@@jenanne31 The landmark case of New Jersey vs T.L.O in 1985 established that school officials only need “reasonable suspicion” that there is a crime before searching a student’s belongings. The Court ruled that school administrators do not need to have a search warrant or probable cause before conducting a search because students have a reduced expectation of privacy when in school. Couldn’t find the link but you can look up the case online if you wish.

And that, my friends, is why I am no longer a school bus driver. I thought I the "student manager" and the "Special needs" administrator had my back. They did not. When I had a violent student AND his violent Mother attack me, and it was on camera, they refused to replay the tape. They just didn't want to know about it. They pretended it didn't happen. So I filed a type of report on that Mother that went over both of their heads, and brought in Social Services, and gave my two weeks notice. That whole two weeks I said to my coworkers, "Gee, I hope I don't get shot today." Talk about stress.

From this report, it appears that all the staff members concerned had equal information & opportunities to take decisive action in a timely manner, but failed to do so. Ebony was covering for one of her own. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know “John Doe” was a problem child with anger issues and limited mental dexterity. The assistant principal (Ebony) was negligent and wanted to cover up her misdeeds. The teachers should have called the Police instead of going internally.

I retired from the public schools in my state three years ago, after 20 years as a social worker. I can tell you this story is absolutely standard. From the profoundly negligent parent, to the behaviorally out of control kid (including kindergarteners) running the school ragged...and including the wildly incompetent school administrators who give out candy to kids with the most aggressive behaviors. When I heard this case in the news, my first thought was "other states have this problem, too?". The school district should be responsible for administrators who are not doing their jobs, but everyone is so short of staff, they won't fire anyone. The only recourse at this point, unfortunately, is to hold adults legally responsible for such dangerous incompetence.

The guilt he felt at not “saving” the teacher, He should not have to carry that around! But, we all know he will . Sad, very sad 😭!

No blame or shame whatsoever on the teacher who almost got killed. My heart is shattered for her. But what the general public doesn’t understand is that these ridiculous administrators have us teachers so beat down, nervous and gaslighted that we don’t even feel comfortable doing the common sense thing at school (taking and checking the backpack; calling the police) for fear of censure, retaliation, or outright losing our jobs. I actually had an administrator once tell the staff that we were not allowed to call 911; we were supposed to call the front office instead. This announcement came right after a student violently attacked a teacher, and that teacher called 911 without letting anybody anybody know first.

Lesson one for the adults: in the first five years of a child’s life A LOT can be learned, including the worst of the adult behavior. Lesson two: the “Dr.” before Ebony’s name but her not getting the Principal position, speaks volumes of how “qualified” she was despite all the push for DEI. Lesson three: someone only mentions a gun in the context of a bad troublemaker - call the police. Being afraid of a deadly weapon being nearby is terror, you don’t have to see the gun to feel terrorized. CALL THE POLICE instead of defunding them. Unbelievably short sentences for all perpetrators. Endless empathy to the teachers in the classrooms that have turned into battlefields in the US. Dr.Grande, yet again, profound thank you 🙏

That the family milieu was the stuff of which nightmares are made is self evident. That the child is maladjusted is also self evident. What strikes me is not only the callous neglect and indifference of the Vice Principal, but the lack of initiative on the part of the other staff. It seems that they all are far more concerned with their continued employment and eventual pension than personal safety. There can be far too much deference to administrators in schools. If a teacher, a competent adult, knows that the administrator is failing, s/he should make the decision and do the right thing - in this case, forcibly search the child and call the police. Many years ago a friend of mine had a son with very severe asthma. When he started school his parents arranged with the headteacher (our British name for a school principal) and his teacher for his mother and an ambulance to be called if he had a bad attack. When exactly that happened a few months later, the teacher asked the headteacher to make the calls. She refused, despite the pleas of her secretary and the teacher, and - long story short - the boy nearly died. Of course, the headteacher was mostly to blame, but we were rather sickened at the time that the other two women didn't ignore her and make the calls themselves.

Little "Damien" should be charged to keep future generations aware of his personality, albeit the result of being the entity of parents that are scum, Ebony Parker should be in jail, no doubt about it, Best of luck to Abbeygale, I hope she is awarded and receive more than her claim. The shocking lack of decency, compassion, and competence, should place all who did not act under scrutiny. Looking at the recent case where parent got locked up for their child's school shooting spree, how is it possible these people walk away and are able to work with children again?

WHY OH WHY are they asking a 6 year old permission to search a back pack?! Just do it! Also my son's school kids aren't even allowed a fidget toy and it's pretty obvious when a kid has something they shouldn't.

