Speaking from experience as somebody who was falsely accused of a crime and didn't commit. There's really nothing you can say to make people believe you they've already made up their mind even after the prosecutor refused to take it to court because they knew I didn't do it, there were people who still refuse to believe I didn't do it. Part of me almost thinks it was worse but it didn't go to trial because the rumor is I paid somebody off and that's why they dropped the charges. That was over 20 years ago and I still have childhood friends who don't talk to me anymore but it is what it is.

As Dr. Grande pointed out, there have been people to show "compassion" by crying and volunteering to assist with the search and then it turns out they are actually the person who committed the crime. Also, the fact her mother didn't want her to go because she felt something bad was going to happen to her daughter, just adds a different feel to this case.

I was a very straight laced teenager who never rebelled much, but my own daughter has shown me what rebellious and impulsive really looks like unfortunately! I feel for her Mom SO much- it's so hard to FORCE a teenage girl to do or not do anything, and then it's very hard to tell when they are lying, and ALL you want in the world is to protect them, and you just wish they would understand this and trust your Judgement! The Boys falsely accused are also a sad factor to this case, I'm sure this happens often and it can really ruin lives. While their reaction to what happened was unfavorable, they were caught between a rock and a hard spot as to how to conduct themselves after returning. They were all young and entirely too preoccupied with themselves at the moment this all happened. An in-law of mine dated Peter and I remember seeing him years later after this happened and my heart feeling for him as I couldn’t imagine all the slander he endured over those years. Every year on Brittanees disappearance anniversary, all the rumors would amp up again but thankfully calmed down within the past few years. What happened to Brittanee was horrific. It always made my heart rip as I thought about her just wanting to get away and enjoy her youth, like we all wanted. I am only a few years older than Brittanee and I think about all the precarious situations I was in at her age. As one of Pete's closest friends and who I consider to be my best friend, I appreciate you pointing out that he was between a rock and a hard place with how it happened. It was a regular occurrence that he would send me screenshots of death threats he got daily immediately after it was released he was the last person to have seen her. I think the fact that when he went on Dr. Phil he was having an anxiety attack, the threats he was receiving, and the fact his lawyer just wanted fame. Was really what made him seem cold, even if a couple comments in hindsight seemed so, it isn't easy being threatened for something you didn't do. He was just fed up with it, and seeing the accusations and threats first hand I didn't blame him for being frustrated.

From what I remember, those friends she went there with weren’t good friends at all. I know they were young but my friends and I never had so little regard or care for anyone, friends or not. I have to disagree when Dr.Grande said Peter being so arrogant & uncaring had to do with his young age at the time. Idk about anyone else, but I’ve always been considerate of others, I never shrugged & said , who cares, not my problem when it came to someone in our group walking by themselves at night, whether I knew them or not. We always made sure the person was included for her safety. I always thought some people are just more selfish than others , they were that way when young & are the same selfish person into their old age. 🤷♀️ Example numero uno, my brother.

@@kimwarner1681 All humans are inherently selfish and wicked. You're not an exception aside from same sex interests. In reality, you're probably thinking "i hope your family dies and you get run over by a train". The concept of "friends" is silly because it implies they can be trusted or have any interest in you or your well being. In reality, they just want to manipulate you and want you to goosestep to their ideals. Everyone will take advantage of you, if you let them. The idea of having "friends" is self sabotage. Another great analysis. I am interested to hear your specific claim of federal charges for same crime/acts being viewed as unjust, Double Jeopardy. I tend to agree. Your experience and training lend a great deal of import to this view. Have you considered sharing this view with justice organizations? Innocence Project or others? More clarity and compassion in our justice system is sorely needed. More critical reason and measures, and more compressive grasp of the measurable systemic errors and abused help all of society understand our roles and responsibilities better.
@shayb4132 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more with this comment!! The system seems to be so very broken, and is terribly unbalanced. The double charging at the local and Federal level is just one small facet, I always think it's ludicrous that it often depends so much on what lawyer you can get it afford, and sometimes what connections you have, leaving wealthy people at a HUGE advantage and often with MUCH lower sentences for identical crimes to those of lower income, and then of course the racial inequality, the way too long prison sentences for non-violent crimes like for drugs where we should be treating people instead of just throwing them in cages with violent offenders for years, ALL of it needs some serious adjusting and needs to be done with much more humanity and compassion. We NEED a criminal justice system, of course, and some people must be locked up- but we need a much BETTER, more balanced, more compassionate criminal justice system for those at a disadvantage. Thanks for this fantastic, important comment! ✌️💖

Thank you! Polygraph gets brought up so much sometimes, as some sort of either incriminating or clearing factor but it like...rates one's heart rate and sure SOME people get nervous lying and their heartrate will spike but other people won't. And heartrate can spike up or go down for many completely unrelated/innocent reasons. Like if you run or hurry somewhere your heart will beat faster and louder bc of the exercise. Or someone may be nervous for other reasons or have anxiety or an undetected heart condition of some sort. Or be neurodivergen, so their reactions would be different from neurotypical people. Or, obv being questioned by police is anxiety inducing and stressful in and of itself. I also wonder how would such test or intoregation overall be conducted with people who are neurodivergent, for example on autism specturm? Autistic people tend to be prone to stress as well as tend to have problems with social cues and situations. And again, what about polygraph results when someone has a heart condition and has a peacemaker? Wouldn't that muddle readings? But all of this is why those things are inadmissable in court.

How horrible for the parents and how frustrating for the guy falsely accused who had extra time added to his sentence for an unrelated crime. But I'm glad that at least now they all have answers. I have heard this excuse many times about young people not showing empathy and not making safe choices because they are young. To a certain degree, I understand about the bad choices. But I can't agree about the empathy. If her "friend", who was 20 at the time, couldn't show any empathy for her going missing or regret for not giving her a ride, then he's not a person I would want to know then or now. Maybe because my college friends and I were all from big cities, but boy or girl, we never let someone walk back to their dorm/apt alone. Never. If there were only two of us, one would spend the night at the other's place and go home in the morning. I'm always shocked when I hear these cases of young people letting their friend wander off alone-- often late at night, when they are drunk, and in an unfamiliar place.

She didn't know them well. She'd told her boyfriend they were being mean to her on this trip, they didn’t seem to care that she went missing & they refused to talk to her mother. So, they are innocent in her murder. I was wrong. It's important to follow evidence & be willing to change theory as information emerges. But I still think they were simply bad people.
