"Hello" plays over the radio at work and depresses me the hell out. I'm not really familiar with Drake's song, but at least it doesn't stop me in my tracks while I'm stocking shelves to punch me in the feels out of nowhere. I don't know if that's good or bad.

I always saw "Hotline Bling" as a sort of reflection on how, while he's growing up, so does the rest of the world, and it's sort of a reflection on how he's changed in the process.

For me, the biggest shortcoming of "Hello" is actually the lyrics. I think Adele's vocals are strong as ever, and while it starts out slow it builds up and delivers by the end. But I pay attention to lyrics, so it took a few listens to understand why everyone on social media was posting crying emojis and just couldn't even. Because I was initially distracted by banal and awkward lyrics that were sometimes too clever by half. "Hello from the other side"? Other side of what? It sounded like something I would have written when I was 12 cause it sounds like something a grownup would write. The only saving grace lyrically was a part Todd didn't like: "...to tell you I'm sorry, for breaking your heart. But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore." The sheer disappointment and sadness that he isn't clearly torn apart by it while she now is is kinda awesome. i think part of the reason I like it is because i don't think it is supposed to be the same guy as "Someone Like You" so I think he's not married, and instead she still wanted to get with him. The fact that he isn't still torn up by it isn't therefore meant as cattiness, but an admittedly self-centered disappoint that what they had is truly gone. Also, I've been the guy more than once, and subjectively for me it's kind of get a kinda nasty but human satisfaction about her breaking the guy's heart and him now being truly moved on when she changes her mind much too late. It's good for soothing wounds - so long as you don't let it linger. Not withstanding the last line of the chorus being oddly phrased, "Someone Like You" may not have been Shakespeare but I could feel the lyrics a whole lot more. Where "Hello" depends on the music and vocals, "Someone Like You" had a simple but still well-delivered story (and good music and vocals too).

I don't think Todd mentioned this, but the video for Hello supports the idea that "Adele and Drake dated and then broke up" because the significant other in the video is a black guy.

Except Hello is dreadfully boring and overdone in general much less overdone by her. Hotline Bling is entertaining even if it is badly done. I'm pretty sure Drake even danced horribly just to get some laughs. Hello is boring and slow and honestly makes me fall asleep

I'm not so sure that "Someone Like You" and "Hello" are about the same guy (within the context of the narrative). They have similar themes, but I'm not sure they are meant to be the same story. Maybe they are. They could be. But there is also room for differences. For starters, "Hello" makes no mention of him being married or otherwise unavailable. The fact that he doesn't respond is what makes him unavailable. I like to think that it is a different guy and she does actually want to get with the guy, but he has no interest. There's a huge difference between a guy not wanting to talk to his forlorn ex-girlfriend because he's married versus not wanting to because he just doesn't want to get back with her. In the case of the former, he'd have obligation to not entertain getting back together out of obligation, no matter what he felt. But ifbhe is available and still turns her down, that means he really just does not want to be with her. It's a true and genuine rejection. It's much more poignant and dramatic. While "Someone Like You" doesn't really have a sense of emotional closure, it is where closure starts. He's married now, she says a bunch of nostalgic stuff, and its delivery is incredibly full of emotion. That can be the start of getting over him and healing. It works as a song about her still being hung up on her married ex. But if she's still calling 1,000 times the same, still married ex, now years after "Someone Like You," it's just embarrassing. It works much better as her trying to get back together with the guy and him shooting her down with silence. Of course, I like better as song doesn't itself say what the truth is. If wishes were fishes, facts don't care about your feelings, etc. But I think there is something to be said about it being more likely that Adele wrote a better song than not, so there's that ;)

@AlisaM-L9 жыл бұрын
+Simple Guy я лично так поняла - Тодд более мягок по отношению к Дрейку потому что Дрейк (по мнению Тодда) в песнях осознает что он осел, за исключением той песни, что в обзоре)
