Nicely done and a reminder to print your work. For those annoyed by the Leica product promotion: you do realize that Camera West and Made in Wetzlar are exactly that, a promotional mechanism for Leica products. You'd have to be naive not to realize that and it doesn't change the quality of what Todd is saying in anyway. Take the messages from him and ignore the product placement if you wish!. Do you freak out every time you see an Omega watch in a Bond film?

Perfectionism is attractive but it generally hurts the work and the artist. Strive to reject 90% of your work, not look to accept 10% of it. Might help you progress and maybe even get better.

Great video! I've been following Todd for a while now and I'm happy to get to see what his creative process is. Just a note for the mini-doc itself...don't be afraid to let the a-roll breathe. By that I mean you can space out your a-roll for a lot longer than what you think. We won't click away if the subject isn't constantly talking, I promise! You're images are great, so let them shine in between Todd's a-roll and you'll have a bit more of a considered and well-paced cut. Just sharing a tip I've had to learn the hard way 😅 Keep on making stuff, I'll be following to see what else you can make!

Did I just watch an incredibly elaborate commercial for Leica instead of getting an insight into my favorite artist? Wow, what is going on with the world? How can his art and work be overshadowed by a big brand like this? Honestly, I’m disappointed. I own all of Todd's books and have followed his work closely ever since. But this... it seems to reflect the spirit of our times. Everything is infiltrated by advertising, and as a result, it loses its depth for me.

I agree that advertising is tiring, but couldn't it also be that these are his genuine thoughts? Isn't this also a very relevant part of the process? Would you criticise a painter who's talking about the paintbrush? It's a tiring paradoxical conversation within photography that we can't talk about our tools without having to say something philosophical about it. Every single photography KZbinr, blogger, whatever seems to simultaneously love their cameras and thinking about their tools all the while seemingly feeling guilty about it and constantly have to say "but yeah it doesn't really matter". It seriously seems like the empty and over discussed knee jerk reaction like "thoughts and prayers" is in the photography community.
@MagdaReyman
@MagdaReyman Ай бұрын
@@MKETSHOW117 it should be about his process. he could take those photos with any other camera. and yes, he can mention it but come one, this video was all about Leica
@MKETSHOW117
@MKETSHOW117 Ай бұрын
@@MagdaReyman I think Todd Hido is much more capable than you in assessing how much his cameras affect his process. If he knows it affects his images who are you to say otherwise? This endless competition about who cares the least about gear is cringe. Either you care about gear or you don't. Both are fine, having a superiority complex about one or the other is not. Even the most beginner of photographers have heard that good or bad gear shouldn't and can't stop you from taking breathtaking images. We already know this to be true, doesn't mean your process and enjoyment can't benefit from the right equipment. He comes across as genuine when talking about his equipment, whether he was sponsored to do this or not.
@MagdaReyman
@MagdaReyman Ай бұрын
@@MKETSHOW117 there is clearly marketing behind this video and if you choose not to see it we really don’t have to talk ;) And I think that gear matters, and it’s bs if someone says it doesn’t matter. But this video is a Leica commercial and let’s not pretend that it’s not true.

"You can make them softer, but you can't make them sharper".........since when?
@MonoWerx
@MonoWerx Ай бұрын
Film, you definitely can't. Digital, you can give the impression of sharpness to an extent, but you can't push that very far without breaking the structure of the image. So he's right.
@neilgenower9950
@neilgenower9950 Ай бұрын
@@MonoWerx In this case he's referring to digital. Sharpening a digital file was really used to negate the AA filter. Both the S3 and SL don't have a filter, so it's not necessary to sharpen the file. But to say you can make them softer but not sharper is simply not true. if you know how to be gentle with sharpening and do it in a considered way, it won't break the structure of the picture. I do though get what he's saying about softening the shot to match his film work, although seems odd to use a sharp lens only to soften it in post. He clearly knows what he's doing, so my input is really irrelevant.

In my understanding he meant to say leica is so sharp enough adding sharpness in post is not really work for him
