Thanks man, I really want to run Veins of the Earth and learning Lotfp rules at the moment and your review really helped to wrap my mind around some of the things in the core book

Glad to help! If any questions come up, ping me, I’ve been thinking lately about revisiting more OSR stuff so knowing what questions people have helps me plan topics.

I have been looking at Ruinations of the Dust Princess lately. It's a post-apoc hack of LotFP. It boils stuff down into smaller bits. One thing that stood out to me in both the main LotFP and RotDP, is the lack of Armor and Weapon proficiency. So, you can be a greatsword wielding armor clad Magic User. That's intriguing and could really work for grim sword and sorcery. I dig it, but my group is enraptured with the 5e Cantrips, and rest mechanic, etc. Dunno, maybe I can get them to try LotFP some day, but I doubt it. That aside, does anyone know of an SRD version out there that's easily hackable or printable? While I do like the art, some of the presentation pigeonholes the vibe a bit too much. The rules could really work well in a variety of settings but when I see firearms that part of my brain that thinks of other fantasy settings sort of turns off. The font choices also lend themselves to a certain feeling. I think, a vanilla, art-free presentation (without blank spaces where the art was) could help promote the system to a wider audience.

Hadn’t heard of that post-apocalyptic hack, I’ll have to check it out. Have you checked the official LotFP website. I think they had an art-free version but I could be mistaken. I’m not a big fan of laser gun wizards myself but there’s no denying the appeal of having spells to cast, particularly in combat, as opposed to having to get down and dirty with mundane weapons.

Gotta remember this was before Lars Anderson! No archery during melee. Lolz!

everytimei look up lamentations i find comments about the controversy or baggage or whatever but no one ever says what that is. what is so toublesome about this game?
@HexedPress4 жыл бұрын
The controversy is more centered around the people involved with it though the style the game goes for, not so much in the text of the core rules but in the art, is definitely not for everyone. I think some of the other books embrace that style more in the content itself and it’s pretty divisive wherever it does show up.

@@HexedPress weird sword and sorcery isnt new tho. the animated heavy metal movies? conan? lovecraft? i cant help but feel the reason i only see vagueries is bc the "controversy" is just safespace types only knowing the sanitized normie bookstore-safe version of dnd/fantasy. like anything darker than harry potter triggers them.

hale hortler you’d have to read through and judge for yourself but, I think it goes past at least Conan and Lovecraft (minus the racism) and Heavy Metal and some of the similar films are mostly forgotten by people so they don’t really impact the community much these days. Even besides stuff, you can google James Raggi and Zack Sabbath and get a gist of their problematic presence in the community.

@@HexedPress im not sure if youre aware but its possible to mention lovecraft without virtue signalling. i thank you for the reply but i think i'll be going.

Given the topic and context, I thought it was worth mentioning but you do you!
