (my aunt now, her daughter) and everyday was/is a trial. My prayers go out to this family as well as Bruce. Just stay positive and never let the patient see your frustrations (because they will come) and always strive to make them smile and remember what they can.

My brother passed away last year from Dementia. It is utterly heartbreaking to watch a loved one deteriorate, and to make it worse, his wife emotionally divorced him because she could not handle his disease, therefore, not keeping him safe from the fall that killed him.
