Todd Edwards' Breakdowns

One of my favourite parts in Todd Edwards' tracks is that wonderful moment when the bass and drums just drop out, leaving you alone for a moment with that beautiful patchwork of sound, colour and memory, the samples that make Todds style so unique. Whether its just the sheer weightlessness of these sections in contrast to the rest of the track, like watching a car leave the ground in slow-motion as it races over a rise in the road, or a simple fascination with such beautiful chords and voices beating treated in such a contrasting, mechanical way, these bits are always real moments of beauty and soul, in my eyes at least.
Here, partly out of boredom, and partly out of sheer curiosity, I've collected together some of my favourite Todd breakdowns with some accompanying photographs, in the hope that youll understand me when I say Todds music is some of the most inspiring and beautiful around, as well as maybe giving you the chance to hear Todds music in a refreshing new light.

firstly, i love the concept and the tempo chosen for this! secondly, it's very difficult to get across (to people who doesn't know about todd's music), what it is that makes it so special. when i've attempted to, i leave with the impression that they think i'm a little crazy, but ultimately it's their loss!

i love this style of mosaic sampling. It doesn't take anything other than sheer talent to be able to smash something to pieces and bring out your own vision from inside of it.

Insane quality by Todd. So much emotional and forward thinking talent. I’ve always thought of him to be up there with MF Doom & J Dilla in terms of sampling/chopping but tbh he takes it to another level. The way he flips samples into notes and melodies blows my mind. His basslines just tie everything together so beautifully. Big ups Todd!

I remember first coming across this video when I was just a really young teenager (this also sparking my love for Todd Edwards' music). Up to this day I still find myself coming back to watching this video again & again, I just can't express how relaxed this makes me feel whenever I listen with headphones, especially when the images are matching the sort of feeling the song portrays, I just love it! My favourite breakdown still has to be I Hear Him!

Todd is by far the best sampler out there..has been for years...theres a interview somewhere on youtube with him talking about how MK was a big influence on him..but todd took sampling to a how new level...i call his music "pure sunshine" music 😀 thanks for the upload 👌👍🌞

Zonaverdi, I think you've encapsulated what is so beautiful about Todd's works. The multiple layers of sounds, the messages he puts across, and the rough around the edges sampling. He cuts and pastes in way that is hard to match. The best parts of Todd's music are when you lose the beat and all you hear is the wonderful sample solo (a lot like an orchestra). Those parts of his songs always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. Exactly what great music is suppose to do to you.

This is kind of a silly illustration, but this is what this vid is like to me: Its like when your eating cereal and pick out only the sweet fluffy marshmellows. I love that you picked mostly old skool tracks as well; totally takes me back to when I was like 13 or 14 and was just discovering electronic music. Just by CHANCE I downloaded the latest richie vibe show on 1xtra, and it was of an interview with todd as well as a mix. I instantly was in love with ukg from that second onward!

Nice one! I don't know, I just sort of chose pictures that came closest to what I imagined each breakdown would look like - images and colours that summed up the sound and emotion of Todd's samples. I guess not everyone's going to think all the pictures are suitables, as everyone has their own unique memories attached to each track. But hey, I'm glad you liked them nontheless! Peace.

awesome.... my favourite producer of all time favourite breakdown is from both the vocal and dub mixes of 'You Should Have Known', the dub version more so btw for Little Scare there is another version that has the breakdown without the 4/4 kick