I always enjoy your content Dr.Grande. Love your dry wit. This case was infuriating and you summed up my thoughts beautifully, in particular Doctor Ebony Parker as "lazy, jaded and arrogant." I think you stated Jon Doe will never be charged with a crime, is this because he is being treated for mental illness or he will never be charged with this particular crime? In my opinion his being charged with a crime, outside of this instance, is only a matter of time. A parental, adult recipe on how to make a 6 year old monster.

The assistant principal at the final school where I worked was the same way. I told her to come into the cafeteria and help the four adults monitoring hundreds of kids. I could feel it getting out of hand, almost like human electricity, so I made the decision to run to her office and try and get more adults as fast as I could. She blew me off and I went back to the cafeteria to find one student had pulled scissors on another and they were having a screaming match and threatening each other. That assistant principal was promoted and became principal of another school. I don't teach anymore.

This is the very definition of gross negligence. There is also no doubt in my mind whatsoever that racism played a huge part in this. Both on the part of the administrator, and the assailant.

He obtained the gun from his mother’s purse, the same purse he would get marijuana from!???! I cannot believe we are talking about a 6 year old. This boy should not be let in society until he goes through years long, intensive therapy. He is a danger to society! Imagine what he could do at 18!!! The assistant principal should never be allowed to work at schools. Her lack of care, professionalism and responsibility is disturbing!

Yet another circumstance where gun violence is a direct consequence of government officials knowing about a dangerous individual with direct evidence of illegal access to firearms, and doing absolutely nothing to stop it or remedy its aftermath. And even aiding and abetting the violent offender. I wonder what animus and bigotry Ebony held toward the teacher that she used to justify her neglecting a dangerous situation. Permissiveness and complacency in the name of envy and equity toward others is truly evil.

The fact that disciplinary action for bad behavior is administered by something called the "Student Success Team (SST)" speaks volumes about the problems in public education. In an overcorrection to the cruel methods of the 19th century and early 20th century and with the rise of subjectivism, educators and parents are averse to describing any behavior as bad, shameful, or inappropriate. They believe children should always be affirmed and supported to be themselves and do whatever makes them happy. This unconditional acceptance and inclusive treatment appear loving and kind, but true love seeks the good of another and thus discourages the person loved from doing wrong because it brings harm to himself and to others.

I usually never comment on the videos about serious subjects. I'm far from a psychologist or an expert on human behaviour. But in my opinion, cases like this show us exactly what happens cowards take up any positions of authority whatsoever. We've all encounted situations like this on much smaller levels before. When confronted with a difficult situation, a person either addresses the issue or finds convenient ways to ignore the problem out of fear. Cowards choose to ignore the most egregious and outrageous behaviour and incidents because they're completely petrified by the idea of facing tension and unpleasantness. With all the warning signs and concerns raised by staff/faculty, it was very clear there were deep systemic problems. But addressing these problems likely would have meant dealing with tons of pushback and a load of unpleasant questions. So time and time again, the problem was dismissed, shuffled around, and turned into "tomorrow's problem." Cowards will have no problems choosing to censure, fight, and silence people they think just won't give them any trouble. But the thought of having to face any sort of tension or unpleasant situations is out of the question for them. It's an incredibly self-centered and unreasonable mentality. But I'll wager that the entire time this was happening, this woman was doing everything she could to play the victim, be self-righteous, and dismiss the perfectly valid and immediate concerns of people actually dealing with this problem day-to-day.

Ebony Parker shouldn't be in charge of anything, certainly not an elementary school. She had multiple chances to prevent this and failed to do anything. This is gross negligence on her part not to protect students and teachers. I hope the teacher that was shot sues her and the school board in civil court and gets everything that she asks for.

Both my parents were teachers for 30 years, and so were all of their friends. This means I was surrounded by teachers my entire life. (I have a teaching degree myself but I'm not in the trenches.) You know what I've learned about teaching, as a profession? Teachers are kinda like cops; the bad ones can be (fatally) dangerous, while the good ones are few and far between. How would my parents and their friends react to this story? Some of you are thinking, "Well, obviously they'd be disgusted. Obviously they'd say 'the child never should have been in the classroom in the first place, etc.'" I don't think so -- I mean, they would say that, yeah. But these people who taught in Eastern Canada and are now in their 70s and 80s, if I told them about this, they wouldn't even understand it. A 6-year old shot their teacher and the VP hid in her office? They wouldn't even comprehend that, truly.

I had a classmate in elementary school that was very violent to the point where even as a kid I was scared of his outbursts. It was hard to befriend him and back then I wished he’d be sent to a different school. Now looking back I realise that his parents likely were alcoholic (they lived in the neighbourhood) which I didn’t realise at the time. Poor kids probably didn’t get the attention he needed at home. I do wonder where he is now but most of all if he received help. His behaviour did not get better over the years so I fear he was lost in the system…. The violet kids really need help and compassion, they’re a product of their environment,
