I've literally walked past it about a bazillion times over a decade, and never thought anything of it, tbh. I didn't even realize that it was anything special until my boyfriend told me about the fact that no one knows who's stocking it, and that was only 2-3 years ago. It was just an old, beaten up soda machine to me until then, and I'm sure I'm not the only one in the neighborhood who didn't realize it was a land mark. An old, beaten up soda machine on a lawn that sometimes stocks hard to get sodas (but mostly stuff you can get down the street at QFC) is pretty par for the course in Capitol Hill. It's a weird, hipster neighborhood, so unless you know the story about the machine, it's probably really easy to see folks stocking it and not think anything of it.

I dunno, man. It's a bit creepy that the locals want to keep it an enigma. Not that I'm a proponent for the federal government having control over every aspect of our lives, but a certain amount of regulation is needed to prevent things like mass poisoning or biological outbreaks. Without lab analysis, who knows what's actually in those 'mystery' beverages? I'm sure they're harmless and the people who stock it are probably hobbyists recreating old soft drinks (or simply making their own), yet at the same time it is a bit worrying that no one from the FDA has poked their nose into the matter.

We did that in our High School (we got the coke and renting the machine from Coca Cola, but operated the machine ourselves). It was just one of three or four flavors, and there wasn't anything special about them, just regular Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, and Dr Pepper. On the other hand, the school somehow got tons of breakfast cereal made in US, but for export to Canada, so, aside from French names added to the English, we got to see some alternately-branded cereals like Sugar Crisp instead of Golden Crisp.

There was a machine like that at a place I worked in the employee lunch room, button just said, "TAKE A CHANCE". Not sure if it was the unpopular flavors but it was a random selection of something the machine offered on other buttons. No doubt the quarters were an indirect way of paying patrons back for the times they were stiffed by the machine. Actually, this could be a good business. Maybe operate a few machines in big cities. Then again, coming up with the rare sodas would probably end up costing more than any profit could ever cover. Of course, the owner could be an avid traveler who visits many different countries. Often certain soda is popular in one country, but not in another. So, they keep making it and shipping it, but only to specific places. I know there's a lemon lime soda I just loved that came out in the late 90s, then was gone. Come to find out, it was no longer sold in the US due to failing sales, but it was very popular in Mexico under a different name. Problem is, I don't live in Mexico.

Probably as vending machine technology updated, making this one look less appealing, and whoever owns it got stuck with a very large stockpile of discontinued sodas.

The locksmith has changed owners. I'm guessing the previous owner started with the machine as extra income and became a collector. Eventually, he would have a stock of random soda and he saw the mystery selection as a way to get rid of it. When it got really popular, he went full mystery soda in the machine. This clearly was a hobby for him. When the city put in the bus stop he decided to retire and that was the end of the machine.

The Foundation currently does not see any need to contain SCP-5000 nor is it possible due to SCP-5000's tendancy to initiate random inter-universal travel, and its usual location in another universe. If SCP-5000 comes back to our universe it is to be cleaned by one D-class Personnel. The money will then be extracted by any site researchers on hand and used to fund the foundation. Description: SCP-5000 is a vintage vending machine with an unlimited amount of cans. The Machine has the capability to blip back to our universe and travel through time both in our universe and the non-anomalous universe that is resides in 95% of the time. I've lived in Seattle since I got my discharge in 89. I first encountered "the machine" while working as a delivery driver. This was 89-91. It was the cheapest way to get a soda fix, as it only charged 50 cents at the time. 5 of the selections then were fairly mundane, mostly flavors of Fanta Soda. However, the lower right button was marked "Mystery" . This usually dispensed some off brand, discount soda, but then I began hearing tales of true rare drinks being dispensed, described in the video. The price stayed low through the decades, keeping the machine well-endeared to the residents of Capitol Hill (the neighborhood it's in). It has been featured in several news and magazine stories, and is part of the Seattle mythos, being one part mundane, one part weird, and one part urban legend. The last few years it has sadly had to be protected by a welded cage around it. The Seattle that birthed this quirky, classy, fun mystery has disappeared I'm sad to say; perhaps the final disappearance of the Mystery Machine was the last gasp of the Seattle I loved. I mean, yes, we know it's a human and not an extraterrestrial that used to stock the machine, and there appeared to be one male and one female involved in some way ... but that's literally all we know. Unfortunately, what I've heard is that the construction workers were not able to locate the owner (because of the mystery) so they had to move it to some undisclosed location ... meaning the owner doesn't know where it is either. Still, there's nothing stopping copycats... although finding older or random stock to fill it with might be nearly impossible now.

I remember this machine fondly! My friend and I left Alaska when we were 18 and Seattle is the closest city to fly to. We were desperate to escape AK, even if it meant living on the streets for a time till we could get on our feet. I needed a cell phone to find a job and such, this was 1999 so the best option at the time was those pre-paid cell phones ya could buy at a head shop. Of course when you were squatting in abandoned buildings, charging your cell phone was a problem, but that mystery soda machine came to the rescue! Where the machine was plugged in, there was a free exposed outlet below the one the machine was using. We would sit next to the machine and take turns charging our disposable phones and drinking soda, the machine was cheap at $0.55 a can, lower then anywhere else I knew! Occasionally we would see the couple or this other guy walk up and fill the machine up, we never thought anything of it as we were unaware of it’s notoriety if it was prevalent back then. Capital hill has gone through a lot of change in the last 20 years but it’s good to see that ol’ Mystery Machine is still hanging on, one of the last little pockets of Seattle charm that hasn’t been eaten up.

I bought a can from there once. Crystal pepsi was what i got. And i DID open and try it. It was fresh. Its been so long since i tried crystal pepsi, i couldnt tell you if it was the exact same, but it certainly hit me in the nostalgia feels. I think theres a very reasonable, logical answer to what this machine is. There are soda collectors and afficianados who try to recreate popular flavors of yesteryear. Give one of them a canning machine (likely bought at auction) and the mystery is solved. Its not about profit. This is done purely because they 'can'. Pardon the pun, but its clearly just someone with a passion for discontinued carbonated beverages, who wants to share the love in the most 'soda' way possible.
